CopyWrite 2.296 (Mac OS X)

It's Alive

I used CopyWrite for a long time. It's great for keeping projects together and still has a fabulous full screen editing scheme. I'm glad to see that it was updated for 10.6, but issues with the interface remain. I would love to see it updated fully for 10.6 and the ways we use Macs now. While it is still a top app some of its quirks are a pain. I'm not a fiction writer and that seems to be the mission of CW. I wish they would make the categories a system wide setting instead of a project. Most of my concerns a very small and don't relate to the over all operation. I really like this app, but don't use it as much as I did. I hope this is sign and that 3.x will soon be out with some work flow fixes. [alert admin]

Paperless 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Great Start

I use this app for monitoring my spending and making sure that I know where business receipts are. It has done an admirable job for being version 1.0. I'm much better organized. I utilize this app with my ScanSnap scanners. They pair together nicely. Overall I'm extremely pleased with Papers. While this is a very strong app, it's not perfect. There are some issues such as you need to make sure the app and right library are open before scanning. The OCR is acceptable, but needs much improvement to become bullet proof. The app only seems to look for certain details and doesn't always get them correct. I have yet to have it scan taxable items correctly. It is good about getting totals, but not subtotals and tax. The report window doesn't open in the correct size so it appears that information is missing. Resizing the window resolves the problem. My one complaint is that this is a receipt management package and nothing else. Mariner does allude to being able to manage documents, but that feature is more of an afterthought. I was hoping to use this app to replace Yep, but that's not in the cards currently. I would like to see this side developed much better. This app holds a ton of promise and being from Mariner gives me hope that this will happen. Being a MacJournal user, I appreciate the quality apps that do leave their doors. This app needs some love, but should mature nicely. [alert admin]

Snapz Pro X 2.1.5 (Mac OS X)

Venerable Tool

Snapz has served me well over the years. I agree that it's getting long in the tooth especially since it does much of what Grab (which comes free with OS X) does, but has a better interface. I use it primarily grabbing movies. I primarily use Little Snaps or Voila for screen grabs since they have built in edit tools. My biggest complaint is the inability to use newer apps to open the screen grabs in. It still offers Appleworks. It should allow me to use an app of my choice not theirs. I have started using Acorn for light work, other times I use Graphic Converter which the only other choice other than Preview that they offer that I have. It needs an overhaul and feature targeted feature enhancements. One thing I would like to see is a menu bar icon to interact with the app. It is difficult to quit unless you have your secret decoder ring properly set. [alert admin]

Voila 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Great App!

I've used either the screen capture tools with Mac OS X or Snapz for years. In one fell swoop Voila replaced those. I like the interface and tools. It also give me a menu bar icon that greatly assists with using the app. It is the best of the best to me. The only down side is that it currently doesn't do movie captures. If I want to make a screen cast, I still need to use Snapz. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.9.1 (Mac OS X)

Disappointed In OmniGroup

I bought this browser when it was the only one that worked correctly for an important website I needed to use. I've kept up with the updates and then as of the last update, noticed it was now free. If they were going to go free, they should have upped the version to six or something. Why should the version we paid for now be free? You may think I'm splitting hairs, but we paid for version 5.x and now everyone gets what we PAID for, FREE. By upping the version to six, they would have least honored those who supported the product with money and created a clean break for their new free product. I've given them a lot of money over the years for products, I own most of the pro versions of their apps and I am disappointed they couldn't handle a transition like this a little better. You have to wonder if they just take the money we have paid for product and updates for granted. Maybe they should choose another role model other than Redmond. [alert admin]

pzizz 2.7 (Mac OS X)

This really works!

I started using this application with version 1.0. Over the years; it has gotten better and better. The basic premise is that you listen to the speaker, and he helps you relax so that you can get effective sleep. You can create your own sleep or nap programs. Customization is easy, decide whether you want a nap or to sleep through the night, and choose the volume, and balance the speaking and the audio. I create my naps for between 20-30 minutes which is great for me. When I use it, I'm able to relax for fully. I'm able to put the events of life out of my mind and just relax. When I'm traveling I use the sleep module to relax and get good rest in a strange bed. I'm extremely pleased with this app and highly recommend it. I'm not associated with the company in any way. OpenOffice.org 3.0rc3 (Mac OS X)

It's not NeoOffice

I tried to use the app and it wouldn't open a file of mine as well as NeoOffice. NeoOffice presented the file correctly and this one formatted it wrong. This app still has a ways to go to catch up. I'm not going to try it again until 3.1 [alert admin]

SOHO Notes 7.0 (Mac OS X)

Better

I've used this product since the days of Sticky Brain 2.x. I had a horrible experience with 6.X. Their customer service wasn't the best. I also feel that their upgrade fee is outrageous. That said, I popped for it again and feel that Seven is much better than Six. I actually feel that I have as good of stability as I did with the last of the Sticky Brains. I still feel that $25 is outrageous, but at least the product is much better. I recommend it reluctantly, maybe they are back on track and the product will continue to improve. [alert admin]

Yep 1.7.5 (Mac OS X)

Got to Have Yep

I started using Yep and really didn't like it. I changed my mind when I started using it with my ScanSnap scanner. The ScanSnap is the best scanner for archiving documents and as good as it is it's not the full meal deal without Yep. The combination of the two gives me all the content management tools I need. I would be lost without it. [alert admin]

XMIND 2008 2.1.0 (Mac OS X)

Works Well

I started using this app about a week ago and find it to be the best brainstorming app I've used. It is pricey, but it does work well. I used another app for numerous years and find XMind to be easier to use. It is quick and easy to brainstorm and it creates nice looking mind maps. The one drawback is that the version of RTF that this app exports to is not compatible with iWork 08. It can be opened by NeoOffice though. This needs to be a priority for resolution, especially for the regular price. The developer is quick to respond and seems to really want to make this the best brainstorming/mind mapping app for the Mac. [alert admin]

Aqua Done Right

I disagree, it uses Leopards spell/grammar check and has better access to media. I think OO still has a way to go to catch up.

Don't Walk, Run Away From This App

I purchased this app as part of MacZot's April 13 bundle. The authors updated to 3.6 less then a month later. They posted that anyone purchasing the app after April 1 would receive a free upgrade. I asked about it and since I got a discount I didn't get the free upgrade. They took my money knowing that I would be forced to pay an upgrade fee within a month of…
