cscreen 1.3 (Mac OS X)
Well, I've ordered a nice shiny new PowerMac as well as a display. Before the tower gets here, I'll have my PB and an extra display and so should have a chance to play with the second display problem. [alert admin]

TimeStat 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Hi folks, The reason you can't move TimeStat around via cmd-drag is that I'm using the public API NSStatusItem, which is the Apple approved method for 3rd party developers to provide items to put up in the menu bar. 3rd party apps that are able to be shuffled around via cmd-drag are using a private API that Apple does not support for 3rd party usage called NSMenuExtra. It is a hack and is not guaranteed to work in future versions of the OS. I've opted for future compatibility and won't be switching to NSMenuExtra until and unless it becomes a public API. I know that's a sore spot for some of you, but I think it's the appropriate thing to do under the circumstances. Regards, Lynn Pye [alert admin]

QTConvert 1.4 (Mac OS X)
Could someone who is having the "no sound" problem please shoot me an email? My address is lynn at pyehouse dot com. For the record, I too get no sound (just a full length silent audio file) if I try to convert from protected AAC to any other format using QTConvert. This happens if you have upgraded to the latest QuickTime libraries and such as Apple removed the capability to convert from this format. Instead, you get silence. I suspect they moved the codec directly into the applications that need it like iTunes, iMovie etc. as they seem unaffected. If this is not the case for you (you're trying to convert MP3 or something to MOV) then shoot me a letter. Regards, Lynn [alert admin]

QueueSongAppX 1.1 (Mac OS X)
I was glad to see the Party Shuffle feature as much as anyone and truth be told it did a lot of what I hoped to do with QSAX. However... I have playlists I've already set up in a particular order with a lot of songs, so that I can sit and code for extended periods without having to muck with anything. It's my equivalent of inspirational or mood music for coding I guess. Anyway, sometimes I just want to skip a song, but don't want to really change anything else. To use Party Shuffle in such a scenario, I would need to a) add the first part of the play list to Party Shuffle, b) add the second part as well, skipping the songs I want to skip and c) be jerked back to reality when my shuffle hits the end and starts randomly picking stuff from my library or wherever. I would prefer to be able to set my playlist to loop and then use QSAX every once in awhile to skip a song here and there. I've asked for this sort of feature to be built into iTunes, but naturally got no response. It's probably not worth the time and effort for them to implement. So I keep QSAX around for when I need it and let others have it for when they want it. But back to the point, yes, I too use QSAX less now that Party Shuffle is available, but it still seems to have its uses for me. [alert admin]

TimeStat 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Hi all. Just to let you know, I dropped the installer in favor of simple drag and drop install since it is what most folks are used to. Also there is now included a Readme on how to install and set it up for automatic startup at login. And you can now launch Address Book with it to. But really, I swear, no more features. *mumble*for now*mumble* Also, one new preset format. Regards, Lynn [alert admin]

TimeStat 1.2 (Mac OS X)
You know, I really wish VT allowed you to send messages to other users. In this case, Tice_582 has reported a problem and I have no way to follow up with the user to see what's going on. I can only hope they send me email and/or check back here to follow up. The installer should have installed TimeStat into your /Applications folder. Just like any other application (menu bar or otherwise), you'll need to open Finder and double click the app to start it. You should then get a default formatted clock in your menubar. A couple of caveats. If your menubar already has a lot of "stuff" in it, the menu of the currently active application will mask menubar items. And as you decrease your resolution, it takes less and less for this to happen. For instance, I have a 15" TiBook and have the battery level, airport indicator and TimeStat in the right of my menubar. For most applications, if they are active their menu doesn't get very close to the right (for instance Safari has File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Window, Help and in my case Debug with plenty of room to spare between Debug and the TimeStat display). But when I run Xcode, there are so many menu items on the menubar that if I'm not careful about what I've put into TimeStat, the menubar automatically hides TimeStat (or whatever is left most anyway). Now, it could be that I somehow packaged the app incorrectly, but then I did test this on my wife's Powerbook and had no problems. It could be that somehow, in spite of having packaged it properly, something happened such that the app wasn't installed properly. In that case I would ask Tice_582 to open Finder, make sure the search area is set to "Local Disks" and enter TimeStat in the field to see if it was installed in a weird location. It could be that the user has a really low resolution and lots of other goodies in the right side of their menu bar, in which case TimeStat probably is running but isn't being displayed. It could be that the user expected the application to be auto started, in which case I would ask that they go to Finder into the /Applications folder and double click the TimeStat app to start it. One thing I will do, out of courtesy to anyone interested in using this, is to whip up a simple Readme to explain what should happen and what to do. I'm sorry I didn't do that in the first place. Please, please, please though, for myself and any other developer whose software you grab through VT, if you have problems, email the developer responsible. Write on VT if you wish, but if the developer can't get feedback on what folks are having problems with, they can't possibly be expected to supply a decent application. [alert admin]

