Library Books 2.6b202 (Mac OS X)
Loved it for a long time but not working right now
It might be that it isn't as compatible with my library's new system but Library Books no longer has a green star in the menu to let me know my hold items are available. It shows how many books I have checked out and how many are on hold that are not available. The library website has been updated and is organized differently than it used to be. I am hoping that Library Books will have an update making it more compatible in the future. [alert admin]

Tivo Desktop 1.94 (055) (Mac OS X)
Lets me backup my TiVo recordings but needs documentation
This free application lets you watch or listen to photos, music and videos from your Mac on your TiVo. My TiVo died 4 months out of warranty and I lost over 200 gigabytes of recordings that I had been saving to watch (like whole seasons of shows). With Toast and TiVo To Go, I am able to transfer my TiVo recordings from the DVR to my Mac's hard drive, but with TiVo Desktop, I can transfer it back to the TiVo to play on my big screen TV. This is a good way to keep a backup of stuff I record with the TiVo in case it should ever die again. It might also be a good way to make more room on my TiVo's hard drive if needed. The trick to being able to transfer a TiVo recording from my Mac to the TiVo using TiVo Desktop is this: It is a hidden trick--go into the System Preferences and COMMAND-click on TiVo Desktop (after it is installed and set up). You will then see 3 tabs, one for your iPhoto Library, one for iTunes and one for Videos. The video folder can be wherever you tell it to be. When you click to Start sharing from TiVo Desktop, you can go to your TiVo and the "Now Playing" and see a computer icon then view the TiVo video files you have on your Mac and start watching them. I should mention that your TiVo needs to be networked with your Mac to use this software. I have mine networked with the wireless adapter and a wireless router, but you could just use an Ethernet cable directly from a router to the TiVo. This is great software and it is free. My only complaint is that there is no user guide that comes with it and learning all the hidden tricks requires searching online at different forums. I would like to know if there are other video formats that I can view with this software on my TiVo besides the TiVo files I transfer from the TiVo. I believe there are other formats, but I don't know what they are. [alert admin]

Toast Titanium 9.0.2 (Mac OS X)
I am having better luck with Popcorn 3 than Toast 9
I recently got a TiVo and was thrilled when I could use TiVo Transfer in Toast to take my recordings from the TiVo to my Mac and export to other devices like my iPod or burn to DVD to watch on another TV via a dvd player. Toast 8 has this ability and so does Popcorn. The big new feature in Toast 9 is that it allows you to edit the video before you do something with it--like cutting out unwanted parts such as commercials or extra footage before and after a show. I was really excited about this new ability, which is the same feature people have had with EyeTV all along. Using the video editing and exporting to my iPod works great in Toast 9 although it does take a very long time to export the video. The problem I am having is that when I want to put the TiVo recordings onto a DVD to watch in any dvd player--many of my efforts have come out with the audio and video out of sync. And all of the the DVD Video output are downgraded in quality. The video looks great watching it from the TiVo and not too great after Toast 9 gets done with it. I decided to try Popcorn (since I have it) to put some TiVo video onto a DVD. I cannot edit any of the video using Popcorn but I did find out that by going into the Encode settings and telling Popcorn to NEVER reencode, it will multiplex the video rather than encode it. I end up with good quality video that plays just fine on my DVDs. Plus it is very quick. I tried to use the same setting in Toast 9 to NEVER reencode, but it just ignores it. It encodes and takes a very long time and downgrades the quality. And there is a very good chance the audio and video will be out of sync. So, as far as I am concerned--the best reason to get Toast 9 would be for the ability to edit video in Toast Video Player (from TiVo files). But if I end up with crappy quality output, I may as well just use Popcorn which costs about half the price. On the other hand, if I mostly wanted to export edited video from TiVo to my iPod, then it seems to work pretty well. [alert admin]

Griffin Final Vinyl 2.5 (Mac OS X)
This is my first time to ever use Final Vinyl and I had no problems hooking up my Denon turntable to my Mac via an iMic (although I think I could have just used the RCA to mini plug). I converted a double LP album which was recorded live. That made it hard to detect all the tracks because there is talking and clapping between songs. Apparently, Final Vinyl can detect tracks automatically, which is very nice, but I could not find any way to delete pops and snaps as you can with Audacity. [alert admin]

Same here. I even booted from another volume in Tiger and still cannot get past the volume to choose for installation. I am now running DiskWarrior and hoping it will help.

If you are trying to rename the whole collection of, say Movies, or Music or Books, I don't think you can rename those, but you can create new collections from within those categories, including Smart Collections. Try Control-clicking on a collection from the Drawer window. If it is re-nameable, you can do it from there. If not, create new collections and name them whatever you want.
