Google Quick Search Box 2.0.0.1447 (Mac OS X)
The AHT guy is probably alluding to the fact that the main dev on Quicksilver left it to work for Google and out pops this. Until I hear that Google has grown up about their so-called updater I think I'll be giving this a pass. How's that for flat out direct non zen commentary? [alert admin]

MPlayer OSX Extended 1.0 ext6 (Mac OS X)
I don't post many reviews at Versiontracker anymore.. but in this case I *have* to make an exception. This is an AWESOME port of MPlayer. Previously I could ONLY do what could be done using terminal commands; in addition, the author has cleaned up some freetype/font config bugs that kept me from seeing styled subtitles the way they were meant to be seen. Add to that EASY font color [for SRT] and scaling, even of styled fonts, and MKV chaptering [only available via Quicktime with Perian, *not* VLC], and MPE is a winner. Yes, there are minor little bugs [like forcing aspect ratio broken], but at this point MPE's a winner. My nephew and I [Macross Frontier fans!] thank the dev. Fantastic job! Also: The source builds very easily. Thank you for putting the source up as well! [alert admin]

Flock 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Flock is a specialty browser... ![]()

All posts about who has the most grey hairs aside, Flock is an excellent browser for what it is DESIGNED FOR. * Aggregating media and content [RSS updates from Facebook, Flickr, Digg, etc] * Updates from your 'Friends' [also via the above]. * Blogging. Since I've moved to LiveJournal, which is a bit clunky, the one off web blogger in Flock is a lot more apropo than say, Ecto or MarsEdit. I'm sure that if you bug the Flock people that MAYBE they'd add USPS label printing from eBay or whatever if enough users wanted it. Tho', probably not. As to the password thing this is something endemic to Gecko based browsers. Some of the browsers have it down [Camino], some may not. If you want consistency, then use 1Password. I [also] do. Flock is not crapware by any stretch of the imagination. If you want an 'all things to all people' application, be prepared to shell out the dough. If you really want examples of crapware read my last review... [smirk] [alert admin]

iQuarantine X 10.5.3 (Mac OS X)
You can read my comments over at MacUpdate.com or not, but here it is- This. is. crapware. Apple put the quarantine feature in there for a reason. So that users don't have to worry about bad files or downloads or *.jpeg.exe.bat files the way Windows users do. Pay this 'developer' to for the crapware to hobble your system at your own peril. Because of course "Power Users" will be tricked into disabling security, right? Power users don't need safeguards, from like, malware that can blow away their /home directories, right? Where have we heard this kind of rhetoric before? I'll tell you: from malware types. Another thing. If you really want to have fun, do a whois on the developer's domain. Or check out that there is no contact information on their website and judge for yourself. [alert admin]

Apple iPhoto 7.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Slightly dumbed down, like the rest of iLife 08. ![]()

This iteration of iPhoto, while having a number of new 'gee whiz' features -- also suffers from the great 'dumbing down' that other users are complaining about with iMovie and iDVD.
My gripes are here:
http://expatleo.wordpress.com/2007/08/28/iphoto-7-drops-n-up-printing-as-a-feature-dumb/
I also list the workarounds to get around this so-called 'enhancement'.
C'mon Apple. Bring back N-Up and real contact sheets.
I would give iPhoto 6 4.5 stars, and at this point recommend it over iPhoto 7.0x for at least the next couple months.
I'm currently using iPhoto 7, but am annoyed that at least 50% of the time I have to jump thru hoops like those above to get things done, things that came easy in iPhoto 5 and 6.

