FLAC2Mac 0.2 (Mac OS X)
FLAC can be played native in iTunes
You can play FLAC natively in iTunes with a tiny bit of work. See this article for instructions: <http://tomyeah.com/flac-and-ogg-support-for-itunes-import-and-play/> The only problem with FLAC natively in iTunes is that it doesn't support cover art or lyrics, so I often import FLAC and then use iTunes to convert it to Apple Loseless so that I can add cover art & lyrics. This program FLAC2Mac may be a good "simple" alternative, but it's not too much trouble to drag & drop the FLAC files into "Set OggS" which takes about 2 seconds literally, and then drag & drop them into iTunes directly. HP PSC 1200 7.9 (Mac OS X)
This is really bad bloatware that doesn't have an uninstaller, and loads your System to daemons that eat up resources in background, and extraneous software that's not made for Tiger or Leopard, not to mention Snow Leopard. If you need to print, use the HPIJS drivers available here: <http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs#Usage> I posted instructions for installation in a reply here: <http://www.versiontracker.com/php/feedback/article.php?story=20081109165013205> If you need to scan, you might consider ViewScan (too expensive in my opinion, but works) or perhaps SANE for OS X (free, but I've never used it with this scanner). VLC Media Player 1.0.0rc2 (Mac OS X)
PPC version won't launch in Tiger
1.0.0rc2 PPC won't launch in 10.4.11, but is OK in 10.5.7. The current version is STILL 0.9.9a, available from the VLC website: <http://www.videolan.org/> [alert admin]

Skype 2.8.0.438 (Mac OS X)
It's BETA, use the STANDARD release
This is VersionTracker's fault for posting BETA software as if it's the normal release. Use the standard release, and allow it to automatically update itself and forget about VersionTracker's insistence upon posting every developer BETA as if it were meant to be used by the general public. Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.10 (Mac OS X)
Buggy Beta fails on PPC G5 with 10.5.5
I installed and some flash media fails with the message that I need a flash player greater than version 8? Dah! I couldn't find the uninstaller, but I reinstalled 9.0.124.0 over this version and it seemed to fix the problem. This is still a buggy beta, at least for PPC Macs. [alert admin]

Yep 1.7.6 (Mac OS X)
iTunes handles PDF files, and also supports multiple libraries, so you can have a separate libraries for PDFs and for music. Why buy this when iTunes organizes PDFs for free? [alert admin]

Adobe Flash Player 9.0.60.184 (Mac OS X)
Doesn't allow playback on some sites, reinstall 9.0.4.7 fixed it.
I installed 9.0.6.0.184 and repaired permissions, rebooted and found that even though the Adobe test page said it was installed correctly, streaming flash video from cnn.com wouldn't play at all. I used the uninstaller to remove v. 9.0.6.0 and then reinstalled 9.0.4.7 and playback was fixed on cnn.com. This is on a PPC Mini with 10.4.10. The uninstaller and old version are available here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ [alert admin]

JuhOS 1.9 (Mac OS 9)
I've used this quite a lot since I use older, unsupported Macs with OS X, and in the process of booting OS 9 & X, sometimes OS X symlink folders such as etc, var, dev, or files such as BootX or Mach get made visible somehow? Using JuhOS is a really quick and easy way to repair this, PLUS, it's a great invisibles browser. It's never failed, or crashed, or done anything other than worked perfectly. I believe it works in "Classic" also, but it'd be nice if there were a Carbon or even better, a Cocoa version for using in OS X without having to startup Classic. In OS 9 it's perfect. [alert admin]

BitTorrent 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Version 4.0.1 constantly crashes and panics for me, but version 3.4.2 was very solid. I suggest sticking with 3.4.2 for now until these problems are corrected. [alert admin]

StuffIt Expander 7.0.3 (Mac OS 9)
After upgrading from 5.5 to 7.03 there is no double-click opening. I've messed for hours, read all the FAQs and it's apparent that this is strictly a drag & drop app. that requires a desktop icon. Sucks compared to the total background interface of 5.5. Don't upgrade if yours works. [alert admin]

What you're missing is the fact that most printer companies don't upgrade their software after they stop manufacturing the printer. For example, my relatively new HP PSC-1210 AIO was sold when Panther was the OS. There are no updates after Tiger. This means the printer won't work correctly in Leopard or Snow Leopard with the available HP software. In almost all cases (including for Epson, Canon, etc.), there is alternate printer drivers available that are…

You can print to Time Capsule using the HPIJS drivers available here: <http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs#Usage> You must install all three packages, and there is an order to the installation: 1)Ghostscript 2)Footmatic 3)HPIJS drivers If you do this order, then attach the printer to the Time Capsule and restart the Time Capsule (pull plug with printer powered down), and then replug the Time Capsule and power up the Printer. Now when you go to System Preference>Print & Fax and use the "+" button to…

Strange, it's working fine on my PPC G5 w/10.5.7, BUT, it won't work on my G3 iBook. I think they dropped G3 support (perhaps inadvertently) when they switched compilers recently?

You can find older v.1.2.x .dmg files here: http://ftp.easysw.com/pub/cups/ Since Apple bought CUPS recently they've evidently nixed OS X release versions, and they'll be incorporated into OS X updates from now on (probably months or years later than these used to be available).

It's nice to have a Sourceforge team developing an Open Source driver for the PL-2303, but, Prolific has been very good at supporting the Macintosh platform, with regular updates that include the recent "universal binary" released back around May 1st, (but with wrong 5-28 date). The real Prolific driver seems to work fine for 99% of users, and can be easily modified to work with virtually 100% of users of the PL-2303 chipset devices. The…
