MPlayer 2.0b8r5 (Mac OS X)
This is the wrong place for latest MPlayer
MPlayer is based on Open Source code, and two different people have developed different versions. The one here called MPlayer 2, and another version called MPlayer (version 1). The 2 versions are not connected. MPlayer 2 is no longer being developed so you need MPlayer which you can download from here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ Or to view it in Versiontracker go here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27163 (Hopefully this will be the last comment here, and everyone will go download the version still being developed). Camino 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)
Textarea typing can make it unusable
I regularly have a problem where typing into a textarea is so slow as to render the browser unusable. (In both 1.0.4 and 1.1). In 1.0.4 I get a strange flickering effect on the caret/ibeam, and in 1.1 each letter can take a second to appear. Otherwise the browser seems excellent. It is such a shame that the one flaw that I experience is serious enough to mean that the browser is unusable. [alert admin]

Azureus BitTorrent Client 2.5.0.4 (Mac OS X)
The CPU problems seem to go away with 2.5.0.4, but it's still very worthwhile to get into the command-H to hide it habit. Can half the CPU usage. [alert admin]

Azureus BitTorrent Client 2.5.0.2 (Mac OS X)
2.5.0.2 can suck the life out of the CPU - often hangs around 50 to 70%. This was not an issue with 2.5.0.0. A hint here: http://madross.com/blog/speed-up-azureus-in-os-x/ suggests simply hiding the application, and this seems to be very effective. Although, 2.5.0.0 hidden only used a few percent, 2.5.0.2 hangs around 10 - 20%. An improvement on 50% but could be better. Otherwise, Azureus is still the best BT client out there. [alert admin]

BBEdit 8.5 (Mac OS X)
Good: clippings. Bad: ugly stuff ![]()

Finally, clippings (aka glossary) is now usable. Finally, they got rid of the awful childlike 'B' although the new icon is not great. BUT, Earlier they had small yet functional icons for stuff like revealing in the finder and locking. (Some misguided souls on this thread insisted that it would be more OS X like to have big cutesy icons). Well, you got em. A 2cm long ugly pencil to lock a file no less, not independently removable (why not?), another huge icon to reveal in the finder (what was wrong with the old small one?), and a switchy icon with a T written on it (ah text preferences - far less elegant looking that then small radio one from before. The 'Text Status Display' where these are displayed is potentially a very useful and customizable area (see Transmit). Instead it's got a couple of ugly icons, and the text path which you cannot turn off. Either it should be improved or left alone! These are nitpicking things because otherwise BBEdit remains its former brilliant self. [alert admin]

SvnX 0.9.7 (Mac OS X)
This is a good start. Documentation is pretty horrible though! I wish developers would start at the beginning like: "Hey, you can import your first project by dragging and dropping!" I'm guessing over half the people who tried this app gave up on it because they didn't figure that out! I was almost one of them. Help pages would be a lot easier if they simply outlined one example. That said it does work well, and I'm going to stick with it. Bizarrely though it has text wrangler as an option for diff but no BBEdit. And in other news, tonight's big game coverage will be the Pitcairn Islands rather than Brazil. [alert admin]

1Passwd 1.3.2535 (Mac OS X)
Shareware etc. tends to fall under pricing range such as: $5 - handy little utility $10 - handy utility $20 - not overly complex but simple app. $30 - extremely powerful, useful and/or essential. I'm looking at you SuperDuper!, Path Finder, Spam Sieve Obviously, things depend on the complexity of programming the application in question, and how specialized they are. R-Name for example saves me hundreds of hours of work, but as a relatively simple app $0-$10 is a fair price. In no shape or form is 1Passwd anywhere near the complexity or usefulness of applications such as SuperDuper!, Path Finder, Spam Sieve yet has a similar price. Reduce it to $10. [alert admin]

MPlayer 2.0b8r5 (Mac OS X)
MPlayer OS X is based on an open source Linux player called MPlayer (no surprise there :-) http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ Now 2 different people have taken this code and packaged it for OS X. Those linked to from VersionTracker (who have called it MPlayer for OSX version 2, which is a cheat really) here : http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/ and another here: http://www.haque.net/software/mplayerosx/cvs/ This latest is based on the latest CVS builds from the Linux project, and so theoretically should be more up to date (although it may introduce a bug or two if the build is cutting-edge). Which of the two is better is difficult to say but the latter just looks more OS X. Only one Window opens, and it has a much better interface, so I'd recommend people to go with that. (but try both). Azureus BitTorrent Client 2.4.0.2 (Mac OS X)
If your windows won't close; app won't quit.
This is a conflict with APE manager (Window shade etc.) Go to your System Preferences and add Azureus to the Master Exclude list (with Azureus quit). Then all will be fine. Makes Azureus damn near perfect. Thanks to Kevin for pointing that out below. Thought it would come in handy as a comment. Perhaps those who gave Azureus a bad rating because of this conflict might want to redress the balance :-) [alert admin]

Clearly you don't understand the power of the software - especially the fact that it is not just a launcher. How would you for example resize and image using the dock (in about 2 seconds)? Rate the iTunes song that you are listening to <i>without leaving the application you are using</i>? Beginners tend not to like this product and of course many people stay beginners for their whole computing existence. That's OK. The Mac is scalable and suits…

PathFinder: Constantly crashes itself, and other apps
Rather than giving the application a one star rating, you should be telling this as your experience. It's clear that the problems you have are some kind of conflict that is more likely to do with another piece of software you have installed. In other words, you installed PF second, and therefore that's what you are blaming. Nobody else is reporting these problems - did you try running it on another user's login?

10.3.9 Installation BIG problem
1. Restart in Safe-Mode (hold down the shift key) 2. Install 3. Restart This can be a good idea anyway.
