GL Golf 1.91 (Mac OS X)
Great game, well worth the money ![]()

GL Golf is just a lot of fun to play. Jake has put in a lot of work into this game since I bought it. He's made it more configurable and refined while shaking out some fairly large visual bugs. These days GL Golf plays smoothly and presents new challenges even to seasoned players. From all I've read and heard, this blows the doors off of major golf titles like Tiger Woods. Sure GL Golf is simpler, but at least it works! [alert admin]

MacBornes 1.0b9 (Mac OS X)
Just tried MacBornes for about 45 minutes and I'm really impressed. I didn't try the difficult computer setting or play over the Web, but games I played were fun and addictive. Two suggestions: I'd change the design of the safety cards for the puncture-proof tire, mechanic, and endless tank. It's hard to tell if you've drawn a safety of these three types or just a normal repair card. I'd also punch up the sounds or make the volume adjustable. Is there anyway the developer could add some of his/her own twists to the game--say, adding a betting cube or adding another hazard? Also, could you add one more repair card for each hazard? A lot of times play grinds to a halt because neither side has the right repair card to fix a hazard. Anyway, a big THANK YOU to the developer. One of my gripes with OS X was that the version of Milles Bornes I had been playing isn't compatible with the Classic layer or OS X. Now, we're back in business! [alert admin]

Jack of All Widgets 2.1 (Mac OS X)
What doesn't this Widget search?!?! Spare but elegant interface, accurate results. There's even a link for an extensive inline help page on the back. And it's free. What's not to like? It might be cool to have a means of refining search results--say, by having the widget load results and then offer another search parameter. That would likely mean a lot more work, though, since the developer would have to customize the refinable search process for each site. And there are lot of sites accessed by this widget, folks. BeerMeister X 3.0 (Mac OS X)
I've tried downloading version 3.0 several times, but I keep getting directed to a Web page with several lines of gibberish. And yes, I've tried the developer's suggestion of control-clicking and saving the linked file. Would love to try this app--the screenshots are quite enticing. [alert admin]

Mail EnScrypt 1.3 (Mac OS X)
This utility has come a long way in a relatively short time! I just tested EnScrypt with 4kb, 15kb and 64kb text-only emails. Encryption and decryption were speedy and trouble-free. You now have the option of saving a copy of the encrypted email before sending. One suggestion I have for this utility--well really, it's an application now and a module in it can encrypt and decrypt text in other applications now. Will it be possible to take a decrypted email that I've received and have it show up in the Mail.app inbox like just a normal email? As things stand now, Enscrypt takes the decrypted text and displays in TextEdit. Enscrypt jumps two stars up from my previous review. [alert admin]

Mail EnScrypt 1.05 (Mac OS X)
Seems to choke on relatively short emails ![]()

I tested EnScrypt 1.05 on a few emails. The first was a very short email (the body was "test: I hope this works). The app encrypted and decrypted this email pretty readily. I then encrypted a 32 Kb email--a summary of headlines from the New York Times. It took a longish time to encrypt--2-3 minutes--but the app got there in the end. I forwarded the encrypted email to myself, noting that it was now about 62 Kb in size. When I tried to decrypt the email...well Enscrypt never finished the job, even after 10 minutes. I encrypted the email three times and tried to decrypt three times. On each occasion, EnScrypt seemed to bog down. I had to force quit Mail each time because I'd lost control of Mail's GUI. Arggh. I'm using a 933 Mhz G4 Quicksilver with 768 MB RAM and 10.3.8. I can't imagine that decrypting a 62 Kb email with fairly simple plain text formatting and no HTML really requires all of my machine's resources for 10 minutes or so. Maybe something was wrong with the unencrypted email to begin with...but I don't think so. On the plus side, EnScrypt is a good way to go if you don't want to obtain a certificate from Thawte or others. Just keep your emails short when using EnScrypt. [alert admin]

Synergy Advance 0.1 (Mac OS X)
Wincent, it's time to spill the beans
I've used Synergy for quite some time, and consider it well worth the registration fee. The only feature I'd *really* like to see is the ability to see which song is next on the playlist. Overall, though, I think it's the best menubar controller for iTunes. That said, I have NO idea what Synergy Advance is supposed to do. Wincent's page for it has a lot of grand promises, but no detail. When you jump to his roadmap page for this app, the gist of of the page is "description forthcoming." Wincent, I really don't think you're going to have a lot of people downloading, let alone paying for, a product that has no clear description or stated purpose. Please consider also that you're effectively asking your customers to install this mysterious app on top of a brand-new version of OS X. That's a serious disincentive. Please fill in the details. What will Synergy Advance do above and beyond Synergy? Can we pay for the promised modules a la carte, or do have to pay one flat price? What sort of upgrade price can registered users expect? Hoping to see the light soon... [alert admin]

