Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.2 (Mac OS X)
This latest version from Microsoft Office don't have is heavy on the CPU and very buggy. Among other problems, Entourage often can't properly import data from previous versions. No fix seem to be on the horizon at MS. People are suggesting klunky workarounds, like exporting your mailboxes as mbox files, then reimporting the data in Entourage 2008. But this process is cumbersome at best and doesn't work well with some types of data, like calendar info... My advice is to steer clear of this latest version unless you really must. And if you have an old version of Office, stick to it until MS acknowledges the problem and publishes a fix... or switch to Apple's mail... [alert admin]

Apple Boot Camp 2.0 (Mac OS X)
I tried installing Windows XP using Apple Boot Camp and I get two major errors that render this program useless. Users of OSX10.5 might want to wait for a serious update from Apple, since this latest 2.1 upgrade does nothing to solve those two problems. Basicaly, when using the Bootcamp installer as is, you'll be able to install Windows, but then you'll end-up with a disk error when Windows boots, because Bootcamp does a partition and only "fakes" the proper Windows formatting. The manual says you have to format the drive in Windows instead, but it is very hard to do so (often the right setup screen doesn't show up) and if you succeed. Chances are you'll get the dreaded missing "hal.dll" file that will prevent Windows from booting anyway. And this one last bug is almost impossible to recover from, in spite of what some smart posts say in the support forums... USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF YOU DO. BACKUP EVERYTHING AND PREPARE A HUGE JAR OF COFFEE FOR YOUR LONG NIGHT AHEAD :) [alert admin]

BattleZone 0.8 (Mac OS X)
Sometimes newer isn't necessarily better :) ![]()

The DL link is dead, and the developper's site link leads to a different game that's supposedly much better. First sure it's technicaly better, but many people like to old BattleZone better for nostalgic or minimalistic. Personaly, I like my Coke Classic :) [alert admin]

Retrospect 6.1.138 (Mac OS X)
The product we all love to hate ![]()

Truth is, Retrospect does tricks other applications can only dream of. And most of the time, it does it in a very reliable manner. Yet, when we consider that this is one of those applications we rely on as an lifesaving measure. I think it should be built to be as failsafe as, say, a firetruck or an ambulance. And current versions of that application are far from this level of trustabilty and are buggy... Plus, the interface still reeks of it's old OS9 design, and so many new features are overdue or due for a major overhaul since so long, that it can turn into a rather nightmarish application. Add to this a steep multiuser licence cost and it's easy to feel that it's not entirely worth its price... [alert admin]

REALbasic 2007 r4 (Mac OS X)
Been using since version 2.x... Basic version is great for hobbyists and not too demanding programmers who need to build a simple application's prototype fast. For more serious work, you'll need the professional (and much more expensive) version, and budget for at least a few plugins like the indispensable MBS plugin that will boost the price yet some more. It is true that REALbasic has many defective features, and most unnervingly, some longstanding bugs. Yet the interface has improved quite a lot in the last versions and it seems they are finaly getting serious with making a stable and truly reliable programming tool, although I too would steer clear of version 10.5 and wait to see what they come up with 10.6. Used with the right tools by a decent programmer, REALbasic can yield surprising results and professional, truly cross platform applications. Even better, REALbasic is FUN to use and will let you build professional looking applications in just a few hours. Even version 10.5 certainly deserves more that the 2.3 stars shown here, and closer to the 3.6 out of 5 it usualy gets. [alert admin]

Sure and while you're at it, don't use the brakes on your car. They seem to be there to do the braking, but really, only the manual park lever works... What a way to encourage/force proper software development... What a way to encourage people to avoid software piracy by making them pay more than their fair share of money, so they can end-up with crappy applications and be insulted in help forums.
