MacSpeech Dictate 1.3 (Mac OS X)

I screwed up the star rating and cannot seem to revise my review so I'm resubmitting here. This is a one-star product for everything except the written documentation, which is better than average. [alert admin]

MacSpeech Dictate 1.3 (Mac OS X)
I bought v 1.3 plus a bundled headset at the 2009 Mac Expo with high expectations after reading glowing reviews by David Pogue and being impressed with the demo at the Expo. Despite repeated attempts to "train" it, extensive use of the reference materials, the application is a blood-pressure-raising disaster. The last thing I dictated before coming over to versiontracker to render my opinion was "hate hate hate." At least MacSpeech got that right. Accuracy is not the main problem. The main problem is inaccurate interpretation of revision commands, together with a limited set of them, rendering it impossible to follow "the golden rule" of dictation programs, which is not to mix speech with typing. Time and again I have dictated paragraphs only to find them irrevocably disappear because the program's selected all the dictation and deleted it when I just wanted to undo my last command. A multiple undo function seems like a no-brainer in a program like this but it doesn't exist. The capper is a decidedly unhelpful and niggardly return policy. Forget about a refund if you're not happy with the program. Their position is "it's your fault." [alert admin]

Photo to Movie 4.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I've been using P to M in various versions for several years. The app continues to improve through the new releases. P to M is MUCH better at combining movement (Ken Burns), titles and sound than iPhoto plus iMovie, particularly because it is more flexible on allowing you to move around the frame. There are definitely still improvements that need to be made in UI and my one major complaint is that the manual should be re-written from scratch. The developers are aware of this and I think are working on it. Special kudos to the developers for their tech support. I've been critical of them in the past -- as it turned out because I wasn't getting their responses due to my spam filter -- but no more. Every question/problem that I've had in my recent usage has been answered promptly and they've stuck with it until the issue was fixed. That's worth a star right there (note, in my star rating I'm rating the support, not the documentation.) [alert admin]

PictureSync 1.8r15 (Mac OS X)
I've been looking for a way to upload to Shutterfly efficiently from Aperture. This program seems to work like a charm. Stable and easy to use. However, $30 seems a bit steep to me for what can be done, admittedly much less reliably, using various free browser plug-ins (including Shutterfly's). Though I use Aperture, I'm an amateur photographer, not a professional. I'd pay $15 to support the shareware though. [alert admin]

It's ridiculous that Address Book does such a bad job of printing labels. This little app mostly fills the bill. Be sure to read the "read me" file so that you understand how to load the Avery templates. My only quibbles are that the font sizes seem to come out on the labels much larger than they should for some reason (an Ariel 10 looks more like an Ariel 12) and that there doesn't seem to be a way to fine-tune line-spacing. Also, printing seems slow from this app. But hey, the program's free and it works! [alert admin]

TimeNet 3.8 (Mac OS X)
Forget the invoicing if you bill monthly like most people ![]()

I had high hopes for this program, having tried most of the timekeeping software out there. I bought the program based on a week's worth of using it and before I had tried printing an invoice because I assumed, based on the developer's description, that printing an invoice would be a snap. Well, it is -- but not if you want to specify a specific date range for your invoice, for example to cover time billed during a particular month. To me, this is an absolutely basic function of any program that calls itself an integrated timekeeping-billing program, yet TimeNet doesn't do it -- unless you want to start a new "project" for each time period. I'm also really disappointed in their tech support, where posts both on their support board and directly to their tech support guru went unanswered for over a week ... and counting. What's more, the only way to export is to an RTF file, which has meant that I spent hours converting my data via various workarounds to an excel format where I was able to finally turn it into an invoice covering the period I wanted. I'm giving the program two stars rather than one because what it does it does reasonably well, but between the lack of support and the inability to do a monthly invoice, my heart says it only deserves one. I'm now testing OfficeTime. First thing I did was confirm that It can produce basic invoices for any designated period. I also got a response on a tech support issue within 24 hours. [alert admin]

MassReplaceIt 2.9.1 (Mac OS X)
Was looking for something to search through all my documents and get rid of characters that my NAS backup drive didn't like. I gave up on Automator and tried Renamer4Mac, which was OK, but this seems better. First, it has a good clear preview option which allows you to selectively accept or reject changes. Second it has an undo in case you screw up. Third it's very fast on search. And last, you can set up multiple search criteria easily and save them as one search. (I think Renamer can do this too.) Very light help manual, but hey it's free! [alert admin]

Contact us directly -- response from LQ Graphics
I contacted LQ Graphics directly after my most recent posting here and this time received a detailed response from the company. It does appear that they responded to my emails and that the responses were filtered out by my ISP (though they did not appear in my spam filter.) It also appears that many of the bugs I mentioned have been addressed in updates and that the company is working on redoing its user manual. It's unfortunate that the folks at LQ Graphics seems hostile to any critical postings and that they view the fact that their email responses to me were filtered out by my ISP as MY problem rather than theirs, or, most fairly, an unfortunate fact of internet life these days. Still, I give them points for following through this time and correcting the problem. I haven't had the opportunity to check out the latest version, but if the bugs are fixed I would give the program high rating. Having used iMovie recently instead of PTM, I can say iMovie certainly has some faults of its own and is much more limited in what it can do, though IMO, as of the v. 4.0 of PTM, iMovie handles sound tracks better than PTM. In fact, the last time I used PTM I used it for the photos, imported into iMovie and then used iMovie for the sound track. I'll update my rating for PTM after I have a chance to use the latest version, but consider my comments on lack of tech support retracted. [alert admin]

"Contact us Directly" -- if only that had worked
I gave up trying to get tech support via emails to LQGraphics after three or four tries with no response. It was only then that I chose to post here at Versiontracker. I also make a point of posting positive feedback, especially when it involves support. Check my other reviews if you want. And sorry guys, it ain't because your responses got eaten by my spam filter. A more appropriate response from LQ Graphics would have been: "Hey, we're a small company doing our very best. Occasionally we get overwhelmed. Sorry. How can we help?" [alert admin]

Photo to Movie 4.0.0 (Mac OS X)
I used the previous version 3.3 and gave the product a generally good review. This latest release seems very buggy and there has been zero, zip, and zilch response to repeated email questions to the developer. As a result, the product is as frustrating to use as it is cool when it works. If I had to do it over again, I think I might invest more time in seeing if I could do what I wanted with iMovie alone. Bugs/problems include: exporting directly to iDVD, infuriating reversions to prior scrubber position in timeline while trying to edit, crashes while using the photo reorganization window, repeated problems dealing with sound editing. The manual is complete without being in the slightest bit informative. Terms are used repeatedly without being explained or instructions are simply circular. Here's one of my favorites: "Holding down the key while making any selection extends the current selection to the new selection." WHICH key to hold down is never stated! So far as I'm aware PTM is the only product out there that allows much more sophisticated panning/zooming than the limited Ken Burns effect in iPhoto. It also allows you to add titles. If you must use this app, I recommend using it only for the photos, then export to iMovie and use iMovie to add sound. [alert admin]

Sorry, but while I haven't used Omniplan, I use Omnigraffle all the time and I disagree with the general slam on Omnigroup products. Omnigraffle is a pleasure to use and I'm constantly amazed at how many different ways it's proven useful. I've also never had any problem with tech support on the product.
