LyX/Mac 1.4.2 ()
The download link does work - at least, it takes you to the developer's website, where you can currently download both PPC and Intel versions of the app. And for those who don't want to fiddle with teTex installations, further down the developer's website are instructions, along with a link to MacTex, which carries out the whole teTex installation from a single OS X disk image. Which so far has worked just fine for me, no fuss or bother at all. Looking forward to trying the app out now… [alert admin]

Photo to Movie 4.0.2 (Mac OS X)
As a version 1 user, if I pay for this update I will have put $89.80 into Photo2Movie. Though I think it's a great program, I'm having second thoughts about paying for another upgrade… [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 7.0 (Mac OS X)
iTunes 7.0 is definitely an odd one. I didn't have any of the problems that with installation that people talk about below; it installed fine, and it plays songs fine. The only thing that seems to have gone astray is that my imported music videos (mpg) no longer show up under Movies. That may be connected to the Get Info panel, where I can specify whether the video is a movie, music video or TV series, but the options below are only for TV series - something wrong there, I think. Oh, and I installed it on two machines, an iBook G4 and a MacBook. Importing does seem to be slower - about half-way through a CD it reached about x24 on the MacBook, and now it only reached x20 on the last song. Could be down to the CD itself, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that import on a G4 is more greatly impaired, given Apple's move away from that architecture. Nice features: gapless playback (finally) is most welcome, although the title is a bit unclear. There's an checkbox which you can select which specifies that a given album is 'gapless' - but you don't actually have to select that to get gapless playback. Everything is now gapless by default, in fact - so long as you have Crossfade Playback switched off. What the Gapless Playback option actually does is override Crossfade Playback - so you can have crossfading on and still have the Pink Floyd albums play properly. The Import Artwork is nice, but that's about it - you're obliged to sign up with the iTunes Music Store, and then iTunes will automatically download the artwork. If it can find it. If it can't find it, then iTunes sends a message to Apple. Implementation isn't that good - for the soundtrack to The Million Dollar Hotel, which has some U2 on it, iTunes downloaded the cover to the U2 greatest hits. I'll stick to using the Export Artwork app for heavy duty artwork collection/selection. There's now three ways to browse your library, and that's nice, although the Cover Browser is perhaps a little bit like turning magnification on with the Dock - great for showing off graphics, but ultimately more awkward and time consuming than anything else. Then there's the interface issues. iTunes 7 is somehow like a friend that's beeb done over by one of these make-up shows, and it doesn't really seem to work. First of all, you have to go hunting to find both the Equalizer and Visualizer: they've been relegated to the View menu, which no direct access from the iTunes window. What's up with that? And speaking of the Visualizer, the font size of the song info has been reduced, as has the size of the artwork in the corner. I normally leave that on permanently, so I can see what I'm listening to at a glance - and now I have to squint. Too small. Someone commented below that the interface looks like Linux - which is true enough, but what it reminded me of most was iTunes for Windows. All those box-like buttons and so on. It's kind of like the iTunes being ported back to the Mac. When you select a folder, it's now highlighted black - eh? what was wrong with aqua blue? Here's my worry with interface: iTunes and the iTMS are obviously gateways for Windows users to enter the Wonderful World of Mac. And the interface developments in iTunes 7.0 seem designed to make Windows users feel even more at home on Macs than before, by having iTunes look and feel like it does on XP. The problem is that it no longer looks and feels like it did on OS X. That's my impression, at least. And while there are some nice features (Gapless Playback - Yay!) too much of what gets added to iTunes is focused on bait and switch methods, rather than pure and simple functionality. So we have a flawed implementation of artwork importing to get people to sign up for the iTMS, while Visualizer and Equalizer are told to stand in a corner and face the wall. In summary, iTunes 7 is better than some of the previous major releases, which seemed to only add something new to the iTMS. But it will take some getting used to. At least it's free. Btw, does anyone remember when iTunes was only about a 7MBs download? Good times… [alert admin]

Well, I'd heard that Monolingual had a number of issues on Intel Macs so I was wary of using Delocalizer in case anything similar cropped up. But I read a thread on the Delocalizer forum (http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?t=6901) which suggested that there weren't any problems and so went ahead and ran the app. With no problems - that I've yet noticed. The main issue with Monolingual seems to be that it trashes Rosetta, so naturally the first thing I did was test a non-Universal app (I used Amadeus II) and it launched without issue. So, for what it's worth, Delocalizer still seems to work on Intel, and I saved 3600MB in the process. But at the moment my advice would still be to err on the side of caution; only go ahead if you don't mind re-installing everything. I didn't have to, but considering the possibility of a new install might help you make your decision from the right perspective. [alert admin]

