SpyMe 2.3 (Mac OS X)
I just downloaded and installed this for the very first time and was told "Thank you for evaluating SpyMe. Your free trial period of 30 days is over now." As a result I cannot try it to see if it works at all, let alone works well. As such I must give it the lowest rating. If there is any way to get this to run even once I will be glad to add stars. Cyberduck 2.8.1 (Mac OS X)
The app launches but as soon as I try to enter an address to connect to, it goes to SWOD and never returns. 100% repeatable. [alert admin]

iTimer 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
The reviews are right--the interface is obtuse
I didn't believe the reviews and downloaded this. "It can't be that bad" I figured. I was wrong, the reviews are right. The intereface for iTimer is nearly incomprehensible. Let's say I want to create a new timer. Where is the "New" button or menu item? There is none. Show me another Mac application that doesn't have a "New" selection. And the "Stop" pane...why does it even exist? There is no discernable reason why the Stop button is not always visible instead of being hidden in its own pane, all by itself. "Milestone"? What the heck does that mean? Yes, as an English major I know what the word means, but it doesn't seem to fit this context. How about changing that to "Event" or something a bit more clear? Next, consider that, like a book, the first thing a user looks at in any given window is the upper left corner. What's in the upper left of the iTimer window? A couple of lonely colons with nothing to separate. How hard would it be to turn these off unless a timer is actually running? It's the little things that separate a polished app from a kludge. I hope the next revision has these (and other) little things cleaned up. [alert admin]

Noof 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I placed Noof in /Library/Screen Savers, and it showed up in the Screen Saver pref pane. However, within seconds of selecting Noof, the entire System Preferences application quit. This is 100% repeatable, and occurred on a fresh (1-hour old) install of 10.3.9 with all patches. I think some additional testing is needed here from the developer. [alert admin]

Friday Night Poker 1.1.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I assume if the program is quitting on you, you are in MacOS 9. I've tried it in both 9 and X and only 9 had issues. They were quickly solved by allocating more RAM to the software. Double it and you should find it runs just fine. The software works for me. It has minor issues, but overall it works well. It's the only non-commercial Texas Hold'Em that I've found, so right now it's top of the heap. If anyone knows of better, feel free to post the info here. [alert admin]

iPod-Linux Installer 0.3a (Mac OS X)
Playback broken, but much potential ![]()

This will not play any of the MP3s on my iPod. The smaller files (under 4 minutes) will play but too slowly; about 1/2 speed. (Probably because Podzilla thinks the files are mono and is playing the left then the right then the left, etc.) It also will not play longer files at all; ones as short as 16 minutes will not play because apparently Podzilla tries to load the entire track into memory and when it fills up, the user gets a "malloc failed". I really look forward to using Linux on my iPod, but right now it's quite usable yet. Another item for the documentation is that this can only be installed if the user first enables [alert admin]

Fire 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)
Yes, Fire has serious problems with Buddy lists, but there's a way around them. I could not get Remove Buddy to work either, so I used the official AOL IM client to remove the buddies I wanted to. Then when I re-opened Fire, the buddies were back! It turns out that to remove buddies you must exit Fire, use AOL IM to update your Buddy list, then throw away /Library/Application Support/Fire. Now when you relaunch Fire, it won't re-corrupt your Buddy list, though you will have to re-enter all your account information. Having to jump through such hoops is highly annoying, so the developers really should fix this. [alert admin]

BitTorrent 3.4.2 (Mac OS X)
When I tried to create a new torrent file, the software reported "Unexpected error occurred", "Type error: integer required." When I tried to connect to a URL, the software reported "Unexpected error occurred", "Value error: depythonifying 'pointer', got 'int'." I fear this is a sign of fundamentally bad programming; errors like this should have been caught in the first 60 seconds of testing. Are there no usable MacOS bitTorrent clients?!? I tried Tomato Torrent and had similar problems--unable to create a torrent file or connect to a site. Must we turn to Windows just to join the 40 million BitTorrent users? [alert admin]

Tomato Torrent 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Flawed--cannot generate torrent
The "Generate Torrent Files" functionality is completely broken; first it caused an "Unexpectedly quit", then after relaunch I'm able to add files to become torrents but the "Generate torrent" button never ungreys. Without the ability to create .torrent files, this software is unusable because no BitTorrent sites will allow you to connect without sharing at least one file. [alert admin]

MPlayer OS X 2.0b8r2 (Mac OS X)
After I downloaded this (b8) I almost dragged it on top of my Applications folder to replace the older (b7) version I'd been using. Luckily I stopped myself and decided to test the two versions against each other first. b8 plays my .asf files much more choppily than b7 did/does. These are the same .asf files on the same G4 PowerBook only 30 seconds apart. b8 also simply stopped playing one .asf cold while b7 just kept on playing through the same point without any hiccup at all. If you can, go track down a copy of MPlayer b7 and don't bother with this b8 version. [alert admin]

Fire does not handle Lotus Sametime protocol, Adium does. Game over, Fire loses. We use Sametime at work and therefore Adium, as the best Sametime client we've found for MacOS X, is our one and only chat client. If any of you Fire fans want to go add Sametime support (unlikely, as Fire does not seem to have been updated for 1 whole year), be my guest. Until you do, Adium is…
