SOHO Notes 6.5.3 (Mac OS X)

Doesn't work, no support

I used to use this product daily as it is the only note organizing database that lets me right-click in any text field in any application and lets me choose one of my notes to paste. Since the mandatory upgrade for Leopard compatibility (version 5.x refused to even install), the Paste Notes feature simply does not work. All it does is cause the window I'm working in to lose focus. The other feature I relied on is being able to click on their menu extra and search for a note. Now, it doesn't seem to search the titles of the notes very well, nor does it seem to be able to search inside URLs in notes. As a software developer I understand that in the final Leopard version some bugs may be introduced that were not there before so it's quite conceivable they are working on fixing my two major issues. However, they have failed, after an entire week, to respond to my questions at all! This is unacceptable. Even if they said "we're busy, but working on it, we'll let you know in a week", I'd understand. But as it stands right now, they're ignoring me. Email to their customer service address has also gone unanswered. I tried to honestly rate this product. I've given the feature set good, because it does have a good feature set, but I've rated it poor overall, because the features do not work, and they will not tell me why or when I can expect a fix. As it stands right now, they've extorted an upgrade fee out of me, while breaking the two features I relied on most in this product. If someone can point me to another application that has a contextual menu-based paste note feature and a good search menu extra, that'd be great. ChronosNet isn't getting any more of my money. Journler 2.5.3 (Mac OS X)

Getting data out

One thing I've noticed about all of these data organization applications is that they all are great and capturing data and organizing it within the application. One thing they all (except one) are terrible at is getting data out. If I have a catalog of data in an application, I generally want to use it in other applications. Only SOHO Notes let's me assign hot keys and contextual menu items to notes. So when I'm in another application and I want to paste some information from SOHO Notes, I can simply press a hot key or right click and select the note from the menu. SOHO seems to have broken this feature (at least for me) in their Leopard compatible versions, so I went looking around for a competitor. It boggles the mind to think that nobody else has thought of this. I'd be grateful if someone else does, as SOHO's track record with support and bug fixing has been less than stellar. [alert admin]

Hex Fiend 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Simple and perfect.

I was able to launch it, open a file, select some bytes, delete them, and save the file. This seemingly simple task seems to be too much of a challenge for other hex editors I have tried. I don't do a lot of raw file editing, but when I do, I want an app that is simple and gets the job done quickly. Hex Fiend does this. [alert admin]

SOHO Notes 5.7.1 (Mac OS X)

Good update

They finally fixed the "can't empty trash" bug, and crash on the sync processes. Nice job. I was considering other products, but SOHO Notes have the features I need (contextual menus, hotkeys) My only beef is that I wish they wouldn't force the OpenBase install. I already have OpenBase and don't wish to reinstall. [alert admin]

Doesn't work, no support

After posting this, I felt it fair to come back here and post that Chronos replied to my support query. They have reproduced my paste notes problem and will fix it and gave me a work around that I didn't think of (the Services menu). If possible I would rate their support at one start higher now, although I believe they should acknowledge questions sooner than an entire week later, even if they don't have a…

Backup your FMPro 8.5

FileMaker has lots of competition and remains the top selling database. Clearly their actual customers believe the product is worth the price they charge. Regardless, this really has nothing to do with the fact that the person should have backed up his software. And I'll bet if he called back during business hours, he'd get a new download link. I've talked with FileMaker staff before and they've always been helpful.

Spotlight?

Apple's spotlight only works when each piece of data is in a separate file. That's the way it is architected, so it applies to FileMaker or anything else. If Entrourage allows spotlight, then it is because they save a single file for every email message you have. Would you like FileMaker to make a separate file for every row in your database? If so, then spotlight could index FM databases

Still very good...

It took me a while to get used to the new interface, but it did happen. As you add features, the UI needs to be modified - otherwise the original features remain easy, but the new ones do not. I think XTraLean did a good job at balancing complexity of software vs. UI.

Pointless app. Why bother?

Not everyone lives in the USA. SMS on iChat doesn't work everywhere.

Synchronization is difficult

Synchronization is difficult and expensive. The problem is when it is done right, synchronization looks easy, but there is a lot going on under the hood that you do not see. $25 is a perfectly reasonable price for the value it provides.

Random Play

iTunes always had "true random". What you want is "even distribution" which is the complete opposite of random. Random doesn't mean "all my music with no same artist back to back, and no repeats" - that isn't random at all.
