FStream 1.4.2 (Mac OS X)
Super-good program for listening to radio streams. All of the necessary features, non of the uneccesary ones, and very good at connecting to multiple streams. If it could parse realaudio it would be perfect, but overall it's much better for radio than, say, VLC, which has an impossibly clunky media library and tends to crash. [alert admin]

RealPlayer 11.0.1 build 949 (Mac OS X)
Despite Realplayer's bad reputation, it has mostly been an ok application for the Mac--and a necessary one, if you would like to listen to the BBC or a lot of other realaudio-only radio streams. The final builds of Realplayer 10 were basically perfect, with the exception that they wouldn't play Windows Media streams. It's nice that Realplayer 11 does that, but unfortunately, it suffers from a bunch of amateurish problems. The primary one is the inability to connect to a number of standard radio streams, mostly in playlist format. Realplayer 10 connected to all of these streams just fine, but Realplayer 11 has (so far) been a big step backward. Moreover, Real has failed to correct these basic problems over many updates, and pretty much every basic media player can resolve those addresses. So, I've started using FStream, and only drag out Real when I want to listen to BBC Radio 4. [alert admin]

ShapeShifter 2.5 (Mac OS X)
For those running it on 10.4.11, it crashes all of the pre-release versions of Firefox 3 -- it would be really great to have a fix for this. I'm sure that Unsanity is putting its efforts into creating a 10.5 version, but a lot of us are still running Shapeshifter on 10.4, and it's not like Firefox is a marginal program. [alert admin]

7zX 1.6.7 (Mac OS X)
I've only used the latest version, but I think it's quite good. 7zx is a slow compression method, but creates extremely small files--the speed isn't related to the program, per se. Additionally, this program has useful mac options, like preserving resource forks and removing invisible mac files. It would be nice to not have to drag it onto the icon--I'm not sure why this is necessary, but a small gripe. Thumbs up. [alert admin]

TarPit 1.4 (Mac OS X)
I like Tarpit a lot, especially its control of compression, extensions, and-yes-resource forks. Versions above 1.2 crash on my 10.3.9 system, though. [alert admin]

RealPlayer 11 build 631 (Mac OS X)
problem with streaming .pls links
Realplayer is a needed application for any mac user who regularly listens to a lot of internet radio (the BBC is only reliably available in real format, for one), so I was distressed to find that a lot of my playlist links didn't work in the latest version. Instead of resolving into a stream, they bring up a "playlist" window breaking down the .pls stream into unplayable links. Any solution for this? [alert admin]
