Safari 3.1.1 Webkit update messing with PJ
Looks like the Webkit update in the Safari 3.1.1 update did something bad to PJ, the playback is now extremely choppy/unlistenable :( [alert admin]

Firefox 2.0.0.10 (Mac OS X)
I'm not saying that people do not have issues with it, but the level of whining about a product that is FREE to all is baffling to me, particularly with the security features it has. Took me a while to be convinced that FF was better than the old Mozilla, but with 2.x the product became my defacto choice. The fact that it is cross-platform is also a big benefit, since I can have the same browsing experience on any machine I am likely to use. And that experience includes Adblock Plus & NoScript, which work great and eliminate a large set of possible attack vectors via the Web into my computers. [alert admin]

JollysFastVNC 0.96.2 (Mac OS X)
Hoch soll Jolly leben! I am now happily live dragging windows through a VPN tunnel at 1024x768 and 16-bit with low bandwidth Tight encoding. Quite a bit of artifacting with small font size text, but all as expected and very usable. Prima! One thing that would be nice is an additional info window or menu with some statistics on the current connection, chiefly what bit depth and encoding was negotiated between the client and server. (Connection Info... item in CotVNC). [alert admin]

JollysFastVNC 0.92 (Mac OS X)
One of merits of VNC was that it supported remote video over low-bandwidth links. I have used VNC 10 years ago over a 56k modem link to manage servers. This is due to its ability to compress the video. As it stands, without the better compression encodings, Jollys is pretty much the SLOWEST VNC viewer over a restricted bandwidth link. I understand that the original implementation was made for the use of the author's remote control application; as a straight screen mirroring application it's fine, and the screen scaling is nice. The interface is also promising. But some of the review hyperbole I've read is not (yet) warranted. Some of the other implementations (particularly Chicken of the VNC), seem to have inefficient network implementations when used on high-bandwidth networks, with high screendepth and pixel size displays. But as I noted, this was originally not the purpose of the VNC protocol. CotVNC still beats the pants off this implementation over a 3M/512k ADSL link running through a VPN connection; Jollys at 1280x1024 and 32 bit depth is unusably slow, while CotVNC, while sluggish, can be used. This is due to the Chicken supporting the Tight encoding. For me, the contender loses by knockout because of this difference in speed in the application in which VNC is most necessary. If Jolly implements Tight, I think it will merit its title.... [alert admin]

AlmostVPN 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Extremely complicated UI, bugs ![]()

I've used the original AVPN 0.9 revisions for some time ; the interface for that was almost as complicated as using the command line to set up a tunnel (I had to refer to the ssh man page to configure it), but the autostart features were handy. With the AVPN Pro, it is now arguably MORE complicated to try and use this than to use a command line. Much feature support has been added for additional service types, making the UI even less comprehensible than before. I'm talking about configuring a simple ssh tunnel for a VNC connection. Also not helping is that the import of config from AVPN apparently doesn't work. My working AVPN config does not start in AVPN Pro, it appears to be attempting a password login even though I have it configured to use an id_dsa file. I also got a hard crash duplicating, and then deleting an existing configuration. Went back to 0.9.x. [alert admin]

Doesn't crash using Tight encoding from CotVNC, for one thing. But does seem to be generally faster than the previous release of OSXVnc. [alert admin]

viJournal Lite 1.6.6 (Mac OS X)
When I hit the 'Create' button, the dialog box sits there stubbornly, mocking me. The journal directory has write permissions; there are no error messages I can find. The only non-standard thing I did was to immediately create a new journal and delete the default one before attempting to create an entry. Issue persists across multiple starts of the app. [alert admin]

Aquamacs Emacs 0.9.9c (Mac OS X)
Still prefer XEmacs, even with having to run the X11 environment (actually run it in Terminal most of the time). Zero effort install using fink, probably available using DarwinPorts, though I haven't checked. Very nice effort though! [alert admin]

So, unlike the Anger Management candidate in the next comment, I agree that removing a working feature seems kind of dumb. However, wanted to note the Control-ScrollWheel feature silently introduced in 10.4.8. You can magnify with the scroll wheel now in CoreImage capable GPUs.

Actually, the full viJournal has export capability, albeit not in the most intuitive manner. You have to select all the desired entries in the Browser and then select Save A Copy As... which will allow you your RTF format. Would be nice to have a one stop function for this.

Feels like 1994 all over again
Dude, you realize that this is a BROWSER suite, yes? As in it would make sense that it opens WEB PAGES in a BROWSER, as 98% of users will want to do 98% of the time.

The best, only because there's nothing else
Love the pissed off invective - it's free, and there is source available - show everyone yo skeeelz and fix the pref system. No? Perhaps it just doesn't matter all that much, eh? Don't understand the issue at all. Being old school, I must have 132 columns, Green on Black, and Lucida Sans Typewriter. Took me all of like 25 seconds to figure out the Profile concept and have that set as my defaults. Of course, I'm…
