SuperPNG 1.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

No longer necessary?

It seems that at least as of CS2, this plug-in is obsolete. Adobe's built-in PNG format plug-in saves files smaller than SuperPNG, and it seems to include the metadata that earlier versions stripped out. It was a good run while it lasted. :) [alert admin]

DeliciousExporter 0.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Rough diamond.

It's a little rough around the edges, but that's not a big deal, expecially since it's free, and the developer notes that it's just a stopgap measure until Delicious implements their own web export (which has been announced, if not "officially"). It would be nice to be able to sort the categories differently (say, by title for movies and games, but by author/artist for books and CDs), and would also be nice to make the items clickable so someone could, say, buy them at amazon using my associate ID. There are inexplicable problems with the way it alphabetizes, seemingly inserting some random mixups here and there, and not accounting for titles starting with 'A' and 'An' (though it deals just fine with 'The,' 'le,' 'les' and 'la'). Also the information that pops up when you roll over an item is fine when you roll over the items on the left half of the screen, but on the right, they start falling off the web page, as it were. If the positioning was flipped on the right so that the info box would stay over the shelving area, that would be solved. But at least it was able to export *ALL* of my items, which DeliciWeb had a problem doing. Overall, it's a nice little app. Not perfect, but at least I can put my collection on the web again. DeliciWeb 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Not sorted, missing items.

I like that we get info on the right side for each item, and that each item is named on the shelf. That's great. Very pretty. What's not so great is that the items are in no order that I can surmise, not even by order added (yes, this is with 'Sort Alphabetcally' checked in the Prefs). It also missed exporting a number of my most recent movie additions (anything in the past month or so) and only exported 29 of my 350+ CDs, which were also added to Delicious Library recently. I'm guessing this may indicate an error in the way it's parsing DL's XML data file (it returned an error during the export process which seemed to indicate this) However, DeliciousExporter exported all of my items successfully, so I'm sure this can be overcome. The error in question: AppleScript Error The variable ThisIsOneitem is not defined. (-2753) [alert admin]

Brain Hotel 1.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Saving works fine

I have tried saving in both Safari and Firefox on Mac OS X, as well as with the standalone Mac download version, and saving has worked fine for me in all three. Just hit "save", go about your other business, and when you come back, hit "load." Simple as that. Perhaps if you're still having saving difficulties, you should post more details so the developers can figure out what's happening. The only case of not loading I have seen was pure operator error - they didn't know to click "load" to restore the game. [alert admin]

Brain Hotel 1.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Really fun!

Full disclosure: I beta tested this game, and I know the developer personally. That said, this really is a great little adventure game in the vein of the old LucasArts games. Great for a couple of hours of old school fun. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Ticker still needs work.

I love all the new improvements in searching, downloading and checking for updates for your apps... but the Ticker appearance is still a sore sticking point for me. It still won't provide an appearance akin to the old ticker in 2.x., the main problem being the transparency. I want to be able to see easily readable, solid text, on a (semi-)transparent background. As it stands now, when I increase the transparency of the window, the entire window gets see-through, text and all. Providing either an option for non-transparent text, or a separate variable transparency for the text, would go miles toward making the Ticker usable again. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro X 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Fails to Satisfy

This new version almost totally negates what great things there were with the 2.x versions. For the 3.0 update, they note "Implemented in Cocoa, making many user interface enhancements possible," and I wish to the gods that they would follow up on this potential.

The Ticker is the main reason I use the VTPro app, and it is totally proken in this revision. Half the time, it doesn't connect for updates at all, the rest of the time, the user interface problems detract from the experience. It used to be that I could read the ticker list over a translucent background, letting my desktop picture show through. Now, there is a transparency slider, but the entire window fades away-- the scroll bar, the title bar, the background, and even the text, which makes it near impossible to read. all one has to do is look at the transparency settings in the Terminal app (or, indeed, v.2.x of VTPro) to see how to do this right.

On top of these problems, there no longer seems to be a way to set VTPro to be a startup item, and only show the ticker. Every time I restart my Mac, I have to go over and close the "Main" window. Granted, the ability to download directly and queue downloads from within the VTPro app are nice pluses, but the minuses in regards to the Ticker make this nearly useless to me. I'm going to have to go back to v.2.x for now, until this situation improves.

VersionTracker Pro X 3.0b12 (Mac OS X)

Ugly Ticker

Ticker seems to work fine for me, but is there any way to go back to the previous transparent ticker? I see that this one has user-adjustable colours, but it doesn't look nearly as elegant over my desktop as the old transparent one did. How can I re-enable that? Thanks. [alert admin]

I can name one...

Yeah, except Gumby doesn't actually read some MPEG-2 files, like from a TiVo, so it's pretty useless for trying to remove commercials in that case.
