Widget, The World Watcher 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Why?

As a developer of widgets and other software, I acutely understand the dangers of errant software. In order for a widget to be errant, it must be able to execute undesirable code. In order to run such code, specific options must be specified to be turned on. Options such as: Allow Command line, Allow external network connection, Allow Plug-ins for widgets, etc. This is all documented in the Dashboard developer section at http://developer.apple.com.

The problem I have with this widget is that if any of these options are turned on, Dashboard will ask you if you want to run/install the plug-in. This would inform you of possible errent widgets.

The other thing is that this seems like it should be a System preference instead of a widget. A widget watching other widgets not only seems like a marketing companies dream, but is just too ironic. You need to have this widget open in the first place! You don't even show the widget nor tell anything about the size. Seems frivolous. [alert admin]

Global Consciousness 2.2 (Mac OS X)

Known problems...

The screen saver communicates with the server for messages.... not for whether it is up to date. it even says in the message that it will go away in a few days. As for the dark side not working, I just discovered that myself. This only happens on select machines. I will have a fix for it in the next two days. :D [alert admin]

First River 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)

Error addendum...

PS. Also try running an Apple Channel to make sure that Sherlock works for you. Then try a third party Channel from the "Other Channels" line item. If these don't work for you, then your Sherlock is not functioning properly [alert admin]

First River 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)

If you get an Error:

email me at javalizard at mac dot com. Include in your email a description of what happens and a screen shot of the channel. Also, if you want to give me further debugging info then you can do this:

1) start the Terminal program, found in your utilities folder within your application folder.
2) Then enter this (without the quotes): "defaults write com.apple.Sherlock SherlockDebug 1"
3) Start the Console, found in the same directory as the Terminal.
4) Then run the channel (http://www.globalconscious.com)
5) take a look at the console. there _should_ be text from First River.
6) Send that to me and I'll be able to diagnose what went wrong.

I will ask for the console information if the screen shot doesn't give away the bug. AKA. you might as well follow the steps. It'll take less than 2 minutes and it will pin point the bug to the function. We can work it out from there. [alert admin]

Global Consciousness Stream 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Aims, ethics, and objectivity...

These are good questions to ask.

The aim of this application is only to data mine the vast number of messages within the GC database. This Channel is purely for coolness factor. I did this for GC because I've been playing around with Sherlock Channels and thought it would be an interesting use of the technology.

The ethics of running a service like this, well, I stick to my guns. Any registration info is NOT shared. The security is excellent. I don't know about you, but I have dedicated a serious portion of my life to making GC work. I haven't gotten paid a dime for it. It is for the love of people and technology.

The messages that people post are of their own design. There is no censorship. I am sure they have their own agendas with purely non-journalistic subjective view points. That's the beauty of it. Everyone gets heard. It is a point of sharing and commonality.

Individuals want to be connected. This is another way, however oblique anyone construes it. [alert admin]

First River 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Take a few second...

If First River doesn't work, please do not RUSH OVER here to post negative feedback. email and tell me. Telling others that it doesn't work is not doing justice to the majority. It is a sad fact that the mojority doesn't post some positive comments. [alert admin]

First River 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Start up takes a few seconds...

Try giving it a few seconds after the channel loads while it connects to the server for the latest search information. The spinning should be active in your cart. When it stops everything is loaded. [alert admin]

Global Consciousness Stream 1.0 (Mac OS X)

These are NOT issues...

This software does not have access to your email nor your email account. This program does not spam, spim, nor spat. The source code is freely available for all to look at. That is the nature of Sherlock programs. the Javascript is sent to Sherlock in real time, without any downloads.

The Sherlock program is SUPPOSED to open. This is a Sherlock plug-in does. The "scary warning" is the warning that Apple displays for all non-Apple Sherlock Channels: "This is a non-Apple channel."

Lastly, this is a Sherlock Channel. There is nothing to download! Sherlock opens the application through URLs. The "download" button sends the channel URL to Sherlock, and it opens it (with such a benign warning as: "This is a non-Apple Channel").

Please do not be put off by comments that display a lack of knowledge of what Sherlock is and does. From the source code you'll find that there is nothing scary about this program. It just does what is described.

Phaser AU 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Great Tool

This is a fairly useful, vanilla phaser. There isn't much extra. I wanted to be able to control the weep itself, but this is just an effect by itself. Not bad not bad. If you have logic, stick with the phaser built into that. otherwise, get this! [alert admin]

Balls And Boxes 1.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Blah

Works ok. The cubes roll like balls on the floor. Shadows are a MUST in this environment so we can tell how far off the ground each object is! There are no shadows.... ugh. I got this message after shutting moving the mouse. Can someone please explain what this developer is talking about?????

Global Consciousness Messaging is not the Global Consciousness Project. The GCM is from my website <a href="http://djbradanderson.com/global/ ">http://djbradanderson.com/global/</a> while the GCP is on <a href="http://noosphere.princeton.edu/">http://noosphere.princeton.edu/</a>. I wrote both yes and they are unrelated. To read about the GCP i suggest you go to their website. This widget uses their data.

WTF?

This widget morphs slowly over the course of 15 minutes. The color is based upon how strong the supposed coherence is within the Global Consciousness.
