VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)

No function left...

This software has gotten progressively worse over the years. Early versions wouldn't save my preferences, later versions suffered from unexpected quits, and now, the software fails to fulfill its primary function- it can't even connect to the internet to check if my versions are up to date. Until this software receives serious attention, I recommend looking elsewhere. [alert admin]

Freefall 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Discounted introductory price for new licenses only!

I can understand offering a discount to help introduce a new version, but why limit it to new licenses only? What about the loyal users who already have a license? Where's the love? I'd recommend the app, but under these circumstances, I won't recommend the developers. [alert admin]

Floating Icons 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Not as good as competitor is/was

Very sluggish on my PB G4 1.5GHz, and not worth keeping. There was a similar screensaver available from http://www.ittpoi.com, but it hasn't been updated since the initial release back in 2003 (for 10.2). I'll have to test it to see what happens in 10.4.4.... [alert admin]

SlothCam 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Problem with favorite cam

Can anyone (preferably the author) tell me why the following site has stopped displaying via this widget? It worked fine with v1.1: http://www.geonet.org.nz/images/whiteis.jpg Are there certain URL requirements for this to work? Thanks! [alert admin]

DD Tournament Poker 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Not bad for a single-variant poker sim

I found this for $20 at Best Buy, so don't be fooled by the $29 price listed here. Pleasantly surprised to see that it's a cross-paltform app. It does its job fairly well, and is good practice for anyone trying to catch up with the TX Hold'em craze. If you're looking for variety though, iPoker is highly recommended. [alert admin]

TranCiph 1.0 (Mac OS X)

I'd buy that for a dollar...

Cool little app. I especially liked the vertical progress bar- nice to see a little variety every now and then. Suggestions for the future: 1) ROT-13 (guess I could do this myself by editing the library) 2) Make it available from the Services menu (make it easier to convert email to morse or binary to piss off mail snoops...) iPoker 3.0.9 (Mac OS X)

re: "crezner"

I always find elitism to be especially ironic when the topic is a computer game! iPoker is a perfectly good instructional tool for anyone who wants to learn new variations ("shipwreck" was very well received by my poker buddies), or see how the odds are affected by rule changes. I've found the preparation to be very helpful in advance of live games. So crez- "Lighten up, Francis." [alert admin]

Update or not?

Nothing like 3 updates in a week to help shake one's confidence in an app, but I digress... I went to the develper's site- they link to v2.3.6 as the download for pre-Leopard versions of OS X. That's the version I'll be sticking with until further notice. (Being that there's a variety of apps that duplicate the functionality of MacPilot, give or take a few obscure settings, one can always switch to a free alternative like Onyx…

Nostalgia...

Could you elaborate a bit on the beta 2 version? I have a family member who's still on AOL, much to my chagrin, and I told her to hold off on this version until it's less buggy than the current 10.3 (or whatever) version that's available for Macs. Is it worth trying yet, or should we wait another version or two? Thanks!

AOL ?

I made the mistake of recommending it to my Mom a number of years ago, 'cause she was new to the computer world. Bad idea- it's too slow and buggy (at least for the last 5-6 years...) Best to start newbies off with something that works, so that they don't call up and ask why their computer is not working/so slow every other day...

I want iTunes Light (no iPhone)

Excellent idea. Why should we all have to subject ourselves to potential new bugs while Apple fiddles around with features that only apply to a subset of the product line? Besides- nothing <i>lowers</i> my faith in a software product more than bursts of several updates in short order. It would be great if VT would post the average patches/month or patches/week for the apps listed here, to make it easier to tell which developers tend to…

Longevity?

I've been using Stuffit for 18 years. It's gone from shareware to commercial, survived the PPC transition, survived the OSX transition, survived the Intel transition, and survived 2 further commercial acquisitions. It's also grown from a Mac-only to a cross-platform program. SmithMicro (the latest owner) is now creating "Stuffit"-branded solutions for digital cameras and mobile phones. All in all, I'm pretty confident that the format will be around for a while longer. Of course, you may…

The claim is not true

Thanks for the tip! Nothing against freeware developers, but I'll always choose a built-in feature over a 3rd-party applescript.

Re: Have not tried....

You must have tried the game before, and there's still a license file somewhere on your system. Check both /Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Preferences (there may be copies in both places). If you toss that file, it might reset the trial timer. Even if it doesn't, EVN is a great game, and worth the $30. I've been playing for years. Keep in mind- there are a number of major storylines, and the plug-ins on the Ambrosiasw.com site include…

Conflict with recent Security Update?

No changes in program behavior since I installed the security update (iBook G3/800, 10.3.3) If the weather report at you location refuses to update, maybe it has something to do with your connection to the Internet... I'd also recommend running Cache Out X
