EMS PostgreSQL Manager Professional 2.8 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
OK... I haven't been using this software long, but my impressions so far are extremely favourable. It lets you control pretty well every aspect of your PostgreSQL installations, has a polished interface and is pretty easy to use. I would so it was useful for beginners with PostgreSQL as much as those who've used it for a long time. Sometimes the interface is a little confusing, but at least it's pretty consistent, so once you get used to certain button placements, it's pretty easy to get on with. The $295 price tag for this package, plus a bunch of other useful tools, including the exceptionally useful PostgreSQL Comparer makes this pretty good value for money. To be honest, it probably paid for itself in the first day or so in time savings, especially with PostgreSQL Comparer. It's a same it only works on Windows/Linux a I could well do with this application on the Mac, where I do most of my PostgreSQL development, however, I have to use a PC as well as a Mac anyway, and switching my KVM over to my Windows box to get this level of productivity is not a problem for me. The HTML report is also very useful when working with a team of developer who are not all completely familiar with the database we're working with. I still haven't use half the features of this software, but I'm extremely happen with those I have. This is definitely worth checking out!!! [alert admin]

This software seems very unintuative and not very powerful. I can't actually see why they say 'power tools for postgreSQL' as the strap line as it just doesn't seem to do anything. And $65... per platform? Are they joking? For $89 you can get Aqua Data Studio for any platform and get a really decent bit of software which does a load more than this feeble application will do and works with lots of other databases besides PostgreSQL, but works extremely well with PostgreSQL all the same (better than pgEdit). If you need a decent tool for PostgreSQL on the Mac, Aqua Data Studio is pretty well all you need, has fantastic support and is very good value for money. pgEdit on the other hand is unintuitive, seriously lacking a good feature set and is over priced. Fantastic Tool, Amazing Support ![]()

I've been using this tool for a while with PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server and mySQL and it works great with all of them. Also, the developer is extremely responsive to support requests and some of the minor bug reports I've submitted. In fact, I would go as far to say that the support I've received so far goes beyond the call of duty for software which only costs $69 for commercial use. This is NOT free software, unless you're in education or are just using it for learning purposes, but it's not restricted, so you can potentially use it for free in a commercial environment, but you'd be breaking the licencing agreement and doing nothing to support the development of such great software. To be honest though, for $69 it more than worth the money. On the Mac there is no better tool. SQLBoss is useless rubbish by comparison. If you only need to work with mySQL, then CocoaMySQL is probably slightly better from an ease of use point of view, but then I still use this tool in combination as for an aid to writing and testing your SQL statements, it's way better. If you browse the support mailing list archives you can get hold the URLs of some of the latest sub-releases which add some fantastic additional features and better performance over the standard version 3.5 download, so I can only imagine that the next version will be even better and is covered by the licence fee. If only all developers could produce such great cross-platform Java-based applications as this and support them so well. The fact that it supports so many databases is fantastic, but the fact that it supports them in such a way as to provide proper support for each one, rather than generic JDBC functionality makes it more than worth the entrance fee. It's very stable, fast and aids in productivity immensely, and on the Mac, I don't think I've used a better SQL tool. It works great on Windows too! Aquafold... you ROCK! I love Aqua Data Studio. SQLBoss Developer 1.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
How did it get such a high score?
This software is horrible. If you need to work with PostgreSQL I suggest getting Aqua Data Studio instead. If you need to work with mySQL, get CocoaMySQL instead. I didn't waste any time testing it with anything else. The interface and lack of features put me off going any further. I just can't understand why it's won any awards. [alert admin]

Terrible New Name... Great Product ![]()

We've been using this product for pair programming for a while and it's fantastic. Once we get our iChat AV set up we'll be able to do it remotely even easier. Just please rename it again... this new name is really bad. Some others have made some good suggestions. Personally, I thought quince would be a good name seeing as we use it for pair programming and a quince is a type of pear. [alert admin]

As others have said... a good reason to use Sherlock. I've always wondered what sherlock was for, but Fraser IT seemed to have found a good, useful and cool use for it which works great! The fact that it's free is just a bonus! Keep up the good work! [alert admin]

You can do this... just right-click the table in the browser... choose 'Script SELECT' and ADS creates the query for you... no typing required. Use 'Execute Edit' to be able to modify rows in the table without having to write updates, but at the same you can also see the SQL generated to do the update if you want to cut'n'paste it into your code or something.
