Printer Setup Repair (Panther Edition) 4.2.1 (Mac OS X)

a lifesaver

Yes, this program really does rock! I've had 2 problems printing to my Epson C86, and PSR fixed both of them! 1) Printing slowed to a crawl for no apparent reason. 2) Printing jobs were always "Stopped" for no apparent reason. Mashing a few buttons in the PSR GUI got me going again both times! Thanks Fixamac! [alert admin]

Apple AirPort Extreme Driver 3.4.3 (Mac OS X)

improved my b performance

I'm running old-school hardware: TiBook 400 & original Graphite Base Station, so my network is strictly 802.11b. The only troublesome spot in the house before is no problem at all now! I get at least 2 bars everywhere now, whereas before I'd get 1 to 0 in our kitchen. Gee, and I was thinking I might have to add an AirPort Express to extend the range! This update just saved me $130! Although I wonder what took so long? Back up your system first, but it definitely worked well for me.... [alert admin]

Combine PDFs 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Almost perfect...

Very nice work here, esp for free! I needed it to combine multiple jpgs & pdfs into a single PDF that I could fax all in one shot instead of having to send multiple faxes. The only nits I have are: 1) Some kind of progress indication would be nice. 2) Should be able to disable the autolaunch of Preview upon completion. I prefer to use the much faster PDFViewCM (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/mac/21004) to check the results. 3) I tried to combine several JPG files (8.5"x11", 200 ppi) and a couple of PDF files (8.5"x11", 300 ppi) into one PDF, and the scaling wasn't quite right. I ended up making 2 PDFs instead of one giant one. Overall, very very good though! (Esp considering the price. :) [alert admin]

Chicken of the VNC 1.3.6 (Mac OS X)

the best viewer I could find...

I just got done "taste-testing" all the OS X VNC viewer (client) apps I could find, and this one gets my vote. VNCThing and VNCDimension seemed very nice also, but there's no way to get rid of the scrollbars in those viewers. I have my VNC server (on Solaris) set up so that it fits exactly on my Mac screen in "normal" (non-fullscreen) mode. Hence, no need for scrollbars. If I don't need them, I don't want to see them. I like the fact that COTVNC is hosted on sf.net. This implies (but doesn't guarantee :) that the app will be supported in the future. I don't like the way buttons 2 and 3 are emulated in COTVNC, but I'll deal with it. :) I don't like that Ctrl-Tab doesn't get sent through to the server, but I'll deal with it. I like fullscreen mode for when I need to connect to a server which has dimensions that are larger than my Mac's display. COTVNC seems to be as responsive as the other 2 I mentioned above. And I like the price. [alert admin]

Chicken of the VNC 1.3.6 (Mac OS X)

play with the settings, part 2

A seemingly better way to get rid of the "ZlibHex unknown subencoding" errors is to change the RFB-Pixelformat in your profile to 8-bit. This way, you can leave on the ZRLE option, and get the performance improvements that come with it. I found this info by perusing the bug tracking page for the COTVNC development site.... Chicken of the VNC 1.3.6 (Mac OS X)

play with the settings

I was getting the "ZlibHex unkown subencoding 49 encountered" errors as well, but if you edit the profile you're using to connect, and turn off ZRLE encoding, maybe that will remedy the problem. It did for me anyway. I wouldn't have bothered trying to figure this out, but this does seem like the most responsive and "nice" VNC client out of the 3 or 4 that I tried. The fact that it's open source gives me confidence in its future as well. [alert admin]

great!

Takes a bit of reading to understand all the options, but I can't complain about that -- it's great to have options! Both the app and the concept work wonderfully. If the spambots ever start harvesting encoded addresses, then it'll be time for a new solution. But today, this is the best way to handle them, with the least amount of effort. [alert admin]

PhotoInfo 1.03 (Mac OS X)

file date / time modification broken

Several issues here... I was hoping I could use this app to do just one thing: change the timestamp on the JPEG file to match the date and time found in the EXIF header. But alas, it couldn't do it. :( The preferences item to set the "File Date and Time" affects only the EXIF field, "File Date and Time," *not* the actual file's timestamp. Better documentation would eliminate confusion on this topic. Even if updating the "File Date and Time" tag was what I wanted, there's no easy way to do the modification. The app won't do anything to the file unless you tell it to modify either the file name or EXIF "Image Date and Time." I don't want to change either one! If I nudge the time up by 1 second, then it works. The user should be able to do batch transformations by just dragging a folder onto the app's icon, versus launching the app, selecting File -> Batch Change... The Batch Change control pane promises some nice features, but a glaring omission is the ability to check/uncheck all by clicking on the column header or something. If I open a folder with 100 images in it, and don't want to touch their filenames, I'd like to have an easy way to unselect the "Change File Name" box for each image. The fact that it shows you the changes it's about to make helps out here, but it would be nice to just know that things won't be updated unless you want them to be. Great concept though! I'll update my review if these issues are resolved. [alert admin]

wow

How did they pack this much functionality into an app that weighs in at just 1.8 MB? These guys deserve, like, an award or something. [alert admin]

Unable to Update Program

You have to have 3.x installed in order to use any of the 3.x updates.... 3.0 is a paid upgrade.

Work well with 10.2.6 for me

I don't understand this -- you can select multiple images for QuickImageCM to work with. When I want to add icons to a folder full of JPG files, I do a Cmd-A in the finder, and then tell QuickImageCM to create icons. To each his own!

Severe problems found.

Weird. Thanks for the info, Hiram. I'll make sure that I've got a fresh system backup before I install. The only time I've seen random preferences get hosed is when I maxed out my HD, so that's why I mentioned it. :(

Bad idea

This is the first legitimate argument I have seen in opposition of challenge-response systems. All the others can be worked around if the user is cognizant of the risks. This is a tough one though, Wincent.

All that said though, I still think this is a great idea for kids' email accounts. I can deal with the occasional spam message that slips through the filters, but I don't want my little ones to.

Nice!

SleepLess handles just the disable-sleep part of the equation, if that's all you need. And it's a menubar thing, so no dock space wasted. FYI...
