Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (Mac OS X)

quite good, yet still some annoying bugs...

Switched from 4.0.3 to 6.0 because of universal binary (speed). I like the clear design, ease of use (use it mainly for processing pictures from my digital SLR), reasonable speed and good results. Yet, if you look at reviews of other new Adobe products (CS3) for Mac, you get the impression that Adobe has reduced quality control considerably. With elements, I encountered 2 bugs that annoy me a lot: when you set the application to hide the palettes, the one on the right-hand-side still pops up everytime you open a new file (moving the mouse over the handle reveals a text reading something like "open palette" - so the palette thinks it is hidden whilst it is not, clicking on the handle makes the window hide). Secondly, if you finish your work on an image, hit the close-button a dialogue box comes up prompting you to save/unsave/save as, but hitting "save" brings up the "save as" dialogue... My current work-around is to press ctrl-s which brings up the correct "save" dialogue. on the adobe website you can submit bug-reports which i did - there are quite many bug reports there already... (there is also a forum at adobe's site - its also full of bug-stories). i hope adobe gets rid of all these little - yet annoying - bugs soon! if they were eliminated, i'd re-evaluate PSE and propably give it 5 stars! Photomatix Pro 2.5.3 (Mac OS X)

evaluating

this piece of software is 99,-... FDRTools is exactly half the price and does the same almost equally. unfortunately FDRTools is not on versiontracker. i'm still testing. photomatix' interface looks nicer than FDRTools... but then its double as expensive. [alert admin]

NetNewsWire 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)

synching doesn't work ant the NNW people show NO reaction

i was wondering why a large number of blogs weren't updating on my intel-mac (OSX 10.4.8) for some time. then i restructured my own blog and saw that NNW was not updating my new blog. i pinged feedburner.com and checked the XML on their site - all was o.k. but that damn NNW didn't rect to refresh. i went into the support forums - ried to register there, to no avail, till the very day i haven't received the verification e-mail of my account - sent them an email - of course, no reply. and in the forums, i came across numerous posts of users who have exactly the same problem as i - the only workaround offered by NNW staff is turning of synching wit newsgator (in the prefs). thats it. the NNW staff didn't care answering my support questions, their forum is non-accessible... and thats a bad service for a PAYING customer. iCalamus 104 (Mac OS X)

quite good, yet...

iCalamus runs smoothly on my iMac dual core. the only thing i miss is a decent documentation. a piece of software that costs over USD 100,- should include a decent manual (preferably in a printable version - or as a buying option). OTOH, iCalamus is rather easy to handle if you have some experience with DTP (x-press switchers will find iCalamus a relief!). some functions are still missing (no PS export; or i haven't figured out yet how to streamline certain tasks: e.g. giving all pages a new background colour in a long document with just a few mouse clicks... these issues are probably due to the rather short history of this piece of software and will be resolved soon... i hope). the price is a bit steep currently (considering other options), but again: if iCalamus continues this way ver. 2.9 should be a real bargain at this price! its an investment in something that looks good. multiAd Creator light is only 99,-. and can do a lot more than iCalamus - yet it is only really valuable for single page docs... ragtime has stopped its "private" version and is thus unaffordable for the rest of us, so iCalamus has a lot of opportunities. PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.3 (Mac OS X)

unuseable under modern Universal Binary (Intel) software

this product is REALLY good on powerMacs. alas, there is NO update for universal binary (id est: intel-native) software. safari and camino UB are great, just this piece of software doesn't support them. other plugins like mailAppetizer for apple mail were ported for UB straight away last year (!) and work like a charm. in german: "wer zu spät kommt den bestraft die geschichte" (those who start late will never arrive). its a shame

how can you name a piece of probably useful software after a serial killer who is responsible for at least 6 million murdered in death camps? besides this, did you know that nazi symbolism is forbidden under criminal law in some european countries, noteably in germany and austria - thus you are excluding a potential of about 100 million people (the population of germany and austria counted together) from your software. i'd ask versiontracker to remove this piece of software as long as its called like this and carries this criminal icon. huge files - no sound

did a test 3 min. recording and saving took a looooong time and i ended up with 4 GB (!!) file WITHOUT sound. 3 minutes - no sound - 4,5 Gigas... incredible. since the 15 minutes trial time are over now, i can' re-evaluate with different settings. anyway, the lack of sound recording makes this app only half as useful as it could be. the alternative iShowU offers more - but its beta and crashes at startup (its supposed to record pictures AND sound). i use an iMac core dual intel 2 GHz and 10.4.5 [alert admin]

iShowU 1.0b (Mac OS X)

crashes at startup...

i unstalled vers. 1.0b, the app started, i could customize the capture frame, but nothing would happen when i clicked record, also the finish-button stayed greyed out. the i quit and downloaded 1.0c and the app didn't even launch. it crashed at startup. then threw 1.0c out and reinstalled 1.0b and then this one would also crash at startup. now, i can't even get as far as at the first time. it always crases. mac: dual core intel iMac 20" with 1,5 GB RAM and the newesst version of 10.4.5. currently this app is useless for me. well... i think, a manual in pdf should be free for download regardless of my intention of buying or not. evaluating new software encompasses the manual - if there is no manual or a badly written manual, i would hasten to buy. and in the end, a searchable pdf manual would speed up the evaluation process a lot. making things complicated by a small player who wants to compete with photoshop (elements), is not a…

i stopped using this app because of this "feature"

sorry for the small company producing this nice piece of software (copypaste is great!), but i just don't feel safe using it because i don't have full control. "activation" makes me feel like being completely dependent on a company that might not have an eternal life (cf. "web-fix": their software is still on sale in gemany and has to be registered online to be fully useable, but all their websites, .de as well as .com…

service is quite good actually...

every e-mail i sent was answered by redlex, sometimes within minutes; suggestions i made were taken into account too. concerning the look of mellel: that is a question of taste. i'd also prefer a customizable menu like all the other OSX apps have. at least you can now easily trash the heavy metal look. and in general mellel is extremely reliable (which nisus is not - don't be fooled by nisus' nice optics! i have…

conspiracy-whacky?

considering that the US brought saddam hussein to power, supported the mudjaheddin in afghanistan, installed the infamous shah in iran, backs the most backword muslim country in the world (saudi-arabia) and has always backed terror-regimes in central- and southamerica, i'd NEVER buy any american spyware, be it mac OS, MS windows, or the devil knows. how do i know if or if not the CIA is putting spyware into these products, not that i'm saying…

upgrade too expensive

sure! i believe you! but nevertheless, captain is better value. its a simple price question - your update price plus another 7 USD buys me a brand new version of captain ftp which works internationally (ie. cyrillic encoding). and when you publish version 4.0 in - lets say 2006 - you'll probally try to extort another 20 USD from me (30+18+20 = 68 USD...). take a look at macjournal. the programmer tried to charge 30…

Change the metal look

i support trashing the ugly metal frame! many users complain about the looks of mellel. nisus express looks so much nicer although it is far behind mellel when it comes to stability and features.
