Journler 2.5 (Mac OS X)
This is the best Organizer/Notetaker I have used. It's simple and intuitive interface are perfect for me. It doesn't hog system resources, it is quick to start, and it works. I've had SOHO Notes (AKA StickyBrain) for a couple years now, and it works OK, but it just isn't very good for specialized notetaking (ie - college work). I still use SOHO Notes for keeping track of a lot of other random junk, but not for notetaking. While JOURNLER can't handle all the different data types, and doesn't have all the features that SOHO Notes has, I found I didn't use all that stuff. I have used Journler for a few months now and have been with the Beta testing phase for version 2.5. The developer does a great job with support and is really inspired to get it right and add just the right features without overdoing it. Very few program I have would get 5 stars. This gets it! First, let me comment on something that happened during the install of this. The installer looked very modern and smooth, but froze up on me at one point - at least it appeared to be frozen. I decided to give it a few more minutes and when I came back from my break, the installer had finished. It struck me as very odd as I've never had a single program take this long to install, and I've got some big ones on here. I'll come back to this later, but let me go on to the program itself The program started fine and the layout was pretty straight forward. It gave you nice little selections between the different iPod and AppleTV formats. My only stickler with this is that most programs of this type don't truly optimize the values for different screen formats (16:9 & 2.35:1). They keep the width the same and just crop the height. Seeing that the AppleTV isn't out there yet, it's still nice to see somone giving at least including that format in their program - hopefully with optimizing this later on when the AppleTV is in hand. Programs such as iSquint and Handbrake offer a similarly intuitive interface, but are free. And programs such as ffmpegX offer much more flexibility at a cheaper price (though ffmpegX is a more complex layout). One feature I like here is their "PAUSE" button. This is great for laptop users who can't alway keep their machine in one spot and need to put it to sleep to change locations. It is also great for those that need to temporarily gain back their processor usage for something else. I have not seen this in the other programs I mention. My own quirks & nit-picky observations: I'm aptly labeling this paragraph so you can take it with a grain of salt. These are my subjective observations of a few things on the product. The first thing that made me go, "What?", was the comment that the product does '...200% conversion speed, beyond your imagination.' Uh, OK. Don't know what to say about that. The day someone can crank out video conversion at speeds beyond my imagination, I shall be impressed. I'm not. Next was the fact that this product was labeled version 3.1.9.0131 reminds me of when I first got a check book and started with check #207 so no one would think this was my first check. I am not able to verify if any previous version ever existed. Also, the company website of MP4Converter Software Studio appears to be one of those many video conversion and ripping software sites that I see for PC's. Finally, on the site, I do not see any phone number or address for contact - just a support & sales email address. For such a vast website, I am surprised that there doesn't seem to be a lifeline besides an email contact. Remember, these are only my little observations that made my spidey senses tingle a little bit. Now back to something that really bothered me. The day after the install, I noticed my computer running rather strange. In fact, I could no longer open "Activity Monitor" which I run almost all the time to see what programs are doing what. When that failed to open, I quickly ran a 'Repair Permissions'. It seems every file on my computer had its permissions corrupted. After the repair, all is running well again. After having a Mac for 5 years, I have never seen this problem. I have never had more than a few files with corruupt permissions, and I have never had an install that mysteriously ran for 10 minutes without telling me what it was doing. All and all, I'm going to stay away from this one. Though I really like that PAUSE button. [alert admin]

DVD Releases Widget 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I think this widget has some great potential. I like the layout and the features. The one thing I would like to see possibly is the current price on Amazon (or where ever) so I don't have to click on it and have my web browswer open. By the way, click on the "little DVD" and watch it spin :) The only issue now keeping me from using it is the Processor Usage. It seems to be sucking the most amount of CPU time out of all my widgets when in Dashboard mode. I've got about a dozen other widgets running and none use even half the CPU time as this. Also, when I return to my normal desktop mode, the widget still seems to be using the CPU at almost the same rate. Hopefully this will just be a small fix for the next release. This is the only thing holding me back from recommending the product. [alert admin]

kip 1.0 (Mac OS X)
This app does have great potential. I hope the author keeps going with it. I was just about to suggest this app, even with its few issues, when it crashed. With the crash added to some of the other oddities, I can't suggest it at this time. Hopefully, future revs will take care of some of the more obvious issues. PROs: - Great idea. As soon as I opened the program, I realized how nice this would be to store all my documents. It even gives a handy little way to scan in documents (which does work). - I love the little magnified preview when you drab your mouse over the document. At first I thought this was some real cheesy novelty but quickly saw the value in being able to get a closer inspection of the thumbnail preview. - Keyword idea is excellent. - Easy navigation and simple layout! - Help manuals included with package (of course in PDF format). Read them. - Allows for storage to .Mac accounts. - Like that little "NEW" tag for recently imported PDF files. CONS: - Mail interface does not give choice to other popular email clients like Entourage. - Scanning gives no way to edit scanning preferences. It scans, but I don't know the color or resolution or cropping preferences. - Keywords are implemented rather oddly. The left hand column of keywords are all different sizes. Very icky feeling. - Two default settings don't seem to be chosen well: (1) Auto syncs to .Mac. Must turn this off and delete files from iDisc Documents if you don't want it. (2) Automatically adds keywords. Deselect this unless you want a bunch of non-relavent keywords for every document you import. Or at least update the automatic keyword selections. - Still crashes ocassionally. - Imports should have some progress bar to let you know what is going on. Also, the main/home page doesn't always update after an import. [alert admin]

