Computer Glasses 1.3.0 (Mac OS X)

More nice but not needed

In addition to Argyll's tip which only works in later versions of 10.4, zooming with the keyboard has been in OS X since version 10.2 (maybe even 10.1...I can't remember for sure). After using the Universal Access preference pane or the command-option-8 keyboard shortcut to turn the feature on, users can zoom in and out using command-option-= (I usually think of it as plus) for zooming in and command-option-minus for zooming out. The zoom follows the mouse cursor and can be used variably up to (I think) 20 times magnification. There are several options in the preference pane for controlling aspects of the zoom as well. Computer Glasses is nice, but I just can't think of a situation where it would be more useful than the built-in zoom other than possibly for a screen shot where the whole screen was wanted. Proteus 4.09 (Mac OS X)

This update demonstrates why Proteus is such a good product

The developers quickly put out version 4.09 to fix all the (admittedly big and annoying) bugs in 4.08. I now have almost nothing to complain about. Proteus is a great product, and I highly recommend it. It's much better than almost every other multi-protocol service out there and at least somewhat better than the ones it's not much better than. I'll say that iChat is stronger in some areas, but since that's just AIM, there really is no decisions to make. [alert admin]

Microsoft Virtual PC 6.1.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

6.1.0 update forced me to reactivate

I haven't really had the chance to use it much yet, but installing the 6.1.0 update made XP think my "hardware had changed" so I had to reactivate. Talk about annoying. [alert admin]

Proteus 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Lots of promise

Proteus has lots of good ideas and has much of the core implemented fairly well. However, even in version 3.0, it still has MANY bugs and usability issues tha hamper its total usefulness. The added proxy support does not seem to work, it didn't correctly import enough settings from version 2.x for me to be able to log in to any of my services. I had to set them all back up. Buddy lists seem to work well from the servers and you can now actually delete a buddy from Proteus (a very annoying bug from 2.2). It does not handle problems connecting well at all and crashes pretty quicly when I start it up when behind a firewall. There are many other miscellaneious bugs, but it really is not ready for prime time. [alert admin]

Eudora 6.0b18 (Mac OS 9)

Welcome changes

It's really about time for some of these features. That said, the SPAM filter seems to work quite well, and is definitely easy to use. I started to get pretty disheartened with Qualcomm after the huge delay with the OSX version, but things are coming around. [alert admin]

MSN Messenger 3.5.0 (Mac OS X)

I'm actually somewhat…

impressed. For a file that doubled in size, you actually get some new features. HTTP proxy support finally makes it so I don't have to use the PC version with VPC. It does have its issues, though. It uses the keychaing but not quite correctly. The setup prompts you for a password and then it goes to keychain (presumably for storage) rather than going to keychain first to get a previously stored password. It doesn't use the system prefernces for downloads but (even though it is stored separately) at least read the proxy settings once you've chosen "I use a proxy". It doesn't handle connection interruptions very well. The PC version rarely disconnects through our proxy, but this one seems to be quite happy to disconnect very regularly. Unlike K.K.T., CPU usage is generally below 2% (Ti500). All in all though, it's not too bad. [alert admin]

NotePod 1.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

The base virus-scanning…

utility really is pretty good, albeit very slow. The graphical front-end on the other hand is lousy. I have Stuffit Expander set to open Virex after it expands a file. If Virex is already open (usually from another download), it doesn't honor the scan request. Also, it crashes pretty much any time an archive contains more than a few hundred files. What really annoys me was McAfee tech support telling me to use a web scanner when I tried to submit a bug report about the crashing. Obviously they don't much care if the product works properly. Finally, x4macosfotog you may be right that updating is not so important. However, just because a person might not NEED to update doesn't mean it shouldn't be as easy to do so with this version as it was with prior versions. [alert admin]

PTHClock 1.6.1 (Mac OS X)

It works ok,…

but the text doesn't match that of the rest of the menu bar. Also, there is no way to configure what is shown. For instance, I like having the day of the week. [alert admin]

McAfee abandons individual users in 7.7

None of the 7.x products have been easily available for individual users unless you used .Mac. I was able to get 7.0 by jumping through some hoops, but since then their online store has been as you described.
