G-Force 3.7.5 (Mac OS X)
Great but verging on a rip-off ![]()

I bought the Platinum Version in April 06, when it was at v3.5.1, as a superior alternative to the default iTunes visualiser. It's an enjoyable addition, and I particularly liked the ability to set up "sprites" (user-defined grayscale images that appear ghosted through the various visualisations. Evidently I must have been having a good day in April 07 when I got the invitation to renew my license, as I thought what the heck, it's "only" 15 bucks. Come April 08, when like many people I expect, I am paying much closer attention to a wide range of financial commitments, the decision was a no-brainer: not this time, buddy! My current (and final) version stands at 3.7.5, so paying the full fee upfront, plus one year's "subscription" has gotten me 0.2.4 worth of "upgrades". Wow! Even Adobe would draw the line (I hope) at charging for that incremental level of "development". The problem is compounded because AFAIK the ongoing development generally addresses bugfixes, and issues introduced by new hardware and OS updates, and rarely seems to add any new features. And my sprites were no longer recognised a couple of points back, due to a bug, but guess what, if I hand over another 15 bucks, I can get version 8.0 in which that bug has finally been addressed ;-)) Basically, it's one thing to pay continuous upgrade fees for say, a productivity app, which has to develop new features to keep up with evolving standards etc, but we're talking a glitzy screensaver here! I think I'm gonna hold off G-Force now until version X or so, by which time who knows, maybe it'll throw 3D globules of plasma across my living-room... [alert admin]

Personal Trader 3.5 beta 5 (Mac OS X)
An application like this is long overdue for would-be investors who have the misfortune to live outside the US. The interface looks clean and simple, however, the performance on my Intel iMac is slow, with brief periods of unresponsiveness following each action...a bit like those early Java-based apps. Unfortunately, whilst the developer has obviously gone to great lengths to include a wide range of international stocks, my personal predilection, namely ETFs traded on the LSE are not included, despite many regular investment trusts appearing, so the app as it stands is not too much use to me. But I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it...great concept! [alert admin]

gMap 0.5 (Mac OS X)
There you go, prompt reply and solution from developer. Excellent work! Much faster than launching GoogleEarth and having it "fly" to a destination. [alert admin]

gMap 0.4 (Mac OS X)
How do you set the "home address" ? No documentation is available, and despite finding the map of my area (in UK), there's no "save as default" option or any other control. But the next time I call up Dashboard, it's reverted to downtown Manhattan... ;-( Apart from that, seems fast and slick, with excellent functionality [alert admin]

Canon CanoScan Toolbox 4.9.3.3 (Mac OS X)
LiDE 35 with Intel iMac: Happy Discovery!
This isn't strictly relevant to the LiDE 25, but an advanced search of VT returns no updates for the LiDE 35, and entering "Canon" brings up a messy heap of confusing updates, so here seems as good as a place as any, and the "discovery" may be useful to other Canon scanner users... As a UK user, I've been deeply disappointed to have a barely functional LiDE 35 hooked up to my Intel iMac, especially as Canon UK site's most recent drivers date from 2003. On a whim, I checked the Canon US site, and found a suite of updated, Intel-friendly software from June 2007. This installed with no problems, and even caused the one-touch buttons to work again, which I certainly didn't expect. I encountered a similar situation with a Samsung printer a few years ago too, so it might pay to keep an internationalist outlook when looking for new drivers... [alert admin]

ScreenRecycler 1.00RC1 build 876 (Mac OS X)
...But given it is clearly beta software (with built-in expiry) is it really necessary to have an annoying "You are in trial mode! Buy now?" pop-up every 20 minutes, which goes on to quit the app if not acknowledged? Thus far the app has been working very well on my iMac CD & Ti667 PB, but I had barely finished organising my Photoshop palettes when it quit! I can understand the pop-up will be (from the developer's point at least) a key feature of the finished app, but the general quid pro quo for exposing one's machine to all the potentially fatal effects of beta-testing is surely "full functionality" where it exists, as I'm pleased to say that it does in my case at least. krank 0.6 (Mac OS X)
...but it becomes sluggish and unplayable at Level 11 on my G4 667 PowerBook. I realise there's lots of realistic motion simulation occurring by this level, and I expect this old thing can no longer handle it. Looking forward to continuing on my Intel iMac when I get home, after travelling. It's a brilliant idea, very well implemented. And thanks so much for making it freely available ;-) [alert admin]

Boinx FotoMagico 1.8.1 (Mac OS X)
I got FotoMagico as part of the MacHeist bundle and this has subsequently proved to be an outstanding bargain. It is a far superior alternative to iMovie for producing dynamic, high-res slideshows, with full and intuitive control of pan & zoom effects. All transitions are fully and smoothly rendered, which sometimes does not occur with eg. iPhoto or Keynote. Fast, simple to use from the get go, and amazingly professional looking results. It also appears very stable on my iMac CD: working for over 4 hours with 2GB of HD TIFF files was absolutely fine. My only quibble would be with the app's name: with no prior experience of it, it sounds like some kind of POS photo-editor you'd find bundled with a cheap Windows scanner! Yes, it does perform "magic" with photos, but the name hardly matches the app in terms of power & slickness. Just an observation for anyone harbouring similar thoughts ;-) [alert admin]

MailSteward 7.6.3 (Mac OS X)
I emailed the developer regarding a problem I was experiencing with the dates of certain emails (eg. 1904 appearing instead of 2004) and he replied within the hour, and attached an updated version of the app! For the functionality this program offers, and the speed with which it performs (I have a 16000+ message database, 2.7 GB) I am very happy. Mail app is also running much better now I've cleaned it out. [alert admin]

iBank 2.1.5 (Mac OS X)
Just downloaded the demo. Interface looks slick and "professional"...behaviour however is bizarre. Entered a simple balance, and three scheduled monthly bill payments. In the overview, two of the bills were not shown, and the third had been duplicated twice. Saved, quit, relaunched. Now my overview shows 2 of the 3 bills, and has been repopulated with 10 additional "empty transactions" for today's date. I have a feeling I would get a better financial summary by labelling white mice with numbers 0-9, putting them in a maze, and seeing which numbers escaped first. Sorry, maybe just me, but I doubt it. Running 10.4.7 on CoreDuo iMac, a well-maintained and stable system, so far... Advertised features and price seem attractive, but with the current implementation, definitely 1* overall. [alert admin]

With iMac CD, 10.4.10.1.1 no problems here. Installed updates via SU, repaired permissions after restart, and Office 04 and PS CS2 all run fine. Only thing is I had not installed the previous iTunes 7.3.0 update...sat that one out ;-)
