Trouble downloading with Speed Download
Actually, Speed Download is the issue. They have confirmed to us that there is a bug in their product and hopefully will have a fix soon. In the meantime, they have suggested the following workaround... >Confirmed workaround: > >You do not need to un-install Speed Download. > >Simply, go into the 'Plugins' section of the Speed Download preferences >and manually delete all the 'File types to be handled by Speed Download >2 and 'Save'. Restart your browser. > >When you're done downloading, simply re-enable Speed Download by going back >to the 'Plugins' preference and click on 'Restore Speed Download File >helpers' and then 'Save'. Restart your browser. > >This workaround is confirmed to work. The main difference between the >above method and uninstalling, is that the above method deactivates >Speed Download completely allowing the download to complete >successfully via your browser, but does not require you to reinstall, >re-register, and re-configure Speed Download afterwards. > >Hence, once you're done downloading, you can very quickly >continue enjoying Speed Download elsewhere. > >Again, a fix is on the way. In the meantime, we will be updating our >website to relay this info. [alert admin]

Sorry for the confusion on the price. Yes, the MSRP for MacJournal 3.0 will be $29.95. However, current users may upgrade to MacJournal 3.0 for $14.95. This option will become available in early January. [alert admin]

Mariner Write 3.7 (Mac OS X)
Hello Matterman- I would like to address the issues you wrote about in your previous post. While I realize this forum allows for free speech and for users to give their perspective on products, it also allows developers to delve deeper into the said issues. I'll address them one at a time. 1.) I have been using Mariner Write since OS 8.6, and it only gets worse each year. Why ? It has one major flaw, and a couple of smaller ones. I think our tens of thousands of customers might debate you on that. Since OS 8.6 we have probably had 10-15 updates - are you saying, even with those updates, the product is getting worse? 2.) Text does not render correctly on screen as you type. What good is a word processor that does not let you see your words ? How doesn't it render correctly? Do you have font smoothing on? If you can email us with more information we can look into just exactly what might be going on. 3.) The minor flaws; stylesheets and flakey formating. How??? 4.) Then there is Mariner the company who when they do respond to email, always respond in a defensive manor. We track every email and phone via our Support department. If you can email me directly I will certainly research this issue and correct it immediately if there is a legitimate issue. 5.) Their web site has gone from bad to pathetic, In what way? 6.) And the hoops they require to download updates are silly. Again, in what way? You click on a link and download the product - why is that so silly? 7.) There are a few good things about Write: it loads fast, is easy and intuitive to use, has a small footprint and does not have functions that you will never use, but for what you get it is vastly overpriced. I have reverted to TextEdit for 95% of my writing needs. Its free, fast, bug-less, renders text beautifully and does not have palettes up the wazoo (Mellel) or a nasty metal interface. Thank you. Matterman, we would love to correct the issues you are reporting but we need more information. Please email Logan Ryan lryan@marinersoftware.com and we will address this ASAP. Thanks, Logan [alert admin]

