XShelf 1.1.4 (Mac OS X)

WONDERFUL to have in Leopard

Been using Leopard for a few days and was constantly missing XShelf. Kudos to the developer. Send him a few $$ - at least enough for a cheap bottle of wine. [alert admin]

Cyndicate 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Help is a huge HELP!

It's buried but to get the website in the app toggle command-D in the article pane (Menu bar: Article>Show Feed Content/Linked Article). You can also select and drag a headline down into that area a la Vienna and NNW. So there's a plus: keyboard access. Still, a contextual menu item for "Show Linked Article" would be nice. Another plus, you can select multiple headlines and right-click to open them in tabs (but only in web browser). Can't do that in Vienna nor Safari. Guess I'll be playing for a while. [alert admin]

Cyndicate 1.0 (Mac OS X)

$30 for a NON-Inline browser

I got excited when I saw this. I would love an alternative to NNW (decent price but ...) besides Vienna (free). Cyndicate does do what it does and seems to do it very well (for my little evaluation time). But in this day and age, as evidenced by all the apps that do inline browsing, there is no excuse and $30 is steep for not doing it. [alert admin]

Ensemble2 0.5.4 (Mac OS X)

downloads from sites within Ensemble2

Can anyone download anything? I just get the gear spinning. Sure I can work around it but ... Also, any one complaining of the RAM hit? [alert admin]

Ensemble2 0.5.1 (Mac OS X)

It's true!

I have tried them all! Too dam many times. I've even paid for NetNewsWire. I have even tracked down the hacked Vienna that has a toolbar. But this E2 is fast, stable, & highly customizeable. It even allows for 4 panes should you have a huge screen. Even though I give it 1 star for "Poor" for no documentation, I'd give it at least 6 stars for features, so 5 stars it is. [alert admin]

SynergySacker 1.0 (Mac OS X)

simply great

As I have finally gotten around to cleaning up my files (getting their titles and tags right, getting them into iTunes permanently, etc.) I find that too often in the process Synergy will reach out and grab art I'd rather not have. This app appeared just a couple days into this process and has proved invaluable. Instead of drilling down to find the "offending" art, just with three clicks it is purged. The next time you run iTunes/Synergy, the latter just repopulates it's folders. Buy this guy a cheap bottle of wine. [alert admin]

Valet 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Another half star ...

for the speech support. I didn't pay much attention (flat-out forgot about it) but some folk like it. For them it probably means a lot more than a half star. [alert admin]

Valet 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Save your money

Between the free apps that work as well from the menu bar and keyboard, and DragThing for but $4 more, this app falls short. More, it is slow. It is clean and easy to use and visually appealling. I will keep interested as I'm a big fan of app launchers! I use DragThing, MaxMenus, Xkeys, QuickSilver, and even Launch Items a little still. [alert admin]

Hogwasher 4.3 (Mac OS X)

Just give it a chance ...

Yeah, the Help sucks, as does all Help.app based help. Earlier versions did have a manual and many have pleaded for a return. but, allow me to suggest you keep trying. The trial period is long enough. The comp.sys.mac.apps and c.s.m.comm newsgroups have many hardore Hog fans that are very helpful without USENET pissiness. There is a Cocoa version in the works. Thoth will break someday and then your only alternative is Unison (horrors!) or something like PAN. At least give the whole Subscriptions thing a try. That is HW's shining glory. [alert admin]

Hogwasher 4.3 (Mac OS X)

Best ...

Could a true Cocoa version be far away? This developer seems to have one program. WTF is keeping them from moving forward? If it's because of accommodating Classic folk, well, they haven't had an update to System 9.X and won't. They should be happy with what they have now. We who have moved on should be able to benefit from our choices. [alert admin]

Help is a huge HELP!

I just discovered the show permalink setting. This is great. The other apps I've liked that do this are buggy (Stryker) and RAM hungry (Ensemble2).

How responsive is developer?

I wish it were that simple. I checked junk folders and used other email addresses to dens from because I worried the same was happening on their end. No good. I finally found an email address of one of the developers and did get a response though it wasn't responsive to all my concerns AND he confused me with another person with the same first name, someone to whom he was responding after even a…

eh...big deal

IIRC, there's a message to the effect that you should log out before expecting to see all changes. In my experience what you desscribe has always been before logging out.

Sorry ...

True enough. But there's still the issue of menu bar space allocation. My 12" PowerBook sometimes has so little I need to invoke a nifty little app named NoMenuBar via a hotkey.
