SuperNotecard 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Finally, an index card note program for OS X! ![]()

(First note -- the problem earlier this week with cards disappearing unexpectedly seems to be fixed with the latest patch. So go download it now!) I am a graduate student who uses index cards to keep track of research for writing papers. For a couple years, I have been looking for an OS X program to handle this for me, as my handwriting is awful and I have an iBook. I've tried lots of "organizers" such as Circus Ponies Notebook, etc. -- but they never seem to work as I want them to, and I've had to stick with the handwritten notes, or with a Classic program (TakeNote!). I found SuperNotecard, (then called Miss LonelyNotes) a few months ago, and it soon became apparent that this is the closest program to what I have been looking for. The program's primary focus seems to be fiction, and I have not tried it in fiction mode, but the non-fiction mode is pretty good. Each card has a title and can be linked to multiple References (sources). You can shuffle cards around into different orders to sort your ideas. Cards are stored in decks, but each deck can contain both cards and other decks, so you can have a fairly complicated hierarchical structure if you want. In this new version, References are more powerful -- you can have the program keep track of things like page numbers, publishers, reference type, etc. (Now if it would just automatically print a bibliography in MLA format...) You can define Categories for your cards; I haven't used this with much depth yet, though I do have a couple of Categories defined. It seems useful, but I need to figure out how best to use it! :) You can also flag cards, with notations to explain why you flagged them. This is a good program, with good support (I had a problem earlier this week and they got back to me immediately, and released a patch to fix it just a couple of days later). If you are writing either fiction or non-fiction, it is well-worth checking out. A couple of comments: The automatic spell check seems to slow the program down, so I've turned it off. (I can spell check the final paper I write, so I don't worry about the spelling of my notes.) I wish I could have it print cards in 3x5, 4x6, or 5x7 format, so I could lay all the cards out on the table and shuffle them around the old-fashioned way. :) It would be handy to occasionally have the cards in hard-copy form. Currently you can print the cards on separate pages, or put all the cards on one page, but I would also like to print in the actual card form factor sometimes. These are quibbles, though. This is good software, and thanks to Mindola for finally filling this need! [alert admin]

SuperNotecard 1.5 (Mac OS X)
The folks at Mindola have been very responsive, and they may have found the problem -- it may have to do with hitting cmd-X in a certain view. (I did not intentionally do this but it is possible I might have bumped the keys -- I am a big klutz on my iBook's little keyboard). Of course it did not do what would have been expected, as the deck disappeared from the Explorer while still remaining in the main window, so I didn't automatically guess what the problem might have been. Thanks to Mindola for working on this. It's still a good idea to always back-up your work, no matter what program you are using. ;) [alert admin]

SuperNotecard 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Careful with this upgrade! Backup your work!
Just e-mailed the following to Mindola tech support: I just downloaded the first "SuperNotecard" version, opened one of my .mln files, and was happily working for a while... then it started eating my data. I am not sure what happened. I saved the file, then noticed that one of my decks disappeared from the Explorer. But that deck was still open in the main window. I clicked into another deck, and then was unable to get back to the lost deck. I checked the trash, and it wasn't there. I added some more cards, and tried to figure out what I had done to make this happen. I couldn't, but then other cards started just.... disappearing. I ended up quitting and telling SN not to save the project, so it wouldn't lose all my data... I reopened, and the data is there again. Anyway, I don't know if this is some really unusual problem, or what, but for the moment, I recommend working only with files that are well backed up, and keep your old version of Miss Lonelynotes around to work with if you are working on something indispensable. Other than that... many of the improvements in the new version are great! But of course if data is disappearing, it doesn't matter. :( Hopefully someone will be able to figure out why this is happening so I can upgrade. :) [alert admin]

Jahtzee 1.1.0.0 (Mac OS X)
Nice little program for what it is. And the price is right. ![]()