Smultron 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I'm a Hydra/SubEthaEdit fan myself but am always interested in something that can make my work a bit easier. I grabbed a copy of Smultron and immediately liked it. I like the look, I like the layout, I like the feature set, I like everything except... I work on a number of reports that are in the largeish realm of size. Nothing like 100's of MB, but some that are, say, 5 MB in size. Loading such files is somewhat sluggish as is navigating such files. These reports aren't in any particular format (C, PHP, Java, etc), just plain text, so I'm already not syntax highlighting. I turned off line numbering to no avail. Essentially, it is this one thing that is keeping me from switching to Smultron from SEE and why I'm giving a 4 instead of a 5. I look forward to seeing future revisions of this software and will be keeping an eye on it. For the record, I have a TiBook 800 with 1 GB RAM. Speed and memory shouldn't be an issue (particularly since SEE hasn't a problem with these files). Regards, Lynn [alert admin]

I assume you used -f? If not, give it a try. Particularly if you know it was a supported configuration. Please contact me if you wish to pursue this: lynn @AT@ pyehouse .DOT. com. Thanks, Lynn [alert admin]

LAME QuickTime MP3 Encoder Component 1.01 (Mac OS X)
Hi,
In response to the problems of installing the component but not seeing it show up in exporter lists, I forgot to add that you must have installed the LAME framework, also available from VersionTracker, in order for the component to work properly. The installation order doesn't matter as long as both are present before you try to use the component.
This is the framework link.

QTConvert 1.4 (Mac OS X)
Warning: Doesn't work with latest updates
The latest updates to QuickTime (and it might also be to do with iTunes) have rendered QTConvert and any other applications relying on the QuickTime libraries to do conversions, incapable of converting protected m4p (Protected AAC) files to other formats. An update to iMovie was released that apparently circumvents this issue. Perhaps that means there is still a hook in the QuickTime API to do the conversion, but it probably means the codec is now embedded directly in the iMovie software. I will poke around a bit to see if I can revive QTConvert, but I can't guarantee anything. Regards, Lynn [alert admin]

The Framework is only part of it. The other part is the LAME MP3 component. The component is what DP4 would (possibly) detect and display to you, assuming it uses QuickTime for export components.

Okay, I've submitted a screen shot and also put it up on my webpage, too. Hope this helps. What isn't entirely clear is the nature of the text area in the format screen. It's a listing of the available format specifiers for when you set up your own custom format.

To reply to my own comment, I stand corrected. I went back and compared SubEthaEdit to Smultron for a number of my "large" files and found that the performance was roughly equivalent. And with the convenient toolbar option of turning off syntax coloring, performance actually improves quite easily compared with SEE. Now if I could only get Smultron to show up in "Open with..." in Finder.

this is not a new thing guys...
True, it's not new. In case some wonder, no, I didn't have a look at the code before writing mine. The history of cscreen goes back to a post on a message board (Mac OS X Hints IIRC) where someone asked for this functionality. I wrote the utility, mentioned it and posted to VT. All else has been added features based on user feedback. I'm not entirely sure what the point of your comment was, though, or…