FruitMenu 3.3 (Mac OS X)
Support at Unsanity seems to have disappeared
I've had the same trouble with Unsanity's sale/support as mgwhiz. I paid for and registered FruitMenu back in 2003, but encountered a glitch when upgrading to 3.3.0. I contacted Unsanity with my name, password and registration code and asked them to help me out. The company responded by stating that they had NO record of my paying or registering. I sent them an email that Unsanity had sent ME in 2003 when I'd an earlier upgrading glitch. Unsanity's 2003 email showed that they had my name, password and registration code in their database. Did I get a response from Unsanity? Nooo. I've bought other Unsanity products and they're great, but lately their support response has been crappy. [alert admin]

iSeek 104.2 (Mac OS X)
iSeek is good...but AcidSearch is great
I've used iSeek, and I liked it quite a bit when it first came out. It takes up a fair amount of precious menubar real estate, though, and it ain't free. AcidSearch is a better solution, I think. It's free, it resides in the Google search box of Safari, has quite a few preset options to search sites (eg, Amazon, Versiontracker) and use various search engines. The blurb about it on Versiontracker at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24092 claims you can search via multiple search engines simultaneously. You supposedly can also create your own access to search engines not already offered by AcidSearch, although I couldn't get AcidSearch to work with Bookfinder.com and some others. Don't let the low version number fool you. AcidSearch is quite good. I also like Huevos--also free--which resides in your dock. I found it easier to use Huevos to create access to sites not offered (Bookfinder.com) than AcidSearch, but your mileage may vary. [alert admin]

Buddy Retriever 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Buddy fetches, but won't open the paper
I downloaded and enjoyed the older version (O.6.2) of Buddy Retriever, but lost track of it as snazzier apps like Watson and NetNewsWire came along. Still, I was glad to read that Buddy Retriever had been dramatically updated. ...Perhaps a little too dramatically. I can change preferences and observe Buddy fetching all the requested info-but the "open paper" button does nothing. Let go of the paper, Buddy! Bad doggie! My guess is that this is a small bug that the developer can fix quickly. Glad to see an old favorite updated, and I hope to use a fixed version soon. BTW--am using Quicksilver 976 MHz G4, 768 MB SDRAM, OS X 10.3.3, default terminal settings... [alert admin]

Great concept, major screensaver flaw
Excellent warning about the logo in the corner causing burn-in. I found out the hard way. Fortunately, it's time to put this CRT out to pasture.

Is the price right? Only you can decide
That's a really nice speech. But I'm not gonna drop $65 for a feature that should be built into Gmail and/or OS X--especially when you consider Eric Schmidt is on Apple's board. Here's another thought: Plaxo offers syncing for free. It seems to work across different platforms and OS versions. Other developers offer this type of syncing for a lot less money and haven't abandoned their software yet. So let's stop the FUD about how…

Trial period broken, or WAY too short...
I agree, there's something wrong here. I got only ONE minute of demo use and that came after installing the game for the very first time. 15-20 minutes of demo time would be better here. If this game is addictive as the developer claims, people won't tire of Frenzic before the trial period is up.

Why so many updates all the time?
I think you see a lot of notices for *beta* releases. Default Folder really doesn't get updated that frequently, mainly because the x.0 releases are so well debugged. Trust me--this is a great piece of software. A lot of major Mac sites--MacWorld and MacNN among them, IIRC--list Default Folder in their essential software lists. The Finder should have had DF's features built in *long* ago--and no, they're not showing up in Leopard. If you do…

Oh come on! "...little glitches too numerous to list here." Give us, say, the five biggest ones, just so we know what kind of problems you're talking about. I was about to download this behemoth service pack until I saw your warning. Thanks for posting, but I would like to hear more about these bugs...

I completely agree with the above posting. I even emailed Versiontracker (info@versiontracker) about this new design before I stumbled across this feedback forum. (The link to the forum is kinda hard to find, guys...). The use of colors and pulldown menus doesn't bother me as much as the person above, but the separation of product description and feedback onto two separate pages really is a pain. From what I can tell, a lot of…
