MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.6 (Mac OS X)
Good but not great and certainly not perfect
I use it every day and find indispensable. It copes with my difficult technical vocabulary. A Brazilian colleague finds it copes perfectly well with his accent. But I have sympathy with the negative comments, too. It is pretty flaky and it crashes a lot. They need to put a lot more effort into cleaning up the bugs. [alert admin]

Retrospect 8.0.736 (Mac OS X)
The negative comments surprise me. It is true that Retrospect was released prematurely, as we can see by the subsequent patches. However, the current version is a good deal more reliable than Retrospect 6 regarding such important matters as executing scheduled backups. The new interface makes it much easier than before to survey past activities. Keeping the former version of Retrospect around to read old backups is no problem. There is of course no need to buy new media: when the time comes to recycle backup media, simply use the new format. [alert admin]

MacSpeech Dictate 1.5 (Mac OS X)
I have depended on Dictate for all my typing for perhaps a year now. It has got better and better. With version 1.5, I encountered major problems; technical support were helpful and we eventually discovered that Dictate will not run correctly unless a US English profile exists (fortunately, it does not have to be trained). I had to delete my old profile and start afresh. On the bright side, recognition is better with version 1.5 than with the former version, even with a brand-new profile. So I am happy with version 1.5, but non-US customers might want to wait until they release a patch. I dictated all of the above with no manual correction whatever. Colleagues are regularly impressed with the lengthy reports I can produce using speech recognition. [alert admin]

Picasa 3.0.5 (Mac OS X)
I can't stand the Google software updater. It pesters you to download the update, which it then cannot install unless you are an administrator. If an administrator installs the new version manually, the updater does not recognize this and continues to pester users. Until Google fix their update system I won't be running any of their software. [alert admin]

MacPorts 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)
It certainly isn't for beginners and amateurs, but it is very useful for people who need access to UNIX software. I stopped using Fink because it stopped working for me (I actually thought it had been discontinued). I have had no problems with MacPorts. [alert admin]

Fontcase 1.1 (Mac OS X)
Fontcase is excellent for browsing, previewing and organising fonts. It may not meet the needs of professionals, but many ordinary users have hundreds of fonts installed. Fontcase will help them make the most of those fonts. If it works internally using Apple's own mechanisms, so much the better! [alert admin]

I have used MacSpeech Dictate since being diagnosed with RSI in the spring. It is the first such product that is actually a pleasure to use. This update makes it even better, with improved recognition and the ability to train unusual words. [alert admin]

StuffIt Deluxe 2009 13.0 (Mac OS X)
StuffIt compression is far more effective than that produced by zip. I generate large datasets in my work. I tried an example just now. StuffIt compressed the folder down to 1.7 MB. Tar and gzip compressed it to 4.4 MB. Zip compressed it to 9.2 MB... I do not bother to upgrade every year, but you can upgrade cheaply from any prior version. The new version is much better than version 11. [alert admin]

DiskWarrior 4.1 (Mac OS X)
Reads old CD. Then says "The DiskWarrior CD could not be ejected". Click "try again". It fails again. Eject the CD yourself and it still won't let you continue. It displays a different error number each time. I have started from scratch three times. This updater does not work. [alert admin]

Wanna make backups you can never use?
I have restored from Retrospect backups numerous times over the years. Why don't you keep the old versions if that's the only problem?

OK if you run it from an admin account (even though it requests admin credentials)

I got the same error. Instead, download the sources from http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/. I just did ./configure; make; sudo make install and it worked first time.
