JarInspector r1.0RC4 (Mac OS X)
This is an excellent little tool that does exactly what it is intended to do very well and is a very useful addition to a Java developer's set of tools. Thanks to the developer (Christoph Gerdes) for doing a great job. In addition to the jar file viewer and decompiling of class files, I particularly like the interation with TextWrangler and other editors). Of course no tool is ever perfect, and my suggestions for this one are that it would be nice to be able to browse the source code in a split-pane, below the list of classes, (like a mail browser) rather than having to open a new window for each decompiled source view. Also it would be nice if PNG, GIF and JPEG images could be previewed too, and maybe an option to render HTML, and not just show the source, would be nice. [alert admin]

Yahoo! Messenger 3.0b1 (Mac OS X)
Seems mostly to be a facelift. Still not feature-parity with Windows version (e.g. audio support without a webcam). Seems stable and certainly looks nicer than the old one, although I personally prefer to use Adium. [alert admin]

This version refuses to start on my G5 PowerMac. This appears to be a common problem. I do not recommend "upgrading" until it is resolved! [alert admin]

SlimServer 6.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Been using a SlimServer with SoftSqueeze for a few weeks now and have now taken delivery of a couple of SqueezeBox 3s and have to say that this setup works very well indeed. Highly recommended! Much more convenient that using an Airport Express for audio. [alert admin]

Camino 1.0a1 (Mac OS X)
I love this browser. Not only is it a great-looking Cocoa application, but it also lets me access my bank account, something Safari still isn't capable of. However, I used to use Mozilla for my bank account, and Safari for everything else, but for the last six months or so I've mostly been using Camino. Why? Well, it a nice clean Cocoa application, its lightweight and fast (especially if you download a build optimised for your CPU), but the best thing about it, in my opinion, is the bookmarks menu and bookmark management. Its just so much nicer to use than Safari's, even though they are very similar. In particular, the ability to add separators to bookmarks menus is a huge plus for me. Downsides? None for me. It doesn't support RSS, but then I far prefer NetNewsWire for RSS over Safari, so that's not a problem for me (I'm no fan of Safari's RSS support -- I find it way too limiting). Also Java support is weaker than with Safari, but that is remedied by installing the Java Embedding Plugin. highly recommended. [alert admin]

AbiWord 2.2.8 (Mac OS X)
This latest version is finally a viable alternative to Word on the Mac. Haven't had any problems with stability or any significant compatability issues. It's been a pleasant surprise to see how well this Mac version works. I last tried AbiWord under KDE on Linux about five years ago. The look of the toolbars could be a little more Mac-like but it's acceptable and better than the other opensource word processors that run on the Mac. A must-try for students and home users who do not want or need MS Office. [alert admin]

Ethernal 1.1 (Mac OS X)
Seems to do the job well, but as already noted here, the Stop button doesn't work. Also, it would be useful to have an option to see the source and destination addresses in other formats. MAC addresses aren't particularly user friendly. Would it be possible to see IP addresses and ports as an option? Other than that, a nice clean tool. I particularly like the search feature. Apple Java 3D Advanced Imaging 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Essesential software but desperately needs to be updated
This is an important piece of software for many of us, essential for using various pieces of specialised software, however it also needs to be supported. A handful of bugs including one really serious one (ie can bring down your entire graphics system -- don't try resizing a 3D view made using a ConfigureUniverse for example...) have not been fixed in the 18 months since it was released (and yes, I have reported them to Apple). Java 3D itself has been open source for a while, but that doesn't include the Mac port so we're still dependent on Apple supporting this software. Still. they've surprised me before (by porting Java 3D at all) after I'd given up hoping... Having said that, this is essential software for using Java 3D applications on the Mac. Just don't resize a window containing a 3D view before saving any important work you have done, in case the programmer happended to use a ConfiguredUniverse class to implement his/her J3D application! The reason sniping is not supported is most likely because eBay's licensing terms for their latest API prohibits use of the API to implement sniping.

Do you mean after reconfiguring your base station with the updated software? This software just updates the utility applications for configuring base stations and accessing features on the new Airport Extreme base station so unless you have updated your Airport Base station then this update shouldn't have made any difference to your networking.

Ummm... I think you've misunderstood. This is software for working with Airport _Base Stations_. How can you give it a low score for not fixing issues with your router if its not an Airport base station?!!! If you don't have an Airport Base Station then this is software is of no use to you but it's still a nice update for those of use that do.

GLX is the OpenGL support for X11. For stereo(scopic) rendering you need on a Mac, you currently need a Quadro FX graphics card and stereoscpic display hardware. This is mostly of interest to scientific users with X11-based visualisation applications.

Should perhaps add that according to the release notes, this fixed bugs and adds support for new hardware (Mac Pro presumably).

You can use it to see the contents of traffic to/from your computer to see what information is being sent by your computer out onto the net. For example, if you are wondering what information a program's registration software is really sending over the network about your computer.

I'll add a comment to my own post here. The logout is caused by X11 crashing if it is not properly installed. This siftware failed when I first tried to run it on my PowerBook (which had been updated from my G5 when the OS was installed, and /usr/X11R6 did not make it over from the G5 to the PowerBook) but runs fine on the G5.

I'm sure Reason's great (I've heard good things about it) but it cost ten times as much so its competing with Logic Express and not Garage Band, for most of us.
