ScreenEdit 1.0.7 (Mac OS X)

I just love it...

...when developers drop an app on you without a word of instruction. I have so much time to spend experimenting with this and that, trying to figure out what does what and why I would want to do it. I should qualify that we are given instructions in how to install/uninstall, but, as I said, not a word on how to use it. OK, so I managed to save a file as the default "My Slideshow.mov," but attempting to open it, Quicktime tells me it is not a movie. What's next? [alert admin]

In-Poculis Mahjong 2.65 (Mac OS X)

Freeware, et al

Of course something's not right. For whatever reason, there are a LOT of developers out there who simply don't comprehend that "freeware" means "an app that doesn't cost anything, not now, not later, not ever." Functionally or time limited demo versions are NOT freeware. OTOH, the download is named as a demo, but after playing it for a while, I saw no features disabled or nags to indicate that I should register and pay for it.

Be that as it may, this developer seems incredibly infatuated with every special effect imaginable, from the way the tiles flow onto the field to the way a match is indicated. I am inclined to think that if the eye candy was to be scaled back, it would not take forever to load and it would perform a tad faster.

I am not especially enamored of apps that provide for absolutely no preferences, however minimal. I don't want music, never will, but I have to turn it off manually every time I play. I am also not in favor of absolutely no capacity for interaction via menu. I would like to undo with a command-z or start a new game with a command-n [alert admin]

Samfind Bookmarks Bar 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Nice idea, but...

Nice if you NEED to make your bookmarks available for use on other computers, but if you never travel, never use any computer but your own, it's hardly worth the effort (i.e., waiting for it to update). Either the server is exceptionally slow or exceptionally busy, neither of which are conducive to general on-the-fly bookmarking.

Help is minimal: too much time is spent on what it can do, instead of how to do it. It took me a while to find out, but no, you're not stuck with the default category set. Yes, you can add/remove categories, even create your own, both on the very slow website.

I'll recommend it ONLY if you NEED it. In its present state, I wouldn't recommend it for general bookmarking.

If this is going to be generally useful, Samfind really needs to speed things up, and the instructions need to be broadened. [alert admin]

All well and good...

CLIX 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Huh?

What the hell is ".bz2" and how the hell do I open it? Why can't people stick to common compression methods? [alert admin]

GizmoMarks 1.2.8 (Mac OS X)

Needs work

It's not just the extremely poor English translation**, it's not just the inaccuracies in the Help, it's not just the fact that the website offers no way to get in touch with the developer, it's not just the strange interface behaviors*.

No, not just one of those things: all of them combined make it somewhat difficult to use. This is all I have found in the first 5 minutes of trying it out. I'm not going to bother looking for more.

Most definitely not ready for Prime Time.

*Typically, if one tries to quit an app, you will be asked if you want to save your document. "Yes" and "No" are just that obvious, "Cancel" usually means "abort the quit and go back to the document." Not here. "Cancel" closes the existing document as if you have clicked "No."
**I don't mean to be a linguistic elitist here, but if you are going to market a product (free or not) to Anglophones, you can't just use an online service to translate for you.

PDF Merge 2.4 (Mac OS X)

Someone explain to me...

...why I would want to pay $14 for for this, when PDFLab does a lot more for free?

PDFLab treats a multi-page PDF as separate pages and allows you to add or delete individual pages. This is nowhere near as flexible.

I understand Preview will do much the same, but only in Leopard. Still, free. [alert admin]

RightWebPage 0.11.4 (Mac OS X)

Single Use App?

I was able to obtain a report using the default settings. I corrected a site error it told me about, but when I tried to run the report again to test my correction, RightWebPage repeatedly crashed. PPC OSX 10.4.11 [alert admin]

Immediate Bug

I should also mention that the DMG as received is named 1.3.5, but the Audacity file is identified in Preview as 1.3.4.

Finally works

It may be on a par with Apple Mail or Entourage, but it still isn't Eudora. I am among those who is still rather amazed at how these people have the audacity to rationalize using the Eudora name to publish a repackaged Thunderbird, by saying their intent is to complement Thunderbird. "Complement" means one thing enhances the other, and the very nature of the concept means that both have to be used at the same time. How…

Command line installation

This download instruction places the tar.gz file in your home directory, yes, but it still has to be expanded/unarchived before you execute the terminal command as described in the readme. COMPLETE instructions are in order, I think, both here and in the readme. Far too much is left to figure out on one's own. The email address in the readme is useless (why bother including it?), because Marius Schamschula doesn't respond to questions, and it costs $25…

Could Someone Clear This Up?

You might have read that Penelope was a plugin for TBird, but Eudora is a standalone app. Virtually identical to TBird, containing absolutely none of the old Eudora functionality and flexibility.

FMChecker Preview is FREE and valuable

No, it is NOT free! It is a PREVIEW (or, at the very least, a "Lite" version). The term "freeware" describes a fully functional application for you pay nothing, not now, not ever. An app which will run in a partially disabled mode (even without time limitation) until you pay for it is still SHAREWARE. Take an example from Qualcomm: The same install can be used in the feature-limited free mode, the unlimited sponsored mode,…