Speed Download 4.0 (Mac OS X)
remixed is right, there is an important distinction between upgrades and updates. And just for the record, the last upgrade (from version 2 to version 3) was free. I still use my old version 2 password to activate version 3. So Yazsoft have only asked us to pay for an upgrade once before, and transition in question took place about three years ago. And frankly, anyone who is going to quibble about being asked to pay $15 for three years of updates and service needs to seriously rethink their understanding of the concept of shareware. I've stopped using software because of upgrade fees. I stopped using Saft when the developer decided to charge for making it Tiger compatible, and I only grudgingly pay the fees that PhotoToMovie charges. So far, though, the upgrade policy of Speed Download has been extremely fair. Sure, if you bought Speed Download 3 in February this year and don't qualify for the free upgrade, your wallet will feel the pinch a bit more. But as someone who has been using the app since version 1, and have only been asked to fork out extra cash once before, I have absolutely no qualms about buying Speed Download 4. [alert admin]

Mod UT 2k4 Installer 6.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Use the latest version of Stuffit to expand
I downloaded the Installer and my default version of Stuffit kicked in, but kept coming up with an error message (#-43) saying that a file could not be found - namely, the application (although the Read Me document was fine). I checked and discovered I still have Stuffit 7.x installed, so I updated Stuffit to 10.x, and now the message is gone, the application is there, problem solved. I don't know if Stuffit 8.x or 9.x would have the same problem, but worth making sure you have the latest version installed anyway. So - it isn't a problem with the Installer file. [alert admin]

Goliath X 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Only tested it on my iDisk, because the built-in system wouldn't connect ('Can't find the volume' error) and no problems at all. Even connected faster that the usual method does. For what I need to use it for, and to balance the last 1-star rating, I'll give it 5-stars. [alert admin]

Export Artwork 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I've been looking for something like this for absolutely ages. I've tried everything I could find on versiontracker: Clutter, Album Cover Finder, Fetch Art; you name it, I've (probably) tried it. And the best I'd found before was the Artwork Search in Media Rage.
What made that better than the rest? The overview of several covers; and multiple stores to choose from. This latter is essential, as far as I'm concerned. I'm English and live in Germany, and have a lot of cds that just don't exist on Amazon.com. In Clutter you can check several stores (includine Amazon.de) but have to enter the preferences to do so; in FetchArt you actually have to restart the application to search in a different store. In Media Rage those stores are right above the preview window. Great. Only no Amazon.de.
Enter Export Artwork. This can be set to search any of 6 Amazon stores. I've never seen an app that search the French Amazon store - great for Les Negresses Vertes. It can even be set to search them all at once all at once!
And that's not the least of it. Export Artwork can also look through your entire library and make a playlist of only those songs which are missing artwork - then go through each piece and add artwork (similar to FetchArt, but much less traumatic). It has a very elegent HTML export function (which seems to be missing an index, but there has to be room for improvement). It will resize your artwork - and you can specify that it should only do so if the original is larger than the target size (great for home-made scans). And that's all without even talking about the export functions.
Buying advice: if you need all the tools which (the $30) Media Rage has on offer - and it has a truly impressive array - then that is your application of choice. For the pure and simple album artwork fanatic, it has to be Export Artwork.

True, it isn't Universal Binary, but it worked on my MacBook. I think it crashed once during the entire game, but since the game saves automatically as you progress it wasn't a big problem. I wouldn't worry too much; download the demo and give it a go if you're not sure!

This might sound like a dumb question, but can't you just download the Panther version (do a search for Cocktail on vt). As far as I know, there was no upgrade policy or anything. I bought my copy when I was using Panther, and the same password works in the newer version. I guess a newer password might not be backward-compatible… but worth a try, if you haven't already.

Why is it people have a problem with the software and automatically jump on the IT SUCKS bandwagon? Do you honestly think Apple would ship such an awful piece of software as you describe? And then why are there so many other reviews saying how good it is, and so few complaining about it crashing every 2 minutes? Just look at the website you've posted the comment on, and it shouldn't be too difficult to…
