jBidWatcher 0.9.9 (Mac OS X)
Stable, correct functionality; like it very much. ![]()

I have been using jBidWatcher for a few months, and I have proof that the sniper works reasonably well. The program keeps good track of your auctions and has some good features. I like it so far and don't see any problems with this update yet. I suppose my biggest complaint would be the UI's appearance. A Mac application is not so just by virtue of its ability to run on the platform. jBidWatcher looks and feels like a Java app, and if you like Java apps, you will have no complaints about this product. Did I mention that it is free, as in beer? For a free product, this thing is fabulous, and I am very thankful to have it. [alert admin]

PCalc 3.0 (Mac OS X)
Requiring the latest system means many will not be able to use it, and I see little reason why the PCalc application should need to. Let 10.3 users use the application and leave the widget for 10.4 users. What is so hard about that? Some of us are stuck in 10.3 for specific reasons. I love PCalc, but I am not going to move my production environment just to use it. [alert admin]

I have used this to author very extensive scripting definitions and have never had a major problem with it. It's fabulous software, and thanks so much for making it free. [alert admin]

Baytex Party! 4.0b2.1 (Mac OS X)
Does not launch in 10.3 - Uses CoreData framework
The release notes above on this page indicate that this version (4.0b2.1) will run in 10.3. Not so, as made evident by this crash report: can't open library: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreData.framework/Versions/A/CoreData CoreData is not part of 10.3, so the author needs to use a different technology if he wants people with 10.3 to use the software. Poker Academy Pro 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Some not getting activation codes, but support is prompt
Some people that bought PA recently were not receiving their activation codes from the ordering system because of some technical problem. I was one of them. Support got back to me very quickly on a Sunday, and I am satisfied with the resolution. It is frustrating to buy software that you cannot use immediately, and they should endeavor to fix that, but at least support is prompt. I will compose my review after I train some AIs to see how good they are. [alert admin]

I tried WMV Studio's Windows Media playing and importing functionality and was very impressed, purchasing it immediately. It takes a lot of "wow" factor to get me to buy $100 software so quickly. A few minutes after buying the thing, I was making DVDs out of WMV files and playing them in QuickTime Player.
The player functionality makes .WMV into a more friendly format, allowing me to actually scrub through movies (what a concept -- are you listening, MicroSoft?) and use all the QuickTime Pro features I expected. There is very noticeable computation when accessing Windows Media as QT media, but it does not seem inordinate. My only complaint is that it seems to break the Windows Media plugin, and embedded .WMV files no longer work in Safari and QuickTime Player is not launched as the Preference Pane would indicate!
The import/export functionality seems to work just as expected. I was making DVDs out of .WMV files I had laying around in minutes. I can write to .WMV without problems. There is some stuttering in authoring apps when working with WM content, but I will cut Flip4Mac a break -- I don't know whether it is their fault or not. Perhaps WM just stinks; MS could not even make a player that scrubs. Regardless of the cause, I am not disappointed.
Lastly, I will say that I am disappointed in the price, but I am not a design professional -- just a hobbyist. If you are a pro and you work with Windows Media, it seems like this is a real winner. [alert admin]

This is some very powerful software just for keeping track of my DVDs. Just what a control freak like me needs! You can control every aspect of the cache's display and export, so it was easy for me to simply use the Media Location field to keep track of where the disc(s) end up in my books of DVD sleeves. I can publish an exported catalog for all machines in my house to share, and all is right with the world. The information this thing harvests from IMDB and Amazon is amazing to behold. Just work on the crashes, refine usability, and you have some model software. Thanks, Chris -- this is best-of-breed. [alert admin]

I have been using Fire all this time mainly because of its support for strong, public key encryption (via its gnupg integration).

I thought it worked great for free as well, but later noticed that it would only give me about half of the content that I requested from it. It took me a while to notice this fact -- I ran and bought it right away, albeit begrudgingly.
