Make a Delivery 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Does not work

The instructions say "Double click the application...You will be asked to select your files, then you will be asked to name your delivery. " This does not happen. The first time I opened the application, it remounted a new volume of the same name ("Make A Delivery"). Every time since then it appears briefly in the Dock and then closes itself. Note: I also tried to inform the author of this directly instead of posting the problem for all to see, but his website is all snazzy graphics and no functionality--there is no link to e-mail him from it, nor is there an e-mail address in the application's documentation. I recommend anyone who wants to make a .dmg to just go and use Disk Utility included with OS X. It works. -Kurt [alert admin]

Ashalii 1.3 (Mac OS X)

Cheesy backstory, needs refinement

Suggestions for the author: 1. Lose the exceedingly cheesy backstory about there being a trap with ancient keyboard commands to get out. That's just lame. 2. Do something to make the game rely less on sheer luck. Perhaps a preview of the next piece a la Tetris? Or the ability to mirror the piece instead of just rotating it? 3. Why do the pieces all fall down when links are made? Nothing else in the game has gravity, so why is there suddenly gravity at just this one lone time? -Kurt [alert admin]

PodWorks 2.8.4 (Mac OS X)

Not bug free

After copying some mp3's correctly, PodWorks now copies files but with incorrect names. For example, the files will be copied to my Mac with names like "JQJW.mp3" and "BCRD.mp3" instead of their actual titles. So now I have to copy files one by one so that I know which is which when I have to go manaully rename them. Hope this bug can be fixed. [alert admin]

Screen Movie Recorder 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Unhandled Exception Errors

Once you try to record, you just get "Unhandled exception error 0" messages over and over and over until you force quit. Basically, this program doesn't work at all (at least with Panther.) A pity. [alert admin]

Fast DVD Copy 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Compare to cost of replacing DVDs

The whole point of software like this is to backup your DVD collection in case of damage or loss. For the cost of this program, you can lose and replace five DVDs and still come out ahead. Therefore, it's not cost-effective. No matter how well it works, you'll be hard-pressed to get a good ROI (return on investment) with this product. [alert admin]

ReKey 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Built into Panther

Almost identical functionality to ReKey is built into Panther. Look in System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard shortcuts. Just like ReKey, you have to choose to add a shortcut, then manually type in the text of the menu item you want to assign a keyboard shortcut to. It's almost as if Apple copied ReKey's source code, except the interfaces are so rudimentary that you can see how the two came to the same place. In any case, anyone running 10.3.x does not need ReKey. But if you're on an older OS X, ReKey works and is recommended. [alert admin]

ReKey 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Works even with Panther

It's nice to find a 2 year old app that's only 48k yet still does what it says it does. The interface is not straightforward, but it gets the job done. You must retype the menu item you want to reassign a key to--there's no GUI for selecting the menu item. But if you type it right, click "Save", and relaunch the app, there's your new shortcut. The "readme" says to choose "Save" from the File menu even though there is no such menu or menu item, but the Save button in the upper right of ReKey's window works fine once you spot it. All in all, a worthwhile download. [alert admin]

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) 4.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

S-L-O-W, unreliable

I 'upgraded' to v4.6 from v4.1 but regret it quite a bit. First of all, v4.6 takes forever to connect and sign in. Once you establish a chat, you can watch your keystrokes appearing in the window one--by--one. Where are all those CPU cycles going?? And the app has unexpectedly quit on me numerous times just as it has for other reviewers. This is likely linked to the slowness--there seems to be some bad programming going on here. If AOL could clean up their code, this could become a nice application. [alert admin]

DV Backup 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Great Idea, But Incompatible

Like others I think this is a great idea for backup. Many of us own perfectly capable tape backup drives in the form of DV cameras, and might as well use them for something other than home movies and vacation memories. But this software is incompatible with my brand new Canon Optura 20. This isn't a bargain-basement camera; it's Canon's new top of the line MiniDV offering. The "camera test" feature says that both 'Go to index position' and 'eject tape' functions aren't supported on the Optura 20. But this camera does have indexing features, which makes me doubt the results of the test. If you have a newer camera, good luck to you getting this software to work. And I hope the author finds a way to keep his software compatible with the latest offerings by the camera manufacturers. [alert admin]
