Leap 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

You can teach me something new!

I'm one of those Mac users pathologically addicted to the Finder. Habit, I guess. It's part of my brain at this point. Had no interest in replacements; that is, ,until Leap. Leap was a great program, but Leap 2 is even better; more intuitive, nice GUI enhancements, faster. It really gives me a reason to spend a bit of extra time tagging important documents (which is very easy with Default Folder and Yep). Finding documents is so easy and, that serendipity stuff alluded to on Ironic's web stie actually is very useful. In looking for a specific document, you stumble across related items you had forgotten were there. In some cases you find something that works better than what you were looking for and, in the best case, something you find triggers a great idea, a new fork in the road or unsticks something that has bogged you thought process down for weeks. Anyway, I really like it. I had trouble downloading the file initially and emailed support which responded quickly with a new link. [alert admin]

Photo to Movie 4.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Stable useful program for creating captivating shows from photos

I've used this program to create slide shows (although they run more like movies) for special occasions. For my wife's 50th, I collected her old photos and our family photos and put together a great set of programs for her party. Late into the night, I put on a simple review of the best photos set to music and, honestly attendees, young and old, simply sat down and watched the program for quite a long time, laughing at times and clapping at others. It was really magical. The program is very simple to use and get great, professional results. [alert admin]

Bento 2.0v2 (Mac OS X)

I usually don't jump on the pile of negative comments, but...

as a very loyal Mac user (I have 2 pages written about me in "The Cult of the Mac"), I have to turn up the reverb on all the very negative and very accurate comments about Bento 2. I bought a family pack of the first iteration of Bento and even the serial numbers were misprinted and I had to work through tech support and waste a heap of time just to be able to use the product. Now, after limping along with this mediocre bit of shareware, I am asked to shell out another $100 for a piddling (in terms of new features) upgrade. Apple needs a big wake up call on this. I usually buy Apple products without even thinking in terms of cost/benefit (I'm a shareholder and so can justify the expenditure pretty easily plus its my addiction), but I absolutely won't be fool enough to waste my dough to be insulted in this manner. Perfect Diet Tracker 2.0.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Worthwhile, but not "Perfect"

With a week of use, I find that PDT fits my needs pretty well: quick entry, ability to add your own items and save them to Favorite Foods, ability to enter exercise and some rudimentary stats and graphs. I would love to see (1) ability to track mono & polu unsat fats; (2) bar graph of percents of all food breakdowns (% fat, % that are sat, monounsat, polyunsat, % carbs, % of carbs as fiber, sugar; (3) BMI graph that follows user over time; (4) Calories burned as exercise graph; (5) a bit more modern GUI (although it's not bad), and (6) sync with iPhone and other computers via .mac. I really loved Diet & Exercise Assistant by Keyoe Software, but it only works with Palm and Windows and now that I use iPhone, can't use (there is no Mac desktop version). Pity, otherwise a nearly perfect diet and exercise tracker. For us mobile types, an iPhone version is pretty essential. I hope that development continues with this already nifty product so that, one day, it can live up to its name. [alert admin]

Default Folder X 4.0.1b2 (Mac OS X)

The one "must have" program for the Mac OS

There are a number of programs that I really like and would sorely miss if they vanished from my Mac, but Default Folder is the one that would make my life quite a bit more miserable if gone. This program is now quite visually beautiful and, as ever, helps me remain quick and organized at any point that I need to save anything, anywhere on my Mac. [alert admin]

MailTags 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)

The app makes Mail and iGTD rock (also, life a lot easier)

I am really confused by some recent comments/reviews about MailTags. I've used both iterations of this program for quite a while now with NO problems of any kind and have benefitted greatly from the organizational capabilities that MailTags adds to Mail, iCal and iGTD. With this program you can set up smart mailboxes that instantly organize important emails (and, BTW, the tags also work in MailSteward) so that you can find invoices, shipping notices, updated email addresses sent to you by business associates, friends and family. You can also easily use MailTags with the other apps mentioned to turn emails into useful and organized To Do's. I never understand why people are so quick to downgrade an app (espeically one with a long history of glowing reviews like MailTags) rather than take the time to figure out what they are doing wrong or not doing right. BTW, I am an intermediate level Mac user with no ties to this or any other software or hardware company. [alert admin]

MailSteward 7.8.6 (Mac OS X)

Works so subtlely, yet completely reliable...

