Adobe GoLive 9.0 (Mac OS X)

Totally New

Well at least it seems like GL9 is a totally new product from the number of negatives I've read and problems I've had. This thing crashes more than a blind drunk driving a Hummer down 5th Avenue during rush hour. What's up with the 'source' view? Are these columns or what? I haven't seen anything as strange as this since that ex-Nazi got elected Pope. I think the "suits" at Adobe are scheming this so people are forced to move to Dreamweaver. Has Adobe become as arrogant as Quark? [alert admin]

Fetch 5.2 (Mac OS X)

ONLY FTP TO UPLOAD 5,000 FILES WITHOUT A HITCH

I've tried 'em all, from the free to fancy and every one but Fetch craps out when trying to upload a large site, say 30 folders with 100 files in each. I run this test about every 6-12 months to see if there is one I like better, and actually works. Although Fetch's interface is not pretty it gets the job done. For simple uploading most FTP clients work fine but for hard work nothing has yet to touch Fetch. Sorry Charlie. [alert admin]

PodTube 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Works.... but

I wanted to get a couple youtube videos after noticing a some were removed (one was a Frank Sinatra doing a Chrylser commerical...) I paid and downloaded it as described on their web site. Launched it and unchecked Add to iTunes since I didn't want to do that at this time. You must use Safari with it which is OK. I went to youtube found a video, and it worked just fine a couple of times. Then it seemed to hang, so I just quit it, deleted any files it downloaded and did it again, and it worked just fine. Except for having to quit it a couple of times 3 out of 14 downloads it works just as described... and it's only $4.95 Another reviewer complained about not being able to try it... which you can't - you gotta buy it... does this mean it's not shareware as its listed? Maybe they could limit the length of video you can download or convert to 20sec. to test it. [alert admin]

xPort 4.3.2 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

WORKS.

What more can I say than it's simple and it works. I tried a couple other shareware programs but settled on this one. It exported at about 5 seconds a song (on my older ThinkPad). Then I just dragged the exported folder to iTunes which took about a minute, then iTunes went and got the album artwork. All set to go. [alert admin]

WhatRoute X 1.8.14 (Mac OS X)

WORKS

Thanks to the developer for making this available. I had also used it on OS 9. It's popular and good enough to be shareware... I've paid for much worse! $10 would be a good shareware price... maybe it would motivate the developer to update it. [alert admin]

Google Sitemap Automator 1.0 (Mac OS X)

UPDATE OF REVIEW

I've tried a few sitemapping programs, free, shareware, commercial. This one is the easiest to use and now that it works, I'm sold on it. I had problems like others did with the v1. I contacted the developer about the problem and he just sent me the URL for the update beta. I deleted all old ragesw google sitemap files and installed the update. Now it works like a champ! I did one of my sites, it handled 6,350 files with 76,480 links without a problem. It just seems a little pricey for a one-trick pony even if it is one of the best tools for the job. [alert admin]

Google Sitemap Automator 1.0 (Mac OS X)

hasn't yet worked for me but will update if it does

There are a number of 3rd party apps for making google site maps, most are for windows http://code.google.com/sm_thirdparty.html Pricing ranges from free, open source, to over $50... I've not gotten this one to work yet, but if I do I will update my review. Tech support replied to problem in a few hours. Overall no star, because it just didn't work. [alert admin]

More Internet 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

WORKS w/10.4.2 HERE

I find it works fine with Tiger 10.4.2 on 5 macs, and on our 10.3 machines. Note: this resolved our problems getting WMV files to play right after updating Safari or Firefox. Just Add wmv as a protocol and find the WMV player. Restart. A great alternative to WMV player is Flip4Mac. [alert admin]

Fetch 5.0.2 (Mac OS X)

WORKS FOR HEAVY USE

I had to do some heavy uploading and decided to experiment with the most popular FTP clients: Transmit, Cyberduck, FTPClient, Anarchy and Fetch. The files were in two groups and went to two different servers. One a Mac server the other a Unix server. Each had 30 folders and a total of 4,600 (html) files. All but Fetch failed to complete the uploads and they had different problems. For light work it seems most of these FTP clients work fine. Then the next day Fetch had problems which I seemed to resolve by trashing the Cache and Preferences, which I had done when having problems with it in OS9. I had used Transmit in OS9 until I discovered it choked on large files which I found when downloading web site log files over 20Mb. I then swiched to Fetch. Transmit acknowledged this and said that wouldn't be a problem in the OS X version but I'd have to buy the new version, which I thought was cheesy since the OS 9 didn't really work. Vicomsoft's FTPClient is interesting, it launches very quickly but I couldn't say it uploaded any faster than Fetch, but it failed to upload all the folders/files successfully. By the way the Unix uploads with Fetch 4,600 html files took 45 minutes. I only tried this experiment once, since it did take some time. The programs might work better for different users. This is just my one-time experience. [alert admin]

9 ok X no

I can't speak highly enough of my experience with Speed Download on OS 9 (up to v1.9.9) -- with it I can download a 700Mb file pretty quickly with my DSL line. But trying the v2.1.2 with OS X 10.2.8 for a couple of downloads 100-500Mb and it just dogs. I had to force quit it since it just sat there after stopping/canceling a download. It also seems that the developer and supporters of this program can't take criticism... they're probably wet behind the ears! [alert admin]

Spin Doctor "upgrade"

ROXIO IS THE 'SPIN DOCTOR' --- spinning the truth about the quality of this program... ever since Roxio bought this it's been crash city, probably OK since Roxio is mostly Windows software... the original toast was great, too bad they sold it to Roxio. All the upgrade crap, you'd think that buying Toast for $$$ would enable you at least a couple of SD upgrades... cheapos... now I look for opens source solutions... (vis-a-vis handbrake)... Roxio…

Sorry guys

Sometimes I have to upload 100Mb-300Mb multimedia files. Other times I have to upload entire sites after major editing, some have 3,000-6,000 files. I've been doing this for 5 years with Fetch. I can drag and drop 35 folders with 145 files each and go do something else knowing Fetch will do the job. I've tried others and most are useless for heavy work like this, crashing, locking up, etc. Fetch has never had a problem, not…

Text problems

The keyboard doesn't work right, neither does the tab. Sometimes cannot select the field to type into??? I tried with the same extensions as 1.5.0.1 and with no extensions. I prefer to use TMN, Tor, FoxyProxy but not sure if they're compatible with FF v2.

Program made me.... wait a minute

Are your wmv icons now quicktime icons? If so then do a Get Info on one of the wmv files with the quicktime icon. Under Open with: select Windows Media Player then click Change All Your wmv files show the Windows Media Player icon and will launch Windows Media Player if double clicked. Flip4Mac worked fine in demo mode (only shows half the video) for most files but I got an error opening a 9Mb wmv file made by my…

WORKS FOR HEAVY USE

I just tested Yummy and retested Fetch. Both worked flawlessly uploading multiple folders and thousands of files. Still had problem when retested Transmit, it seemed like it was uploading all the files, in this case 23 folders with 85 files each but after about 10 minutes I got an error and it turned out none had been uploaded. There may be a preferences setting in Transmit that would resolve this I don't know. All are…
