Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5600.0 (Mac OS X)

Careful with "specials"

Twice now I've purchased a license for Parallels when they offered a discount and then within a month they come out with a newer version and no upgrade (other than the regular upgrade price that means I would have spent more on the new version than I would if I had just bought it straight out). I only used the fist one for a couple times since it couldn't handle the USB device I needed Windows for (but Fusion does). So, I got the newer deal (right before 3.0 came out) just in case I needed a newer version, but got burned. So, the bottom line is: if they offer a special to upgrade, run away, since they're just trying to milk the market before the upgrade. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, so I won't be getting this product again. [alert admin]

MacPOSX 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Pricing seems high

The price listed is wrong (still): $159 for basic version, $239 for standard (single user), $359 for pro (networkable) and $100 for each additional user after 1, then $599 just for the ability to charge credit cards. If you want full accounting, add another $500 for MoneyWorks (which actually loks pretty good, but doesn't seem to have POS capability, nor the ability to charge credit cards). I'm frustrated enough with MYOB ($300+150 for additional workstations) that I'm considering other options, but with this being just about the only other option, having to dish out triple the cost of MYOB makes the cost of entry a bit steep. The $600 to run credit cards seems usurious since there's virtually no other options for doing it, especially when companies will often furnish credit card machines at no cost with a contract. MYOB AccountEdge 2007 11.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Don't get 2007 version!!!

I've been using the 2005 and 2006 versions (both regular and network edition in 2006) in my office with few problems, but ever since upgrading 2 weeks ago to the 2007 version, we've been having nothing but problems: sales defaulting to CC payments regardless of what payment type is changed to, inventory problems, even upgrading was problematic and took me (the person who usually get things to work right the first time) a good chunk of the afternoon just to get the primary workstation updated. There is no way to downgrade the data file back to the 2006 version, or I'd be using it again. That said, MYOB is the _only_ accounting program that handles credit card transactions on the Mac (QuickBooks only does it on the PC version, MacPOS can do sales but not accounting and with the $600 extra just to accept credit cards becomes less attractive). Yes, over the network, it can be slow, so whatever computer is doing the most work with it should be the host computer. Unless you are well versed in accounting and keep impeccable records (entering everything right away), you should probably be sure to get support, since if you need it you don't want to shell out $$$. VMware Fusion 1.0RC1 (Mac OS X)

Tried 'em all...

In order to use some specialized equipment, I have to run some Windows software, so I got a MacBook and set about getting as little involved in Windows as possible. Now this equipment requires a USB connection (actually does something kinda funky and hooks up 2 things by USB), so it won't work easily, but shouldn't require high-end stull. After all, people are punning it on Win 98. I also had a couple other programs that are pretty straightforward programs with nothing fancy: no 3D, no sound, etc. These should be easy, right? CrossOver was my greatest hope (since I wouldn't have to run Windows at all) but also the greatest failure: nothing would run on it. Not even the seemingly simple programs. Parallels (2.5) seemed promising: the program for the equipment would run before I got the equipment, but wouldn't actually perform with the equipment. The other programs ran fine on it, though. At this point, since I needed to get things working (Fusion didn't seem to be ready in April), I bit the bullet and bought a Windows laptop just to run this thing. Parallels comes out with version 3.0 just over a month after I paid for it (and am not using it yet) so no upgrade and no explanation of what the upgrade will do for me. In all fairness, I still haven't tried v3. I did just try VMware Fusion and it did the job flawlessly. If only I had never bought that laptop! I think I'll get a couple licenses at the current price: this can run the tough stuff. The only problem I've had with it was I couldn't get it to install Win 2000 Pro, but XP is working fine and that copy of 2K looks a bit sketchy... [alert admin]

1Passwd 2.4.2 (Mac OS X)