Inquisitor 2.6.2 (Mac OS X)
The deal is broken for me on this one. I've used this for over a year, and paid for it long ago, but-
* Zero support from the developer. Repeated emails / bug reports to the dev go unanswered.
* No changelog or notes with the distro. Sorry, but your blog
http://www.newsfirex.com/blog/ does not count.
* The dev is dropping Camino support. See http://www.pimpmycamino.com/
Bearing this in mind, and also that Inquisitor is an *Input Manager* plugin -- which I would not leave on my system without developer support or bugfixes...my current recommendation is to pass this up, even if the developer is offering this 'for free' with his other products. [alert admin]

PGP Desktop 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Not really that useful for OSX...mandatory for Win32 users. ![]()

Well, I finally downloaded B3 (yes, this is still beta). Observations: * The gpg mail bundle [aka the gpg plugin for Mail 2.01) has better options (like auto-decrypt of msgs by Keychain), and is MUCH more practical (like full display of signing and encrypting keys. So you can guess which one I disabled. Yes, in PGP9 there is a manual mode for those of us running proxies, but as I state above the PGP Mail plugin is CLUNKY. If you're still an Entourage user their scripts are fine, but if you're in Mail 2 already, disable the plugin from PGP.com and use the other one. * The UI is very pretty, but that's not why I bought PGP. I'm sure they paid their UI people very well, and there's a lot of back patting going on there. But it's not useful. * Again, encrypted chat is wonderful if anyone would use it. For the home / casual user, the price is too high, and there's too much bloat in PGP to justify this. Corp users will have to standardize on this beast or face conflicts from other plugins, etc. * This is just my 2 yen, but MacOSX has outgrown PGP. We have FileVault / SecureVM in Tiger, and the ability to make AES-128 disk images in Disk Utility! Couple this with FREE downloads of GPG packages that do not have to be compiled, and the Mail plugin (search this site), and it quickly becomes apparent that PGP 9 is merely a 'secure tax' for Windoze users. * PGP.com also deserves to be roundly slammed for how they have [not] handled upgraders. Add to the fact that you have to pay for questionable support practices and this becomes a no-brainer to stick with the open source alternative. Too bad the Win32 users don't have this choice, but then again this is PGP.com's current market. For the record, I gave PGP 7 - 8.x 4 stars. It's too bad PGP.com drank the Kool-Aid on this version, I want 8.x support back. [alert admin]

Google is still doing the 'update in the background' nonsense. Duly giving this a pass.

Obviously this user needs to pony up the $$$ at pgp.com and get the clicky clicky installer version. Or learn how to read. GPG *is* a Unix tool made MUCH more simple by the macgpg folks. Kudos to them. Note to the user: read the fine manual, it seems to work for everyone else.

MacUpdate doesn't seem to have a problem discussing this. See the Picasa and GEarth reviews over there. And for the record, Picasa does this too. VERY annoying.

I also got hit by this single user script bug. The ONLY thing I could do after NOT being able to start Finder or SystemUI server was to restore from Time Machine Backup. I've been a longtime user of TCC/LCC, this is the first time I've been bitten by a bug like this... My advice is to love/use Time Machine. *This time* it was Time Machine that saved my bacon.

Your contact email at Versiontracker is not totally filled out. Sorry, it's not false hype unlike your veiled threats. Your 'software' circumvents security put in place by Apple for good reasons. Want to show us that your intentions are good? Do this- 1/ Put a warning on your homepage that use of your app will disable security features on users machines. 2/ Publish the source code or project so that others can audit and confirm that that is all…

Guys: This is not quite fair to foist upon this developer. SIMBL is a package developed by Mike Solomon [unrelated to these guys, and the dev of PithHelmet as well]. It's -really- important to be running the current version of SIMBL unless you like inputmanager trouble. If the 1Passwd crew just picked up the distro from Mike on trust then you should reserve this opinion to Mike. http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php Not all software that 'phones home' does so maliciously.…

AppZapper uses Spotlight AFAIK to find relevent pieces. While I can't comment on the other apps [like Spring Cleaning], bear in mind that AppZapper really is an OS X app. As to finding -everything- if you just wanted to deinstall iWeb from iLIfe 06, are you sure you'd want AppZapper taking ALL the /App support files? Even from the other iApps? I think these devs asked that question and chose wisely. I'd probably like it if…
