BBC Radio Widget 3.4.1 (Mac OS X)

Nice job

Works fine for me (MacBook, Mac OS X 10.5.6). Thanks to the developer for this gift to the Mac community. [alert admin]

Mac Travel Recorder 2.4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Nice software

I've used a GPS for several years in the car and on the bike but haven't found one I like yet for my sailing canoe, so decided a simple travel recorder would be useful to track my routes. I checked out the models compatible with MTR then opted for a newer model: the Qstarz BT-Q1000P (Platinum). Luckily this works perfectly. You get a generous trial period but of course if you've already bought a new recorder and found it wasn't supported then you'd have to try and return it for a refund. I haven't tried the Qstarz Windows software within Boot Camp but MTR seems to handle every task I have tried well. The manual doesn't cover every feature but Bert provides quick responses if you post your queries on the Mountain Rose MTR forum. The software has some idiosyncrasies (such as the registration procedure) but nothing serious, and I'd like to see the price reduced. It takes some time to download all the data points onto your computer but once downloaded it is easy and quick to export to Google Earth and Google Maps to see an accurate track of where you've been. The data can also be exported to a .csv file, which can be opened by Excel, allowing data to be sorted. I like to see my peak speeds while sailing my canoe and the tracks show my tacking angles more accurately than simply relying on my compass. I haven't tried the GeoTag feature yet but imagine that would be really useful for sorting holiday photos, especially when touring. Just remember to set your camera to Universal Time (UT) so that the travel recorder and camera clocks are in sync. [alert admin]

Send SMS 2.2 (Mac OS X)

Money-saver

My mobile plan doesn't include any free messages, and Send SMS/SMS Mac's cost of 0.10 Euro per message is about a quarter of my service provider's normal charge, so this is good value for me. I bought it specifically to text a friend in the Caribbean from the UK and the first three messages all 'bounced' after a couple of days. I have my widget configured so that I receive an email confirmation once the message is sent. The 'Sent' confirmation is immediate but this is of limited use, since it then took 48 hours each time to receive notification that the messages could not be delivered. This delay is out of the control of the software developers though, as it is determined by the receiver's gateway. The developers were excellent at working through the problem and set up a special pathway for me so that on the fourth attempt I was able to successfully send messages to my friend. When successful, the 'Sent' confirmation and 'Delivered' confirmation emails are almost simultaneous. During the troubleshooting stage, I deliberately avoided using accented characters (as found in Spanish) in my messages as well as text messages over 160 characters long (Long SMS), as some mobile providers do not permit these features. I am still at the trial-and-error phase but accented characters seem to be permitted so I'll try Long SMS next. A 160-character SMS (included spaces) is quite restrictive. Overall, I'm very pleased with this app. [alert admin]

Entourage Email Archive X 2.4 (Mac OS X)

2.4 system requirements

Note: Contrary to VT info above, version 2.4 is for Mac OS X 10.4.x and Entourage 2004 only (check the Softhing site). Stick with version 2.3 for Panther and Office X. [alert admin]

why?

> they also rely on the machine being idle for the lock to appear Why would you want to lock your computer if it's NOT idle i.e. you are using it? I would like my computer to lock after a longish period of inactivity (say 2 hours), requiring password entry, while still having the screen-saver kick in after a much shorter period of inactivity (say 5 minutes), without the need to enter a password.