Way above others

I tried web confidential and password wallet, hoping to find something that would sync with the palm, which they did OK, but it was just too much work to enter everything into them and in the end I didn't use them. Once I heard about 1Passwd, I tried it out and it was just great. It pulled in passwords from the browsers and remembered (most) new ones and then I can pick which one to use. Good attention to detail: when opening 1Passwd from the browser button menu, it tried to match saves passwords to the site you were currently browsing. It seems to have stopped doing this recently, but I hardly need to do it anymore since everything works so well. There are wome places where it doesn't save the password, but maybe the new update fixes this. The autofill with different identities is great for different credit cards and locations (work/home), but only gets it right (all info in the right boxes) about 50% of the time. However, this is much better than entering everything by hand 100% of the time. Now, I never got around to trying to sync this with my palm (treo), mainly because with the .mac syncing all my computers I use now have the same password information on them. I don't need to have the passwords on my Palm since my laptops sync with my desktops via .mac! Also, the price seemed (to me) to be in line with the others (especially when they charge extra for the Palm side). After I'd dished out for the others and didn't use them, this was a much better deal. [alert admin]

SMART Utility 1.0.0B1 (Mac OS X)

Now if it would check USB and FW drives...

This would be a useful application if it would check the SMART status of USB and FireWire drives (something not built in to the operating system). Someone should be able to do it. [alert admin]

RapidRestore 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Great idea, but iDisk problem

It's a great idea, but it has problems with iDisks: for some reason I don't understand, when I save the RapidRestore file on my iDisk, I get an iDisk sync error -8088. Then the synced file won't restore, but I've been able to pull the files out of it and put them where they should go and it all works fine. [alert admin]

CottageMed 1.9.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Yay!

I've been using this for a couple months and must say that I was relieved to find and open-source medical records program (even if it does require FileMaker Pro, which is actually a good thing, since I'm not about to learn programming again). Now I can tweak the program to suit my needs and not have to worry about the developer going out of business and losing all my records (as well as having to find and learn a new program). It may take a bit of labor on my part to make the changes, but compared to people I know using Windows EMR software (huge, expensive and slow), this is just what I need. It isn't all things for all people, but it does quite a bit. Frankly, if there's something you need, just add it yourself (or hire someone to do it if you like) and then it can be added in for everyone. For lots of medical clinics that don't have lots of spare money, this is a godsend. Stefan is working on it in his spare time, and has done a remarkable job. [alert admin]

Making it stick!

Incredible! I've been looking for this for years, and it you found the secret! And it still works in 10.5! Only it works a little differently: hold down option while widening the columns and all the other windows' columns change, too. No need to click on the finder icon: you're adjusting the default as you adjust the column. In 10.4, it's still the option key with no need to click the finder icon. …

No, don't let Apple buy it!

While I agree that this is a great program, I would be distressed if Apple bought it: development would slow to a crawl and it would then be discarded once development lagged so far behind that no one uses it any more (remember Sherlock/Watson?). The best way to keep this program good is to support the developers and buy licenses for all your computers and your friend's computers..

iCal

I've had issues with iCal on 10.4 where it doesn't show any calendars unless the to-do panel is open when the program is launched. Open the to-do panel (and the search results panel and info drawer for good measure), quit the program and launch it again and see if that does it.

So, is it fixed now?

The 3.6.2 update may fix this problem. You shouldn't have needed to pay for updates to see if it were fixed: just download it and demo it with up to 3 pages and see if it's fixed. For me, 3.6 changed the way captions on photos are made (to a way that seems backwards to me). I found out by trying the demo and have stuck with 3.5 since the new version would make…

Free upgrade for after April 1 buyers

If you look here: http://www.realmacsoftware.com/feeds/rapidweaverupdates.html you'll see the upgrade is free if you bought the SW after april 1. Frankly, RW is great for me: having only made a single website with it, the time and money I've saved doing it myself easily pays for the app and the upgrade. When I need to change something, add a page, etc, I do it myself and don't have to hunt down my web developer and…

A simpler solution:

Wouldn't it be simpler just to move Mail.app to her user's Application folder (the one in her user folder rather than the one at Root)? Then it wouldn't be there for others but still would be there for her.

Turn on display sharing

I had this problem for a while, until I realized that if the connection was broken rather then being quit, the server thought the client was still attached, so wouldn't let another client connect. The solution is to select "Let clients decide" or "Always share display" from the Sharing tab on the prefs: this way it doesn't care if it still thinks the old instance was still connected.

From the mode screen, you may have to slect "Title Only Extraction" then hit the D button and then the Streams button, and deselect the video stream.
