Miss FruitMenu but Liking This ![]()

I'm a FruitMenu user since forever, and Action Menus in the OS9 era before that. I'm just really really used to having a customizable system-wide hierarchical menu in my Apple menu, and none of Apple's spring-y dock gimmicks do it for me. FruitMenu also had a few nice "special" items like "Running Apps" and so forth. That said, the Unsanity folks seem totally asleep at the wheel these days and I have to have some kind of navigator, and so far this seems clean, fast, and trouble-free. The only downside is that I have to go to the Finder to access it, but that's only an F1 away thanks to Spark, which I truly couldn't live without :-) [alert admin]

SuperSync 3.0.4 (Mac OS X)
It throws a java error every time I try to open the preferences, and I need to change the preferences to make its file save directory structure iTunes-compatible (why isn't this the default?!?). So I can't actually try any syncing. There's a lot of information displayed, I suppose necessarily, and it takes a while to get your head around all the colors and symbols and filters. I wish there was a way to "invert" the Artist and Album filtering. I've got several hundred tracks that SS thinks are unsynchronized but in fact it's only because I've updated tags on my main machine, and I don't want those files re-copied from the remote. I'd like to be able to filter -out- an artist or album where I know that's the case, but in SS you can only filter to -show- an artist or album. Even in iTunes at least you can select-all then cmd-click to deselect any you don't want to see. Still, even in its crippled state unable to do auto sync it was handy in showing me what was on the remote that wasn't in the main library, which is what I was after at this particular time. I just went down the list and did Finder copies into iTunes manually... [alert admin]

NCH Tone Generator 2.14 (Mac OS X)
For the same money you can buy SignalSuite from Faberacoustical, which is far, far, more powerful. For much less money (or free) this might be a nice gadget to have. [alert admin]

Album Artwork Assistant 2.3 (Mac OS X)
I love this program, it doesn't try to do too much. I keep it running all the time and when a track comes up without artwork it's right there to search for me. I like the way it overwrites existing artwork, making it easy to correct or update covers. Developer seems quite active in issuing updates. Two things I would like to see: 1) The ability to search tracks that don't have album info. Yes, it's a crapshoot, but sometimes you get lucky or at least get clues as to what album the track came from. You can use the built-in browser to search for whatever you want, but AAA won't load the tracks so there are additional steps that make it easier just to switch to my regular browser. 2) The ability to quicklook/expand/zoom image search results with a mouse action (right click or double-click). It's a nuisance to have to keep hitting the space bar when I'm working primarily with the mouse. I could ask for it to give me a list of tracks with missing artwork but then it'd probably turn into one of those bloated expensive apps that doesn't work well... [alert admin]

CoverScout 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)
It's very pretty, yes. Extremely slow and disk-intensive while cacheing all the artwork as another reviewer mentions, I don't know if it'll get faster once it's done. It doesn't show the size of searched artwork so you have to hit spacebar to preview every one. Most troubling of all is that it indicates missing artwork for many albums that do in fact have artwork in my library. This is a fatal flaw. If I can't trust it and have to go back to iTunes to check each result then it's a waste of time. Very expensive for what it does. I'll stick with Album Artwork Assistant, which is quite good, doesn't use disk space, and is free. It doesn't show which tracks are missing artwork, but I just keep it running all the time and when I see a track missing artwork I use it. [alert admin]

It's a great idea (originally pioneered years ago by the ever-so-ugly "iEatBrainz") which I have a need for, and the program seems to be beautifully, elegantly, professionally, and thoughtfully executed. My music library at the moment has 8,600 songs, about 500-1,000 of which need better tags. My tastes run to the fairly obscure, and I don't expect any program like this to successfully find them all, but after only three test songs, all of which provided wrong and/or redundant info, the demo stopped searching and instead popped up its $29.99 nagware screen each time I tried. I'm sorry, but three tests is just not enough to tell me whether the program will be useful to me or not. If I were flush with cash I'd fork up the money just to find out, but not at the moment. TuneConnect 2 (Mac OS X)
A couple of additional comments
Actually putting radio URLs into playlists in the host is not a great workaround because the remote does not get track information, which is huge to me. When listening to radio I very often want to know what it is I'm hearing. A very useful feature would be the ability to delete tracks remotely from the host. Very frequently a song comes up in shuffle play and I say to myself "This is crap, I need to delete it". Being able to do so from the remote would be great. [alert admin]

