iEmulator 1.7.7 (Mac OS X)

An objective (hopefully) review

I'm not new to PC emulators on the Mac as I've used at some point SoftWindows, Virtual PC (not the current version though), Bochs, and now iEmulator. Configuration of iEmulator is about on par with earlier versions of Virtual PC (1.x), however, unlike Virtual PC it can have multiple emulated PCs running. Now for the hardware that I have been using iEmulator on. An old iMac DV/400 with 384 MB of RAM and MacOS X 10.3.9 On an older system such as this with no OPenGL acceleration, you have to uncheck the OPenGL rendering for the PC window to have it work. Performance is not steller however, it does work quite well at what it is supposed to do. The OS I'm running on it is Win 98 SE with updates. One thing that does annoy me however is that you can't run it in full screen mode as far as I can tell. There is one other thing that annoys me and I think it is connected to the fact that I'm using a machine that doesn't have OpenGL acceleration, namely that having Zoom (MacOS X's magnification software) on seems to not show the cursor in the PC window when Zoom is active. Despite these minor setbacks iEmulator is a good buy at the price and I expect that it will get better as some prior issues I had with the emulator have been fixed. Don't take my word for it though, shop around yourself and look at other emulators. On a side note, iEmulator is way easier to configure than Bochs :-/ Note: I'm a hard person to please so, my ratings are a bit lower than some here however, I feel they are fair. [alert admin]

EdenGraph 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)

EdenGraph is on par with GraphingCalculator from PacTech

I've tried the 1.2 version of EdenGraph. Years ago, I used to use Graphing Calculator and this is about on par so far. The previous reviews here are for a much older version of the program from years ago. If you need a graphing calculator this is something to seriously consider. [alert admin]

Undo Toolkit 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Undo Toolkit Comment

I looked at the developer's page and then noticed the developer rant about people's objection's to the GPL. I should point out that some of us subscribe to the idea that if a person wants your code (or mine for that matter), you negotiate terms that you both find beneficial. For example, I'm willing to give certain developers my code for free and not under the GPL if they do not redistribute the code except in object form as part of their program. Then there is the BSD style license which I like to use for some of my code. This gives a person unlimited right to use provided they acknoledge where it came from. Further I take issue with the statement that people aren't allowed to make money from their hard work. At no stage was this addressed in the author's rant. Because of this I refuse to use the software under the GPL. Though these days I'm more into cross-platform development in C++ (I used to write a lot of REALbasic software) Now as for the buying it, it's only an Undo engine, if I need one, I'll write my own unless I could buy the rights for say $50 or less. There is upgrade…

pricing but, to get it you have to go directly to the developer and the only way to do it on a computer is to run a special order application that is only Classic PPC (Supposedly working on Carbon). I just want something to edit resources fo4r certain legacy apps. There is a project on sourceforge for a resource editor see, if it ever amounts to anything. [alert admin]

Love it. The…

author was kind enough to give me a student discount when requested for Stone Studio. Create is a good replacement for InDesign (tried InDesign first). The HTML export is also pretty good. As for the other apps: PStill is a PostScript distiller of sorts it reads EPS/PS files and can send them to Create or convert them to PDF. PStill used with DOCtor (free from Stone) can convert Word files to PDF (useful as I don't use Word). TimeEquals Money: Nice little money tracking program. This package is well worth what I paid for it :-) [alert admin]

Iconographer X 2.3 (Mac OS X)

From a fellow…

shareware developer. I rather doubt that he doesn't care but, you shouldn't bother him unless it is important. As for the program itself. It is lovely. [alert admin]

Why pay iEmulator when you get QemuX for free?!

I did try QemuX however, it had many more problems than iEmulator . For me Bochs was easier to deal with than QemuX because QemuX tried to download the Qemu binaries and pretended it worked. I prefer when you can install the binaries yourself as there is less likelyhood of a problem, unless you can do that now then it is a no go for me as I don't approve of apps…