LaCie SilverKeeper 1.1.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I've used this app from 1.1.3 (maybe even 1.1.2), and have been very happy with it. It's not the most graceful looking thing, but I have it set up to run when I sleep; so I don't ever have to worry about it. I occassionally perform Boot-Up from my external FireWire drive just to test it out - never had a problem. Note: If you have a notebook and need to Boot from the external drive, make sure the Firewire is plugged directly in to the laptop. It does its job, and best of all it is FREE. I even ended up buying 2 LaCie drives just because of this software. I figure if they give me something like this for free, I might as well patron them. For someone who really needs a pretty and super simple interface, then I might suggest Super Duper. It is also a very easy program to use. It's just when I factor in that FREE part, it was a no-brainer for me. [alert admin]

iStat nano 1.5 (Mac OS X)
While I absolutely love the "iStat Pro" widget, this one is even better. I have a 12" PoweBook G4, and when I'm not plugged in to my big screen, real estate is critical. The "iStat Nano" gives just the right size widget for my purposes. I'd love to see the "fan" option that iStat Pro has, but that part hasn't been working for me anyway. Another great widget. iStat pro 2.3 (Mac OS X)
This is awesome. Gives me just about every stat I want for my computer. Seems to not be compatible with every bit of Mac hardware out there, but it is pretty darn close. For my PowerBook G4, the only thing it does not register correctly is the fan. [alert admin]

D-Vision 3.2.1 (Mac OS X)
This is the first time trying to use this program, and was not able to get it to run the first time. I'll hold off on rating the product as I've seen some really good reviews, and the new Universal Binary might be causing some issues. My problem happened during the first run. The D-3 installer needed to further install "Dynamic lybraries...". However, when I go back to "Launch D-Vision3", it tells me that I need to run the little installer program. This loop repeats itself. Therefore, I am never able to open D-Vision. I do have some other ripping and encoding software installed, and I wonder if possible different versions of DivX, mencoder, ffmpeg, etc. could be causing issues with this little installer program. Anyone have ideas or know where I could look? The forum on the owner's website is not in English. I knew I should have paid more attention in my language classes during high school :) [alert admin]

This is a really great review and seems to cover most aspects of the program fairly (both the good and the ugly). Make sure you check out the review if you are looking at programs for your DVD Collection.

A manual was compiled in PDF format with all the pages from the online HTML manual. You can get it from the following link: http://www.iwascoding.de/downloads/GarageSale_Manual_12.06.06.pdf It's not pretty, but it looks complete. Good for offline viewing if needed.

I agree the program can be a little slow, and I would like to see that improved. However, I again look at alternatives. I have have found GarageSale to be much speedier than alternative programs. One thing I have done to help speed up the program more is to disable the 'Enable Listing Preview Designs' in the "View" menu. This will speed up things when Previewing your design templates. It…

To turn off the linked image, it is rather simple. In fact, it gives you the option to put in your own Signature or Company Logo in every auction. I consider this an awesome feature. To turn it off, simple go to "Preferences". You will see at the bottom of the "General Preferences" a checkbox labeled 'Include Item Footer in Description'. Uncheck this box, or include your own automated logo for every…

DrDocument, After running the 1st optimization with 4.1.2, have subsequent optimizations also taken 2-3 hours as well? I have not yet installed the latest version, but was wondering if they went about their optimization a little different in this update, hence the 1st time through might take a little longer. -Mike

After trying Entourage Sync Services last month, I now have a phobia of any sync related products. I have tried things from e2Sync, Microsoft (Sync Services & Entourage Conduit), and PocketMac. All of which either completely did not work, had severe limitations, corrupted my data, and in some cases locked up my Apple apps forcing a reset of all data. Besides the severe sync limitations with Entourage Sync Services, my iCal was completely hosed,…

I have been using this script for about 2 years now, and it is the best thing out there in regards to Entourage syncing. I realize the script is a little complex and takes a little bit to get it set up the first time. However, after that, I have found it to be the most flexible tool available. I don't have to set up any special categories and sync to only…

Yes, I have the latest 3.2.1 version. I'm looking at the "Get Info" or "More Info" with regard to the App. The version is listed as "D-Vision version 3.2.1, Copyright 2006 Ludovic PAQUOT". Do you know if I can install an older version and then possibly just upgrade to this? Would that fix it? Thanks.

I still had problems after trying every recommendation from El Gato on this matter. There still seemed to be some lingering channels and info from a previous location where I had lived. The 2.01 update fixed this problem for me. Now all display info shows correctly.