TuneConnect 2 (Mac OS X)
I'm reviewing v2.1. Overall this is the nicest network remote for iTunes I've tried. Visually very elegant and similar to iTunes. Installation is painless and it just works. Lack of a Track column is a major issue. If you want to listen to an album in correct track sequence you have to make sure the host library is sorted in track order, which is not usually the case with my library. The program includes a rudimentary search field, but it would be much, much better if it had a "Browser" like iTunes', allowing selection of multiple artists/songs/albums/genres etc. Lack of direct internet radio control is a drawback, but you can put radio stations into playlists and use them that way. The table column for library track index number is useless and I'd like to be able to turn it off. Album artwork is only displayed in "normal" view. It'd be nice (and more like iTunes) if it were also displayed in "music selection" view. The currently-playing song needs to be indicated in the media list (like iTunes' little speaker icon). Folders of playlists are flattened, which is a bit of a nuisance. I suppose it could be due to my old version of iTunes (7) on the host (which is running Tiger in my case). There doesn't seem to be any way to force an update from the server other than turning the server off and then back on again. I create a new playlist on the host but it's doesn't appear on the remote until I restart the server. The server prefpane should display its version number. [alert admin]

iGallery 1.6.3 (Mac OS X)
I've tried a LOT of these web gallery programs and this is my favorite. The interface is simple and intuitive and the generated galleries are clean and elegant-looking. Adequate customization is available without overloading the user with options. It's really nice that you can edit captions and change slide order within the program, these features are not available in many other programs. Suggestions for improvement: 1) Make it possible to enable the auto slideshow without having it go into slideshow mode as soon as you view an image. In other words make the functions separate. As it is you can disable the auto slideshow completely so that you can view individual images, but then there's no auto slideshow feature available. 2) I'd rather have the slideshow options in the main window or a second window rather than in a preferences window that has to be opened and closed each time I want to try a different setting. 3) As another reviewer suggested, more flexible image size controls would be great, so that for example, all images could be the same height. Thank you, Daniele, for offering this outstanding program free of charge. [alert admin]

B*Gallery 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)
From the developer's download page: "In order to deliver the best experience possible, B*Gallery uses Java 6, which was released for Windows and Linux in late 2006. Unfortunately, Apple has only released Java 6 for 64-bit Intel machines running Leopard, therefore we are currently unable to offer B*Gallery packaged for OS X" Very disappointing, as this looks like a great program and exactly what I'm looking for :-( [alert admin]

Auto pop-up is a preference, set in the Folder Glance prefpane. The default is that you have to control-click (right-click) in order to get Folder Glance's menu. If the auto pop-up drives you mad, just turn it off.

Well, no - overwriting a file with another file is not the same as synchronizing two files. Changes made in the file that gets overwritten are lost. Or am I missing something in your suggestion?

A few more things: I really hate that the modification date of a file is changed by merely opening it in this program. Very bad. Application is now hung creating a system profile in the "Help Desk" bug reporting thingie. Developer did respond promptly to my first review, but I haven't had time to respond or help them debug their program.

GOODBYE APPLE!! It's been a fun 15 years...
While I doubt I will ever leave the Mac platform, I do agree that the Mac file search functions are not what they should be. While the concept of Spotlight is great and is occasionally just what the doctor ordered, many times a filename search is all that's wanted or needed. It is absolutely mind-boggling that we do not have it, and with boolean search criteria. Being able to trust search results is really important.…

A bit more thoroughness please
OK, I downloaded 1.3.2 and the "Register" button works, but still says I have a trial version. It tells me to drop my license file into the window to register the program. I went back to my original purchase confirmation email and saw that it included a download link to an installer, which was supposed to give me registered copies of all 1.x.x upgrades. OK, my bad originally for not digging enough. So I click…

No, it's 6 weeks later and I've received no reply to my post here or to the email I sent to the developer's tech support. Too bad, it's a great little utility.