This app is so useful. I had to get used to the fact that it runs so quietyly in the background that you don't really know that it is working; yet, every time I check to see if yesterday's emails were, in fact, achived... there they are! So rock solid that I've taken to routinely deletely all emails from Mail that are more than 3 months old... in fact, I believe that I could reliably change that to all emails that are more than 3 hours old. All your emails are in a great searchable database including attachments that are searchable is so many ways. And, as per another reviewer, the whole Mail app, if not the whole Mac itself, runs faster and smoother since installing MailSteward. So of the best money I've ever spend on software. [alert admin]

TimeNet 3.85 (Mac OS X)

Best product of its kind small business

After losing TimeShark (a great invoice/billing program that never made it to OS X successfully), I looked around for quite a while for a program that would allow me to track jobs and expenses and create invoices and track data for tax purposes. TimeNet does a more than adequate job. On the occasions that I have had a question, the response from tech support was unusually prompt and spot on helpful. I have no affiliation with TimeNet, but felt the need to set the record straight after MisterPish tossed his toys out of the cot in the previous post. [alert admin]

Web Confidential 3.7.6 (Mac OS X)

Neither WC nor Alco are dead

I was alarmed at some of the posts in which people vented frustration with lack of updates, especially regarding release of Universal Binary. These issues have not bothered me personally, because WC continues to function for me (MacPro, Intel, dual 3.0 running 10.4.10) quickly and in its usual rock solid manner. It continues to sync with my Palm Treo giving me access to all of my data anywhere I travel (although my new iPhone makes that a mute issue). In many years of use, zero problems with this program and prompt replys to all of my inquiries made from time to time of Alco. So, I too was puzzled by his low key posture recently. So, I emailed him and got a response, as usual, within a few hours. Turns out that Alco has been ill, but appears to be on the mend and remains intent on delivering a Universal Binary version of WC and remains committed to the program. I do not, however, have specifics or a timetable. BTW, I do not know Alco personally and have no relationship to him professionally. I agree that Alco would benefit from some public relations consultant advising better communication with his customers, but other than that I have full faith in him and his product. [alert admin]

To answer your question in two words...

Steve Becker. I only have a handful of developer's names in my head; all because they are fair, decent, engaging and make a great product EXCEPT Steve Becker whose name takes up some space because he is arrogant and typically spins one app into two, three or more. The word value has little meaning to Becker who, while making useful apps, leaves them flawed and them remedies the problem with a new app…

the add-on from hell

Sounds like you need a new computer or a re-install. I've experienced none of the problems that you are citing. This is a great app and basically, IMHO, your one star refers either to your equipment or your computer experience and not at all to the value of this app which will end up steering people away from a real time saver and life organizer. Shame.

Charge for every Postcard printed

While I agree with you completely, I wouldn't fault the author for building this option into the app as it is very convenient and clever even if prohibitively expensive. What I'm saying is that take this feature away (which no one has to use) and you still have a stellar 5 star app well worth the cost. And, in a pinch, if you need to send some marketing or personal cool cards in…

Response to Xiaopangzi post on April 6th 2005.

StepWare's response doesn't address any specifics in the critical appraisal of prior commentator...and it should. The post was not a rant, but a reasoned criticism by an obviously educated consumer very familiar with the product. As a Mac user, I think I have a right to know honest specifics regarding parity with a Windows version and, if parity isn't forthcoming very soon, why does the price remain equal between the two versions? …

How can I put this politely?

Seems a bit harsh. If price is the issue, state that, but rate the program on its merits or lack thereof. Slowness is a legitimate issue to discuss, but depends on what the program ultimately accomplishes compared to FB. I have TidyUp, but haven't ussed it enough to respond directly to your rant, but still feel that you're panning a program based on two items out of hundreds upon which to base…

Not for me either

I think your comment is spot on. I'm an experienced mac user and am very familiar with GTD and various attempts to create a GTD based software solution (so far ThinkingRock is best), but I'm not not sure what is being done here and why. Why would I want new folders/files I create on a to do list? I'm not sure how to work with my emails and ical todos from within…

Why? Why?

Santa just put the lot of you on his "naughty" list. For shame! (BTW, I'm also an atheist, but people freely expressing themselves, including in religious or spiritual ways, doesn't seem to get to me the way it does you; OTOH, intolerance does).

Can't even handle tape labels

I found this comment over-the-top harsh and the 1-star rating ridicuous. I mean cars suck because they can't fly, right? OTH, I also thought BeLight's answser fell a bit short of the mark. DYMO labelers are common & standard and their software is not great (that's where your frustration & 1-star should have gone) and I think BeLight should address the labeling issue and quickly or their great software may be left…
