BitTorrent 4.4.1 (Mac OS X)

This app has had its day

After a year or two of using this client, I've discovered that it is just not worth using. It now rarely launches at all for me and I have tested torrents with this and Azureus and have found that with BitTorrent, where I am getting a 16k/sec download speed, with Azureus I am getting 150k/sec +. The limited interface, stability issues, and slow speed force me to give this a very low rating now. [alert admin]

Apple Xcode 1.5 (Mac OS X)

XCode and Retrospect

The moment I installed XCode 1.5 (on my G5 which previously had no developer tools installed), I began experiencing severe hard disk corruption, especially when Retrospect was trying to back me up. Turning off Retrospect stopped most of the trouble, but I am still locking up solidly all of the time. This was the *only* change made to the system during that period. Given Apple's history with the XCode tools, it wouldn't surprise me if my problems were being caused by it. Be careful!!! [alert admin]

Dantz Retrospect client 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Can't even disable

I have tried to save my hard drive from Retrospect's corruption by opening Retrospect Client and turning it off, but I return to my computer later and it is back on. Last night, for example, more data was corrupted because another backup took place. [alert admin]

Dantz Retrospect client 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Terrible Version! Avoid!!!!

Everyone in our office (with one exception) suffered kernel panics when we started using this software... Each one as they were being backed up. Recently, I have spent days trying to figure out why my machine was hanging, apps were crashing, and my hard drive was being corrupted. Today I noticed that all of this negative activity was taking place during my backup. I went to the server and suspended my backup and INSTANTLY my troubles went away. I could type text on my frozen G5, then walk over to the Retrospect server, suspend the backup and the text would suddenly appear on my screen. This is a lousy, buggy, and dangerous version of Retrospect. I have lost data and countless billable hours, costing our company thousands of dollars. [alert admin]

Adobe Photoshop CS 8.0 (Mac OS X)

Unable to Save For Web - Adobe no help

My Photoshop has now lost the ability to Save for Web. The glib message "Could not complete this operation. The file was not found." is all that it has to say. Searches of the Web show that others have this problem and cannot solve it. Adobe's support is 100% useless. Their "Complementary support" requires a credit card. Adobe has lost my respect. Do Something When 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Nice idea, but can we have wildcards?

I was really excited to find this, and I instantly went about writing a script which would copy the mounted volume to a folder. Then I discovered that you can only use Do Something When to activate when a specific volume is mounted, rather than just any volume. It would be GREAT if you could enter a wildcard such as "/Volumes/Archive*" [alert admin]

FaceSpan 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Very Useful

I actually find FaceSpan to be very useful. I jumped into the Beta testing and gave a bunch of reports, suggestions, etc. I ended up doing less testing than I would have liked due to other commitments, but they were very kind to me in return. I use FaceSpan to create any app that I can't find already made. I used it to create an app that communicates with my Web server, Amazon, and my home computer to show my current iTunes song on my website (www.andrewgrantham.com). I highly recommend FaceSpan. PowerRIP 7.12E (Mac OS X)

My Own Opinion of this Product

I have spent my company's hard earned money on this software only to find out that once you actually share the printer, printing from client machines does not work properly from Quark as the fonts do not get sent to the printer. Ted Birmingham was unable to provide me with a solution, as he blames Quark, Quark blames Apple, and all fingers point back to PowerRIP. I'm sure this is a great solution if you don't want to share your printer, but in an office environment it means that you have to create a PS file of every job and drag it to the printer. What a pain! Unfortunately, the PowerRIP support folks were too busy disagreeing with each other to come up with a better solution. [alert admin]

VNCViewer 2.01 (Mac OS X)

Great Program. Needs Two Things.

This is the best to-the-point VNC client I've used. It has one problem (and has for as long as I can remember), though. If you hold down Option and click the desktop to hide the application, it locks the option key down on the server. This is annoying because when you switch back you have to depress the option key and let it up again in order to continue working. It becomes VERY troublesome if the host computer has a password set and goes to the screensaver. You then cannot enter your password properly because it thinks the option key is held down. More than anything, this software needs very basic AppleScript support. If I could use AppleScript to "tell application VNCViewer to open 192.168.1.119:1 with 24bit" I would be a VERY happy man. This would allow you to combine the network mapping capabilities of OmniGraffle with VNC so you could click on a computer and then control it. THAT would be very very nice. [alert admin]

re: SLOW!

Gee, you're complaining about complaining about a free app. If only you had something better to do.
