Netscape Navigator 9.0.0.6 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Ta-Ta, Netscape

For all the newbies: Don't be taken in by the "next generation web browser" tag. Navigator is a really good browser, but AOL bought them out and has pulled the plug; so this is the last version you'll probably ever see. It's been on on my Macs for years in one iteration or another but I finally had to come to terms with reality with OSX. So now I bounce between SeaMonkey (because it has a pretty respectable built-in mail client) and Safari. But for Windows, which, by the way, I only recently began using after stumbling upon a gift laptop more-or-less), I really have to recommend Safari 3 or FireFox. Certainly I would have to suggest everyone try Navigator out were it not for its unfortunate demise. [alert admin]

Fenetres Volantes 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Maybe they were right.

This is really Koool! Yeah, maybe the orange sunshine really was laced with strychnine. But the WindowPane and the Blue-Dots were always mellow. A terrific screen-saver that might even replace Puddles. [alert admin]

Netscape X 9.0.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Seems just fine here

Netscape was my original and favorite browser way-back-when and it's nice to see the reincarnation. There haven't been any problems at all on my PPC G4 macmini running 10.4.11, and it seems fast and relevant to the times. Ford and GM have been around a long time too and nobody buys their new cars for nostalgia as far as I can tell. It pulled in all my Safari bookmarks and categories without my even asking and hasn't missed a beat yet. SeaMonkey is still my browser-of-choice because I like the mail integration but Safari (and AppleMail of course) get used a lot too just because I can I guess, and there's nothing negative to be said about them either. OSX is just fantastic IMHO. And lots of RAM is a good thing too. [alert admin]

Logitech Control Center 2.4.0 (Mac OS X)

Guess it's about time…

but it seems the most recent comments are the only ones I can remember actually saying anything positive about LCC. Good for them. I've been using Logitech mice for a long time but never had the need to try LCC (wait, I think it did work for me back in OS9, but I never even tried to upgrade after that), so have managed to avoid all the documented headaches I guess. My MX310 with 6 buttons has never caused me any grief through many iterations of OSX from 10.2 to the present 10.4.11, and I strongly suspect it's thanks to USBOverdrive. For any of you suffering any seemingly unsolvable mouse problems I highly recommend you give it a try. [alert admin]

Sonnet Crescendo/Encore 3.1 (Mac OS 9)

Whoa! Anybody there?

This is obviously a dated item but I've still got a Performa 6400 upgraded with a L2 Cache card running OS9.1 for the sake of nostalgia etc. Had a lot of weirdness with some hybrid foreign 400mhz hack for a long time then came upon Sonnet's rework. It only gets me to 350 mhz on my original 200mhz 6400 but it's been doing it flawlessly. And I don't have to reinstall RamDoubler every time I run TechTool anymore. This is a 5 star job. Thanks loads, Sonnet. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 8.1.1 (Mac OS X)

MeaCulpa (not really)

Alright already. I know I righteously panned V8.0 already but it's all cool now. I don't know how much was due to upgrading to OS 10.4.11 and how much was just on Adobe's side but I'm going to give them the nod. I think they finally got it right and I want to say Hallelujah so to speak. Every thing is working just great, and the new tools like Pan&Zoom and Loupe are really cool. I don't use this in a professional working environment but I gotta say this is really good. My petard is raised to you, Adobe, on this one. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 8.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Keep Reader 7.0.x handy…

Reader 8.1 looked really impressive for the first thirty minutes or so I spent checking it out. Things quickly went south and I had no choice but to dump it even faster than I had downloaded it via 56k. I'm pretty sure my entire disk got pretty funky and I also had to eventually do a reinstall to get things right again if my memory is correct. By the way, Schuberts PDF Browser Plugin (http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf) is an excellent alternative for anyone wishing to browse PDF's online. For everything else, Reader 7.0.5 has actually worked just fine on my G4 macMini running 10.4.10, and all the previous iterations leading up to it. I'm going to try the update to 7.0.9 just for the heck of it, and then , with no great expectations and the most serious reservations, begrudgingly load Reader 8.1.1 to see if Adobe has gotten any closer to solving earlier problems. And even then, that won't happen before I'm certain my latest system clone is fully operational. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 8.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Pretty Impressive IMHO

Usually I avoid downloading and installing adobe stuff for a while until I'm satisfied that the feedback and the bug fixes have all been accounted for. Figured I'd take a chance and try this and quite frankly maybe I'm just easily impressed. Well, let's keep in mind I've been using the stuff for twelve years now too so I've been around the blocks a couple of times. Download (of 8.0 and immediate on-line upgrade to 8.1) and install were really a piece of cake on my macmini g4/1G running OS10.4.9. Help files are extensive and the app itself seems pretty darned stable and well-configured. Only downside, and it's most likely a safeguard I suppose, is that it didn't actually replace the old version. [alert admin]

Pop-Up Zapper Lite 2.04 (Mac OS 9)

No grief here

This version seems to run fine in OS8.6 with both IE5.1.7 and Netscape 7 (I know, I know…NS7 doesn't need it, but the majority of my work is done in IE). Definitely enhances the browsing experience by doing what it's claimed to do. It's easily disabled and re-enabled at any time I choose, and I can't attribute any problems to it. Some sites obviously don't work without the pops, so the first time it happens, I just turn it off myself and reload…easy as pie. Afterwards I add the site to the list of those for which Zapper automatically turns itself off. No reason for me not to give it 5 stars. [alert admin]

Slow Mail Client

Is that really surprising? Minimum requirements show OS 10.2 as the earliest compatible system, and running any version of OS X on any G3 is unacceptably slow to the best of my own knowledge. My own G3's will never see anything beyond 9.1 and they're great at what they've been chosen to do. But OS X needs at least a G4 to deliver even a perception of satisfactory performance as far as I can…

Eureka!

No, not the vacuum cleaner by a long shot. I had pretty much given up all hope of ever getting my Zire to be anything more than a glorified little black book after reading all the negative comments (and experiencing same for myself with previous versions on earlier operating systems) about failures-to-install, hot sync problems and everything else ad nauseum. But I finally decided to make one last lunge for the life preserver and, after…
