Apple iLife 08 (Mac OS X)
I love the update, especially iMovie ![]()

I wrote about the new iMovie extensively on my blog http://www.kbeat.com/Site/Blog/Blog.html and I'll summarize my opinion here. The old iMovie had become far to complex for the iLife package. Unlike iPhoto or iWeb, for example, most new users could not simply jump into iMovie and produce good results. With the new version of iMovie they can. I have no doubt that many of the missing features will be added to this version of iMovie over time, but even as it stands it's a joy to use. iPhoto has been improved nicely as well. The standouts are the new events which make sorting your photos much, much easier and the additional printing options. Another home run for Apple. [alert admin]

Jax 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I downloaded the demo of Jax and gave it a shot on my PowerMac G5. I've got a brand new iTunes library that I've been slowly rebuilding from a huge collection of CDs & Songs (rating each song, getting album artwork etc.) to rectify things I hadn't done over the years from when I first started using iTunes. I mention that only to preface the fact that I have a brand new, uncorrupted iTunes library with around 2,000 songs at the moment. I've been working with and adding to the library everyday for the last month or so without a single problem or crash. So, I install Jax. I really was excited to try some of the features, especially as I was rebuilding my library. The music mapping alone would help me greatly as I categorized my collection. I'll never know however, as I could never go more than a few minutes between unexpected iTunes crashes. After about 10 such crashes, which I attempted to remedy with restarts, cache cleanings, etc., I finally gave up. Jax may be a promising product, but it's not ready for prime time. [alert admin]

Package Tracker 2.1.11 (Mac OS X)
I really want to use this widget, as the interface is very nice, but after months of use I've given up. One component or another is always broken it seems, and they are slow to fix it. It's free, so I can't exactly blame them, but it's just not reliable. I just installed a new package tracking widget called "Package Tracking" which I got through Apple's Widget site. So far, so good. Not nearly as pretty as this one, but it works. You can also check it out yourselves from http://codeadrian.sitesled.com/software/ [alert admin]

Finally we can view photos from both my computer and my wife's on our AppleTV. I never understood the silly limitation, but I'm happy for the update. When I get my iPhone tonight (hopefully), I'll see how the other new features work. Everything else is working fine. I've got a very large library and I had no issues. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.0b (Mac OS X)
Nice, if relatively minor, upgrade ![]()

I've installed the new Safari on a MacBook, MacBook Pro (newest model), and PowerMac G5. It installed and ran without a hitch on all three machines using multiple tabs, flash, quicktime, and other media intensive sites. I really like the new find feature as quite honestly I often had a hard time finding a word I searched for with the old light blue highlight system. Also, the ability to rearrange tabs is a nice feature as is the text box resize. However, as far as I can tell, that's all. Not much for a version jump from 2 to 3. I was really hoping the next version of Safari would bring some true innovation. I guess I'll have to settle for subtle improvements this time around. As for the negative reviews. I've never seen such a bunch of pithy, unhelpful comments on VT before (except for Microsoft products). I myself do not run any Safari third party hacks. If you do, please list them. Also, what computer are you running? Did you try any troubleshooting? Those kinds of comments are a lot more helpful for potential users than "the only thing good about it is the uninstaller." Gamepedia 2.3.0 (Mac OS X)
Unfortunately limited only to Amazon ![]()

I'm a huge fan of this app's older sibling DVDpedia. I can't imagine managing my collection without it. Unfortunately, although very similar in design and function, Gamepedia is much more limited in that it will only check Amazon when you add games, unlike DVDpedia which culls from a variety of sources This makes entering an older collection of games a much more tedious task. With a barcode scanner I was able to enter my entire collection of over 300 DVDs in under an hour. This is impossible with my N64, Dreamcast, SNES, etc. games. They must all be done manually, and you must scan the cover art yourself. [alert admin]

I noticed that the update was supposed to offer improved compatibility for the TV Tracker 2 widget. It's a great widget when it works, but it gets stuck on the loading screen more often than not. This is still the case with 10.4.8. [alert admin]

Intuit Quicken 2007 16.0 (Mac OS X)
This is a good article discussing the latest feature poor Quicken release and the lack of universal binary. http://ungeni.us/section/opinion/quicken_2007_one_hack_of_an_upgrade @GregMeyer: If you don't want to read comments from people who are disappointed with the almost complete lack of new features in 2007, just find a review for 2006, or 2005. The app is virtually unchanged save for a couple of minor additions like a widget or .Mac backup. [alert admin]

Flip4Mac WMV 2.1.0.33 (Mac OS X)
I was excited to see the Intel compatible version released, as I was tired of going into Parallels every time I wanted to watch a WMV file. Flip4Mac has been very serviceable on my Dual 2.5 G5, but I was without it on my MacBook Pro. Having installed the latest version, I can say that it has some performance issues. Attempting to play a 856 x 480 wmv file results in very choppy, almost unwatchable playback. I have a 2.16 duo with 2 GB of RAM, and the file plays perfectly in Parallels. The same file also plays just fine on my G5 using Flip. I notice that it only makes use of one processor, so there seems to be a lot of room to improve performance and optimize the app. Let's hope they do so soon. Disappointed. [alert admin]

This is an update for only some C2D MBP's
That's got to be the difference. Nice catch.

QUESTION: Universal Binary offered - why not use for PPCs?
If you have an Intel and a PPC machine, then it is not necessary to keep both. As the majority of the Mac installed base is still PPC, and as the PPC installer is roughly 1/3 the size of the universal binary installer, I'm sure that's why Adobe gives you the option of downloading either one. To answer your other question, the only version of OS X that runs on Intel Macs is 10.4. There is…

No problems so far, but volume is suddenly louder, etc.
They finally fixed the volume bug on the MacBook Pro. (I'm not sure if other Intel Macs had this issue or not.) Until now, the first four or five bars of the volume were useless, same as mute. Now the full range of volume is restored. A small, but nice fix.

TV Tracker still has problems...
Just wanted to add an update. After initial disappointment with the performance of TV Tracker, I have to say it has indeed improved. The app gets hung on the loading screen with far less frequency than before. It's not a critical app by any means, but I'm glad that this handy little tool is functioning decently at last.

Intuit ... What did you do all year?
I couldn't agree more with everything you've listed. I would also add that in that entire time they didn't make the app universal binary. Quicken is an app designed specifically for consumers. Every one of Apple's consumer Macs ships with an Intel processor, and the new edition of Quicken doesn't support them natively. And I can tell you that performance wise Quicken takes a big hit on my MacBook Pro compared to my desktop G5.

Not worth the money if using Mail.app
If you are satisfied with the junk mail filtering that comes built into the Mail.app, then there is absolutely no need to seek a third party solution, as it will yield you little benefit. If however, like myself, you find that over time Mail's built in junk mail filter is less and less reliable, than you will find no better solution than SpamSieve. In the last 3 months alone, it's filtered 108,000 spam messages for…