I can see why an earlier commenter mentioned Super Dice-It -- Jahtzee's interface looks very much like it. However, it has no Triple Yahtzee mode. (Is there ANY OS X Yahtzee clone that does?) I like the click-double click method of choosing where to place scores -- it prevents errors but it is not annoying since it's just an extra click. The program is very plain in appearance, but this is not a bad thing. I think it looks nice and clean, and I like the little lock icons that show which dice are locked. The only changes I would really like to see are: Triple Yahtzee mode (it's easy to add, I think), the ability to play against the computer, and user-configurable lock keys. I am used to Super Dice-It's lock keys, which were based on the vertical position of each die on the screen. So from the top down, it was Num Lock, 7, 4, 1, and 0 -- vertically right down the side of the numeric keypad, instead of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 on the keypad. The Jahtzee method is slower for me because I have to count the die's position and translate that to the number. This might just be because I am so used to the other method, or maybe it's just a flaw in how my brain works. ;) Anyway, if I could configure those keys, I would be pretty happy with it. I am also glad to see the programmer is from my alma mater, The Evergreen State College! [alert admin]

iMOnTime 2.1 (Mac OS X)
I've been evaluating iMOnTime for a couple of weeks now, and it seems to do exactly what I want -- but there is a problem. Whenever a program window comes up and I need to edit any of the fields, it's tremendously SLOW. I click on the field I want to edit (such as setting the snooze time to a particular length), and then I have to sit back and wait for a long time before the focus changes to that field -- sometimes more than a minute. Then when I type the change, it's another minute before the text changes on the screen. I have top running in a terminal window, and when this is occurring, it shows that iMOnTime is using as much as 85% of the CPU. So something is definitely wrong. (I'm on a G4 iMac with 1G RAM, by the way. OS X 10.3.6.) I would otherwise like to register the software, but I am very iffy about it considering this problem. Tonight it took 8 minutes to delete an existing reminder (after attempting to edit it) and make a new one. I don't believe it was this slow when I first started to use the program -- it seems to have gotten worse. I don't have a lot of reminders currently set up -- maybe about 7 total with 2 appearing in a given day. So it's not that I am overloading the software. Any comments about this? Anyone else seeing the same problem? [alert admin]

microSynth 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)
I understand the need to remind people to pay for the software. However, the reminder window that pops up is far, far too annoying -- it appears way too often, and it really makes me not want to ever buy the product. This is a demo -- I would like to be able to try the demo for at least a day or two without the constant interruptions. *Every* time I tried to record anything the window would pop up and ruin it. I do pay for shareware, but I don't pay for software that acts this way. I don't mind if it just expires after a week or a month or so, that would be fair -- but this is just infuriating. I'm going to look elsewhere because of it. Please don't treat potential customers as criminals! Let us evaluate the software for a while before crippling it! [alert admin]

Guitar Shed 1.3 (Mac OS X)
Installed the demo tonight, and found that it won't let me make any changes in the drop down menus. So I can't choose different chords, can't change the drums from rock to funky, etc. Anything involving changing selections in drop menus is broken. I am running Panther; don't know if that has anything to do with it. [alert admin]

Finally, an index card note program for OS X!
I want to add a comment to the previous review -- I only gave three stars for support, but it was for support/documentation, not just for support. Mindola's support is worth 5 stars! But I would like to see better documentation, and perhaps a forum on their website where users can share ideas. The software does come with a help file that is good partial documentation, but I was hoping for more, and I really…

Careful with this upgrade! Backup your work!
Just some additional info -- the folks at Mindola have already contacted me, so they are being very responsive. :) Basically I'm just posting here to let people know they should be careful and back up their work, just in case. But I'm sure this will all be fixed soon. :)

It does connect to the servers I use just fine with 10.3.7. However, it might be that your servers are now using SFTP, and Fetch doesn't work with that yet.

OK, replying to myself to say I found a copy at http://asgard.actrix.co.nz/macintosh/games/yahtzee/Dice-It.sit, and Dice-It *is* the game I played for hours on end about 14 years ago. :) It has Triple as well as Single Yahtzee modes, and one of the things I liked best about it was that you could select the dice to roll by using the numeric keypad instead of the mouse. Basically, I, like the above poster, am looking for an…

If I recall correctly -- Super Dice-It may have been a version of Triple Yahtzee. I'm not sure -- I had a great old Triple Yahtzee clone in the old OS 7 days, and the name Super Dice-it really rings a bell. I haven't downloaded your software yet, but what I personally am here looking for is a fast, quick Triple Yahtzee. It's much more fun than plain single Yahtzee since there is more strategy…
