Apple MacBook Pro EFI Firmware 1.7 (Mac OS X)

new EFI firmware not installing may be okay ...

I received a week ago a new MBPro 17" 3,06 which I customized with a Samsung 250Go SSD. After reading complaints about the 1,5 Gbs SATA limitation, I checked system info and found, surprisingly, a nominal 3 Gbs speed. I suspect that some new MacBookPro shipped with the new firmware already installed, or maybe the 17" is not affected ? So : if the new firmware refuses to install, first check if you really have a 1,5 Gbs limitation ... [alert admin]

Google Earth 5.0.11729.1014 (Mac OS X)

Legal spyware on my computer ?

I think we begin to see Google business model behind the "use freely my wonderful apps" apparently benign and friendly speech. Using "G Earth" with Google currently associated spyware means inviting Big Brother ; and I suspect its only a beginning. Considering the scope of Google's grasp on the average use of internet, expanding in the area of browser (Chrome) and even mobile (Android), I am really frightened by the opportunities of malicious usage left open to them. Call me a pananoiac bloke if you want, but if Google considered this "G Earth" policy a fair one (they may ... we are not obliged to go along, after all), who can tell which kind of "ET call home" hides unnoticed in Chrome or Android I uninstalled everything from Google right now. I suggest strongly you do it as well. [alert admin]

Apple TV 2.3 (Mac OS X)

2.3 : multiple audio track issue, sleep mode issue

2.3 introduced the ability, by pressing "pause" 3 sec, to access a menu "chapters and audio tracks" ; there is an issue with audio track selection : I made a .m4p with 2 tracks (english + french) ; when played, video was OK but no sound. Audio track menu showed both tracks "deactivated" ; I select "french" for example, and I get then the "french" track (although it keeps showing "deactivated") ; I switch to "english" : it works ; but from that point, impossible to switch back to "french", I have to stop the movie, select it again and then the selected audio track is "french". Generally speaking : 2 audio tracks (maybe more) means no sound when movie plays first time; you have to select manually one ; if the selected language is "english", you wont be able to switch to another language without stopping first the movie and replay it. Something else : the sleep mode, which was accessed by pressing "menu" more than 6 sec (before 2.2) disappeared in 2.2, and was supposedly reintroduced in 2.3 ; it was, but only on the main menu ; it used to work everywhere ... which was very useful when you had your TV shut down and wanted to send your ATV to sleep mode, too. Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Be honest, its better ; doesnt mean its good, just better.

I had a rather good experience with this update, considering its a MS product. Installer ran without a glitch, some of the annoying bugs of previous release have disappeared, and, so far, I didnt experience any new bug (is it a surprise ? yes ; remember its a MS update) Word and Excel seem to launch a bit snappier (maybe I'm fooled ...), 4 secs for Word, 3 secs for Excel (second launch , of course). Twice the time Pages takes, but not too bad (remember : its a MS product) Some bad and blatant problems remain, however : some useful features disappeared with VB, and , shame on MBU, OfficeVx (Rosetta ...) remains ... three times quicker ... with every bit of really useful features included (except support of .xlsx and.docx, but they are more on the side of annoyance than usefulness, for average user I mean) Bottom line : there is a fix for Office 2008 problems (especially on old Macs) : upgrade to Office Vx and see ... how MS software can fly ! (or Office 2007 + Parallels, flies too ...) [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.1 (Mac OS X)

Yes, 3.1 is snappier ...

... but the first time I launched it, it crashed ; and crashed again ; reboot ; crash again ; reboot again (just in case ..) ; worked, I dont know why. Otherwise, I found this 3.1 significantly snappier than 3.0 ; not a theoritically matter of n% you never feel in real life. Really snappier. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.2 (Mac OS X)

So far so good ... bettr, I'd say ...

updated a 10.5.1 on MacBookPro 2,6Ghz, with many programs installed (say : Office 2008, Adobe CS3 suite, iLife 08, iWork 08, Final Cut and some 40 additionnal ... , plus usual intensive web and mail, and plug-ins ; not really a standard configuration, I'd say, with 3 regularly used different network configurations - 1 Ethernet, 2 Wi-Fi) So far so good ; install was a breeze, 2 restarts and running. I regret that Safari 3.1 was not added, but ... this comment was just to say something a bit negative, otherwise you would find my review suspicious... [alert admin]

Media 100 12.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Sorry but this software is really not so bad after all ...

I've been using Media100 since ... say ... 1995, along with FCP (since 4-5 years). And I find it usefull, certainly for professionals, but maybe also for the rest of us. First : compared to the magnificent but clumsy interface of FCP (OMG ... those endless options ...), its immediate and easy use. Second (should be first) : its extremely reliable (never quits unexpectidly, no strange behaviour ...). Third : it ships with integrated hardware (acceleration card and input panel rack) and FCP doesnt (have to devise your own hardware configuration ...) ; that makes it a versatile solution (all kind of inputs right out of the box - including SDI and also old things from your VCR, and not only firewire ... usefull to get HD from 3-components, just for example). And fourth : price seems rather OK to me, compared to a FCP + hardware solution. And : the resulting work is professional, up to 1080p/23,97 . I appreciate : easy and immediate use, excellent professionnal resulting work, input versatility, integrated hardware out of the box. Neutral : price. Poor : support / documentation, and they could update the look of their interface. [alert admin]

Nice update, but still can't use Video playlists

I have quite a movie library on iTunes (more than 4500 movies - including series - h264 encoded). Lack of playlists for movies proved a real pain in the ass (I suppose Mr Jobs assumes that we only have movies purchased on iTunes store ...? Personnally, I stupidly buy DVDs). But there is a simple workaround : cmnd-I the first movie in iTunes "Movie library", go to "Vidéo", change the type from 'movie" to "TV show"…
