Synchronize! Pro X 4.1 (Mac OS X)
I recently posted an article featuring SyncPro X as part of my MacOS X backup strategy. Those considering SyncPro or looking for a simply OS X backup system may want to have a read: http://matt.makalumedia.com/archives/000833.html [alert admin]

PGP Desktop Home 9.0.2 (Mac OS X)
I'm fed up with both the PGP product and the organization. Apart from similar experience to those comments here, PGP 9 now won't let you select a group of files, and encrypt them all at once -- individually. It will create a .zip file containing all the selected files. Unless you've discovered a very serious bug, you'll never hear from the company's support staff. Finally, they make you jump through hoops to even download the product. Click on the above download link, and you'll have to first fill out a long form requiring all sorts of personal information (I thought PGP was about privacy?!?) in order to download the DEMO version, then you're told you'll get an email with further instructions and your temporary key. WHY IN THE WORLD do they not simply have a place where EXISTING users can go fetch the latest software?! [alert admin]

Interarchy 7.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I don't know what has changed, but I'll bet it was something organisational at Stairways. Interarchy (version 7) is now once again fantastic product, and working with the staff at Stairways is once again a pleasure. I've tried every SFTP client on the market capable of preserving modification times on SFTP transfer, and only found two that were stable enough for daily use, Vicomsoft FTP Client and Interarchy. Of the two, I much prefer Interarchy's GUI. For me, the one remaining feature would make Interarchy the *perfect* SFTP client -- smart mirrors, a la FTPeel's MagicMirror. [alert admin]

Synergy 1.0a8 (Mac OS X)
Please do NOT bring back the old music icon. :-P Those of us with 12" Powerbooks have major real estate issues with the menu bar area. The narrower the icon, the better! Thanks. [alert admin]

IntelliMerge X 3.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I use the IntelliMerge SQL product from this company. It's really a nice software application -- very usable interface, loads of features, very stable, very well thought-out and designed. Support from the company is always prompt and helpful. Everything about this company reflects top quality -- except documentation. The SQL product, like this product, has no user documentation. Bummer. [alert admin]

That's Not a Picture 2.0 (Mac OS X)
This idea (rendering an image in table cells) was introduced by somebody (can't remember who) several years ago, as a way to display an image on a web page that people couldn't steal. Its popularity lasted about a day, until somebody pointed out the fact that you can take a sceenshot of your browser window. [alert admin]

TinkerTool 3.1 (Mac OS X)
Setting Default Finder Permissions
Thanks OSXNerd. I have deselected all checkboxes in the Permissions area of TinkerTool. The Finder (after I've logged out and in) continues to assign *only* owner read/write permissions (no group r/w). What do I need to do to have Finder setting group r/w on new files and folders? TIA!! TinkerTool 3.1 (Mac OS X)
New feature text reads: "An option to modify the permission filter for the creation of new files and folders has been added for Panther. It is effective for all applications started from the graphical user interface." I had hoped that this feature would allow me to specify that new files and folders in the Finder would have group read and write permissions. From what I can tell, having installed 3.1, this feature can be used only to *prevent* certain permissions from being set, -- i.e. not specifying a default permission level (which we really, *really* need to be able to do.) Anyone know if I'm simply overlooking something in my understanding of how this new feature works? (I hope I'm mistaken!) [alert admin]

Backup Simplicity 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Nothing Wrong with Subscription Scheme
Software provides you with a *service*, and there is nothing unusual about subscribing to a service. Many of us pay Apple annually for .Mac, providing us services -- synchronisation, calendars, remote backup. We subscribe to websites, such VersionTracker. We also see products like Quicken begin to embed value-added, subscription-based services. The way I see it, this product adds a bit of value (compared to the free alternatives) via the archive function, and seems quite reasonably priced as an annual service fee for maintaining an archiving, bootable mirror. Hello Bahi -- very interesting comments. You've found evidence very much in line with my own observations. You know, the Softobe software really isn't that bad -- but crap like this leaves such a bad taste in my mouth, that I not only wouldn't consider purchasing any more of their products, but will take the time to publicly voice my strong disapproval at their efforts to abuse services like VersionTracker.
