PDF Browser Plugin 2.3.1 (Mac OS X)
I have used the PDF Browser Plugin for years and it has been a lifesaver. Even now, when Safari does a much better job at handling PDFs the PDF Browser Plugin in still a must. In the past Safari was unable to follow the hyperlinks within a PDF document making it unusable for an essential online reference that is used in my workplace. Now Safari can handle the hyperlinks on many pages but hangs when trying to scroll across multiple pages and fails to display the left-sided navigation pane. The PDF browser plugin, as always, handles these items with ease. It takes new users awhile to get used to using the special icon bar that the browser uses to handle the PDFs for saving and printing, rather than using Safari's menus. However it does its job magnificently and has been an essential addition for me. [alert admin]

Safari Icon Manager 1.1 (Mac OS X)
Not compatible with Safari 3.0+
From the developer's website: "Safari Icon Manager is not currently compatible with the Safari 3.0 beta. The icon cache has been entirely redesigned in Safari 3.0, so I need some time to get Safari Icon Manager working with the new format." That's too bad. This looks like a great little tool. Snapz Pro X 2.1.2 (Mac OS X)
Beware, the $29 version of this product is crippled and only performs static screen capture. It offers little over the built-in screen capture and Preview programs in Mac OS X. The developer's website was slow to load for me and showed me only the link for the $29 version. Only if you wait a minute does the more expensive video capture link appear Giving the impression that there is only one product. [alert admin]

Error Codes 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Small and fast. This tiny app does what it promises. Allows you to look up an error code, either by the code number or by the code text and gives a short explanation. Widget smidget. This is not something I'm going to be using every day so I don't need it cluttering up my widget dashboard. [alert admin]

EndNote X1 (Mac OS X)
I have used EndNote for years, but hadn't upgraded my version since v.6 which I considered to be the first stable Mac OS X release. I downloaded the upgrade through the DigitalRiver link at EndNote's website without trouble. The software accepted my old (v.6) serial number as proof of prior ownership. I followed the instructions for installation which basically was to trash the old application and to drag the new one to the Applications folder. The application converted my old format library to a new version without trouble. However it soon became apparent that the program had glitches. For example opening a reference gave a ""Service Error: Generic". I contacted customer service via the website and they sent me an automated reply. An actual response came 2 days later with a link to their website detailing how to remove a corrupt preferences folder. They hit the nail on the head as this seems to have cured the problems. From a superficial standpoint the GUI does not seem to be hugely different. The library view is not as compact but the font size can be reduced in the application preferences. EndNote has fixed the old problem of an immovable toolbar that used to float over the old (v.6) application windows and would often prevent the user from being able to click and drag a window to a new location. Instead each window now has its own set of big goofy looking icons along the top of each window. The current version has two new features that are an obvious improvement. One is the ability to organize references into groups in a left side bar. The lack of ability to organize a library in the past meant that I had a dozen various ad hoc libraries scattered around my hard drive. The second new feature is the ability to attach PDFs. This means that EndNote can be used to keep track of journal articles and quickly linking to them for reading. For this purpose, it is not as good as the (much nice looking) Papers application (http://mekentosj.com), because no preview of the PDF is displayed in the library window. The latter application, however, will not provide endnotes to a manuscript. I tried out two connection filters that I commonly use, PubMed and Ovid. They both connected to the online databases without problems but neither of them imported the journal name. This means that that imported citations are not usable in a manuscript. This should be fixable if I can figure out the correct changes to make to the import filters. [alert admin]

Cisco VPN Client 4.9.00.0050 (Mac OS X)
I've used version 4.9.00 (0050) for over a year and (compared to previous versions) it seems fairly stable. My only problem is that I often have to try to login twice before I can connect to my instutional VPN server. I'm a little hesitant to ask for an update since some prior updates had problems. The product description doesn't mention what is new in this update. Does anyone know? [alert admin]

Google Earth 3.1.0617.0 (Mac OS X)
I've installed Google Earth on two different Macs a Powerbook G4 and an iMac G5 both running Mac OS X v.10.4.5. In both cases the application crashes immediately when launching. A window briefly flahses to the screen, and then disappears. Are others having this trouble too? [alert admin]

Palm Desktop 4.2.1revD (Mac OS X)
I didn't have any trouble installing Palm Desktop nor did it create permissions problems. I agree that all of the components are dated. I have long since moved on from the palm components and I keep this around only for the iSync component. Apple's iCal and Address Book pretty much take care of everything else. I do miss the nice skins that Claris' (and by inheritance - Palm Desktop's) old calendar had, the ability to put contacts in more than one category, and the ability to sort and filter contacts by different criteria. The Claris address book could even launch Applescripts. Why hasn't Apple brought that back? [alert admin]

Apple iPhoto 5.0.3 (Mac OS X)
I've used iPhoto since its initial release both at home and at work as my primary photo library. So far I haven't encountered problems and I have found it to be remarkably stable. However hard drives and software are corruptable so it behooves the user to make use of iPhotos "Burn Disk" command which is specifically designed to archive a iPhoto Library to a CD or DVD. A good time to do this is before and after major system or iPhoto software upgrades. Relaunching iPhoto after a version upgrade leads to a warning that the Library needs to be upgraded as well and will no longer be usable by the older software. I've never had problems with this upgrade process but it nice to have peace of mind. The raw photos are stored in iPhoto in a folder structure that is organized by date and the images are unmodified so they can always be retrieved manually. I have found this easy to interface with other programs, namely Filemaker Pro. In this way it is easy to view selected photos in a relational database without having to copy or import the photos. The photo editing features have gotten much more sophisticated and it is usually not necessary to use Photoshop to make minor adustments. iPhoto does a great job of sharing selected photos on an a local intranet. Oddly enough, it does not have a builtin feature allowing Users on a single computer to share a common library. This can be achieved by moving the iPhoto Library to the Shared user folder and placing an alias to the iPhoto Library in each users Picture folder. There is a snag, however. Photos placed in iPhoto with a new date will only be changeable by the User who imported them. This is because new folders are created with Read only permission for other users. Someone might know how to change this default behavior of the Shared user directory but my solution has been to periodically run an applescript which makes all of the iPhoto Library subfolders both Read and Writable. In comparison I've tried out the Photo organizing software that is comes with Nikon cameras (Nikon View) and Photoshop. I found both of them very clunky, slow, non-intuitive or PC-like interfaces. The first few generations of Nikon View were unstable and unusable, but its probably better now. My impression is that they are afterthoughts and were ported from software designed for PCs [alert admin]

I typically work with libraries that size with very little speed problems (several G4s and an iMac G5). All my Macs have 512MB RAM. You might want to check out these tips: http://chris2x.com/C600416119/E243942138/index.html

After unstuffing and opening the disk image drag the Netscape application into a new directory on your desktop. Then drag this directory to your application folder. As stated in the ReadMe document, installing into a clean directory can avoid problems with installations on top of older versions of Netscape or Mozilla. I have not found it necessary to throw out my Netscape/Mozilla preferences, but this might also help from inheriting old problems.…
