Synk Pro 6.2 (Mac OS X)

solid product

I've been using Sync Pro for several months now. Prior to v6.2, it was pretty buggy. It didn't crash much, but had lots of problems with deciding whether a file needed backing up. (Have a look at the Synk forums at the developers site for an accurate snapshot of the problems people are having with the software.) v6.2 however is a very solid product. No crashes and handles my backup needs without errors. The best feature of Synk is that it has a daemon that can do all the backup chores without the main app running. Very convenient. The only issues I have now is that the new GUI in v6.2 was initially a bit confusing, and Synk doesn't gracefully deal with scheduled backup operations to network drives when I disconnect my computer (laptop) from the network for travel. It doesn't crash, but scheduled operations don't automatically resume when reconnecting to the network. I've been told that the authors are working on this though. [alert admin]

JollysFastVNC 0.92 (Mac OS X)

not nearly as fast as VNCViewer...

The server list and fit-to-window features are nice, but at this time, its not nearly as fast as VNCViewer (by Robert Kedoin). If it can match/surpass the speed of VNCViewer, it would become my new default client. [alert admin]

its beta software

Sheesh. Its beta software. The Mozilla website plainly states that only developers and willing beta testers should use 2.0b1. If you want stable, then use one of the stable releases. If you don't like the retro look, then install the Firefoxy user interface element set. Firefox has many other very useful add-ons too such as Flashblock (my favorite) and Adblock. [alert admin]

FireFix 1.5 (Mac OS X)

v1.5 jacked up?

Tried launching FireFix v1.5, and I get a dialog box saying that CaminoKnight must have assistive enabled to work. Seems that something's wrong. [alert admin]

TinkerTool 3.5 (Mac OS X)

startup crash with dashboard disabled

Be careful about disabling the Dashboard. I set this option on my G3 iBook running 10.4.1, and now the computer crashes on startup with the multilanguage "please force restart your computer" message. [alert admin]

FruitMenu 3.4.1 (Mac OS X)

speed

For me, still not any faster at initially populating submenus. Nevertheless, a great product. [alert admin]

GraphClick 2.5b (Mac OS X)

getting there...

2.5b is a nice step forward. Much easier to setup the axes values, and seems to be much faster. Still at least one minor bug that I've seen though. [alert admin]

MacGhostView 3.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

free alternatives but...

There may be free alternatives for viewing PS files, but MGV can do much more than view PS files. If all you want to do is view PS files, then MGV may be overkill, but if you need to convert between file formats and have control over the conversion options with an easy-to-use GUI, then MGV is a great choice. Microsoft Office 2004 11.1.0 (Mac OS X)

install fails...

Tried running the 11.1.0 installation, and each time, it fails. Followed the updater instructions. Tried running the updater several times. Tried repairing permissions and rebooting. Tried running the updater on a clean install of Office 2004. Each time, the updater gives a dialog box that says, "An error prevented the update from completing. 11002:2,-15". Anyone seen this? Have a fix for it? [alert admin]

not nearly as fast as VNCViewer...

Connects are over a local network running at 1 Gbit/s speeds. The servers are few year old PC boxes running RealVNC servers. The client machine is a G4 1.5 GHz Powerbook running 10.4.10.

Interesting but uneven performance. Cryptic/impossible uninstall.

RE: unstable networks. I travel fairly frequently and occasionally have to deal with unstable networks. Sometimes networks are very strong, but drop out every few minutes. If you want to differentiate your product from the rest, I suggest finding a way to sample the signal strength over time, and indicate which networks have the most frequent drops out or instability.

startup crash with dashboard disabled

Turns out that the crash was not due to disabling Dashboard. It was a latent bug in Cisco VPN.

A tip for those who update Firefox nightlies

Nice threadjack! Firefix is a great tool for the nightly builds. I especially like it now that it automatically installs the fancy widgets.
