Web iPhoto Access 2.5 (Mac OS X)
WiPHA v2.5 works on Snow Leopard (10.6) ![]()

Installed WiPHA v2.5 works with iPhoto 8.1 (latest update to the iPhoto that comes with iLife '09) and Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). We've tested many different solutions for photo management over the past few years and iPhoto + WiPHA fits our need with the best balance of speed (as fast as you can use iPhoto to edit the collection) and shared access (the searchable web access is great). We added a cron job using Cronnix http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/9478 to push iPhoto updates/changes at a regular interval, rather than waiting for a web visitor to trigger the cached image update in WiPHA. Merci, M. Feblot! Vous rock! [alert admin]

Iridium 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Iridium fits the bill to make Tiger roar with consistency. I've been an occasional ShapeShifter user, but without intending any insult to all the work that the SS community does, I never found a theme that was undistracting and maintained all the subtle, complex and important steps of contrast that Iridium provides. I love your new unified look for the OS. Between Aqua for Carbon and Cocoa, the random brushed metal and the "Pro apps" appearance, Apple can make it hard for new users to find their way around sometimes. ("Why does every Open/Save dialog box look different?") I'm fine the very occasional UI exception, like GarageBand, but in general, there is no need for Apple to be so arbitrary about applying its own themes. It was Apple (well, maybe it was only Bruce Tog? http://www.asktog.com) who wrote the book on consistent UIs and it is sad to see them stray so far from those prefectly reasonable principles of consistent, predicable UI design. Your excellent theme restores my piece of mind so I can stop trying to figure out which app window is peeking around the corner from the background based on it's skin and I find myself just using the dock or the Command-Tab app switcher more often, the way it should be. Install was not a problem. Dropped ShapeShifter along the way. Thanks for that, too. Happy to leave it behind. Iridium 1.4 is perfect 5 across the board. [alert admin]

uControl 1.4.6 (Mac OS X)
Try a hack to change the Enter key at http://www.snark.de/index.cgi/0007. It worked on my Titanium PowerBook G4 after I ran Repair Privileges, but as Shane notes, this tip works for ADB internal keyboard on older PowerBooks, but will probably not work for newer USB-based internal keyboards on PowerBooks and iBooks.
If you follow Heiko's steps at that link, you MAY still need to run Disk Utility and run Repair Privileges to get it to load.
I am Very Happy Now. That was one of the last Tiger-related fixes I've been waiting for to get my machine to feel like home again after the 10.4 upgrade.
MANY MANY MANY thanks to Shane at gnufoo.org for maintaining uControl for several years(?) and to Heiko at snark.de for the handy tip linked above. [alert admin]

USB Overdrive 10.3.8 (Mac OS X)
I've been using USB Overdrive for a few years as the driver for my mice from various makers. This driver provides a consistent "feel" for scrolling and moving, no matter which manufacturer's mouse I'm using. Like Wincent, I recently purchased a Logitech MX1000 mouse, but was sad to discover that the side scrolling wasn't supported in the then current version of USBO. I tried the drivers from Logitech and was very surprised at how completely I've taken USBO's scroll and movement acceleration settings for granted and was very disappointed at the Logitech driver's settings for the same.
Now all the buttons/sidescrolling features of the MX1000 are supported by USBO, I'm so, so happy. Loading USBO 10.3.8 was like coming home after living in someone else's house for a few weeks. The nuance of response curves in the mouse driver has an enormous impact to the overall "feel" of the computer as a whole. Very instructive. Thank you, Alessandro! [alert admin]

BuddyPop 2.1 (Mac OS X)
Version 2.1 fixes all my problems, too, but I don't use Bluetooth, so I can't report any feedback about the Bluetooth bugs that others have seen. Really great tool. [alert admin]

BuddyPop 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)
All entries show as blank. Downgrading to 2.0.2 fixes the problem. I love BuddyPop 2 and use it daily. BP2's expanded feature set is impressive. I'm not crazy about the tight layout of the data right up against the edges of the window, but that is a cosmetic issue, not a functional one. Waiting for 2.0.4. [alert admin]

RealPlayer 10.0b (Mac OS X)
no more Comedy Central Daily Show streams
Sad... now I am trying to revert to v9 so I can watch Daily Show excerpts. Sad. Sad. Sad. I know its a beta, but it makes me sad. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.3.4 (Mac OS X)

Apple Mac OS X 10.3.4 (Mac OS X)
I get a message pane from Software Update that says it can't be installed and to "Make sure you have permission to write to /tmp/501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, then try again." BUT THERE IS NO FILE BY THAT NAME AT THAT PATH. Trying the Combo Update now. Thank you for the link, pauldrummond. [alert admin]

ALAP InBooklet 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

IF you: 1) Use InDesign CS. 2) Make more than one or two booklets of more than a dozen pages. 3) Work at a service bureau or print out your own booklets/short books at Kinkos, then this tool will make your life much easier.
It is sophisticated enough to be useful to high-end users at a service bureau and simple enough to be useful for the home self-publisher of small books and booklets. Version 3.0.1 seems to plug a lot on bugs. Thank you alap for all your fine effort over the years and supporting InDesign CS so quickly. [alert admin]

Apple Lossless in supported in iTunes 4.5+. Proprietary, yes. But it is lossless and gets around 50% compression of the native AIFF files.

Who is Allume anyway, the Greek god of compression? ![]()

the top-level link from the Allume site: "Allume Systems, Inc. (formerly known as Aladdin Systems, Inc.) is not and has never been associated with the separate company known as Aladdin Knowledge Systems." probably says it all. Aladdin was sued over the use of that name, had to change their own name and post a correction on their site to disassociate themselves with the name Aladdin Systems. Just a guess.

iBooks lack a PC Card (PCM-CIA) port. All PowerBook G4s support the Card Bus protocol in their single-height PC Card slot.

That is the behvior of Apple's so-called Stationary files. You can make any file stationary with the Get Info pane. When the file is opened it ALWAYS makes a duplicate file with "copy" appended to the end. I do not use them, ever.

Pasteboard 3.1.2 is very stable and works with ALL of my apps, including all Adobe apps. Very useful, I use it daily.
The most significant aspect is that its usage of copying and pasting many individual elements between two apps is dramatically different. You go to the first app, copy all the separate elements, then switch to the other program, and paste each from Pasteboard into the separate destinations.