Mariner Write 3.6.0 (Mac OS X)
In response to "Is this a beta version? At least, I think it should be." First, I must say that you are entitled to your opinion. Below, I want to give my opinion. > Yes, Mariner Write 3.6 has potential but so do most new-born babies. That is overly harsh. Mariner Write is head and shoulders above a text editor and much better than most word processors out on the market. This app allows folks to actually get their work done without getting in the way. > This product has so many bugs and inadequacies that it still ought to > be at beta stage. We have made several public betas available and also have a mailing list and a place to send suggestions. > Below is a list of all problems I encountered within only two hours of > using the application. This makes me wonder if the guys at Mariner do > any real field testing at all before they release the product, or > maybe we consumers are the actual beta testers. Are these problems bugs or your feature requests? Which is it? Real field testing -by users, or lab testing - (at Mariner), that you'd like to see. We have a lab at Mariner and about 300 beta testers. No developer is ever going to get their product bug free but we feel 3.6 is extremely solid, and so do our thousands of customers! > 1) Printing results in low resolution figures only (close to 72 dpi). > The same for PDF, EPS, TIFF, JPEG. This reminds me a lot of problems > from the early days of AppleWorks (thank god Apple fixed that). > 2) Saving as PDF produces only low res. figures. Bug 1. Your number one and two are the same bug. Mariner has acknowledged this bug. This bug was introduced shortly before release and will be fixed for version 3.6.1 > 3) Line numbering behaves erratically (especially if pictures are > present). Bug 2. Ok, we can't reproduce this problem nor have we heard anyone else report this issue. Maybe you should send us a file that displays the problem. > 4) Endnote numbering behaves erratically. Numbering sometimes goes > berserk, and reoccurring references are sometimes converted into pure > text. You cannot trust any reference to be true after a while of > writing and editing. Bug 3. Our customers use endnotes all the time and haven't had any problems. > 5) Moving the cursor with the arrow keys is too slow. Not sure this is a bug. You must have a slow processor, seems fine for me (12" G4 powerbook 867mHz). Our Tech Support has no reported issues with your "bug." > 6) On the screen most text is rendered with really bad kerning. This > problem occurs whether you choose smoothening or fractional character > widths (I agree with "Stone Age port" and it also reminds me of old > AppleWorks bugs). This isn't really a bug but more of a feature request. The kerning and text rendering aren't as good as in apps that use Quartz but it is good enough for most individuals from what we have been told. > 7) Drop that "Print Preview" function all together or make it link to > the "Preview" application in stead. The way it's working today is > entirely useless and only spreads confusion whether this is really > what the printout will look like or some semi-print version according > to Mariner interpretation. Again, this is a feature request You don't have to use the Print Preview if you don't want to. You can hit Print and see the it in preview as you suggest. Frankly, I prefer staying in the app itself. > 8) In-text images can sometimes be hard to resize. If they are > inserted with a size that spans outside the page borders then their > size handles are out of reach. I guess they can be a little tough to resize. If you double click on them you can resize with a dialog or use the resize handles. It would be nice if pictures would automatically resize to fit the page though. Again, this isn't really a bug. > 9) There seems to be no alignment tool for floating images. Sounds like another feature request. Alignment guides would be nice. A full blown graphics layer like in a desktop publishing app would be nice too. > 10) No images can be made magnetic to any page borders (i.e. stick to > page tops or bottoms as the text flows). This is one of those things > that really distinguish a good quality book or article from some cheap > word processing output. These are not bugs but another feature requests. These are technical document, page layout type of features. I'm sure inDesign or Framemaker has this type feature. What other apps have this? > 11) Switching to the Mariner application when it is already open > takes a few annoying seconds before any page content is redrawn. Bug 4? We pride ourselves on how fast this app is (matter of fact Barefeats.com - http://www.barefeats.com/wp.html) just announced Mariner Write is the fastest Mac word processor on the planet.) Not sure what's going on with _your_ computer??? > 12) Opening a Mariner document takes to long. There should be no > progress bar when opening a file containing nothing but four pages of > pure text. Today this takes approx. 3 secs on my dual-G4 PowerMac! Is 3 seconds really a big deal? i guess I don't open enough files for it to be a big time suck. Mariner is much faster than Word at opening files. See the speed test link - http://www.barefeats.com/wp.html Here's a quote... "I timed how long each took to import an MS Word file. Mariner Write took 5 seconds. AppleWorks took 144 seconds! So based on that excercise, I declare Mariner Write the "world's fastest Mac wordprocessing application." > 13) In the Mariner manual they mention that the "Condensed View" does > not show any endnotes, but why? It cannot possibly understand why you > should hide some text elements from the author in any view. They bear > as much information as any other text does. Another feature request. Send it to Mariner rather than post to VT. > > Maybe it turns out there are solutions or work-arounds to some of > these bugs, but it still doesn't help. You shouldn't have to spend > unnecessary time on basic stuff like this. I would like to advice > Mariner Inc to contact some real word-processing users and have them > evaluate the next Mac version before releasing it. More Info You only pointed out a few bugs and extolled several feature requests. Hmm, why don't you join the beta team? We loved to have you on board. Mariner Write 3.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I would rather not get into an electronic debate and acknowledge that this is truly not the proper forum, as Director of Marketing for Mariner Software I "challenge" the following posts to present me with proof of ANY sort of non-responsiveness. We have record of all electronic and telephone correspondence for the last several years and pride ourselves on timely customer service. Please identify yourself offline by emailing me @ lryan@marinersoftware.com and we will research any sort of issues there are. If we are at fault, we will make a full apology. [alert admin]

sure if this is proper protocol or not but I just wanted to clarify that as an employee of Mariner Software I can safely say that the method reflected in the previous post is definitely not representative of the way Mariner Software conducts business. Please contact me, stockscalper and let me how I can correct your problem. Logan Ryan Mariner Software lryan@marinersoftware.com [alert admin]

No compelling reason to switch to Montage.
Respectfully, we disagree. We have NEVER said we import the Screenwriter format. Please let us know where you read that because it wouldn't have been from Mariner. In Version 1.3 we have added the ability to _export_ Montage scripts to Screenwriter™ Export (.sex) Screenwriter. This file format is used when you wish to take your Script to scheduling or budgeting. Programs that import .sex files are: -EP Scheduling -EP Budgeting -Movie Magic Scheduling -Axium Scheduling -Gorilla -CompanyMOVE -ShowBiz Scheduling -ShowBiz Budgeting Regarding the price point.…

Apologies for the issues. Regarding receiving the serials, this email is sent automatically immediately after you place your order. Do you have a spam filter and could it have been rerouted to it? Regarding phone support, our dept has been depleted to a skeleton staff due to flu but, at last check, our call back time was under two hours. Have you left a voice mail? We would like to solve your problem but will…

Hello- I wanted to address your comments so you know they were getting through to the right people. The Final Draft import issue is one that has improved tremendously since Version 1. Many FD scripts are imported perfectly. Some still needs some tweaks. We will continue to enhance this feature as we move forward because we are well aware of how important it is. Regarding the color codes, I can't say I've heard of other report…

What happens when the script is finished?
and if a writer uses Movie Magic Screenwriter he/she won't fit into a FD work flow, I don't get your point?? We give the user the ability to work with FD via RTF and doc formats (and soon its own format). Are we going to be totally transparent with everything? no, not right away, but who is? Will we in the future? that's the goal.
