Griffin Final Vinyl 2.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Some issues. Priced right!

Works well, but some issues: -Experienced several crashes, but it recovers well without losing the captured music. One crash was on launch. One moving the gain slider. -The waveform is often inaccurate, with silent parts showing high volume, and rebuilding didn't help. -It is nearly intuitive to use, but the "connected to turntable" radio button on the EQ > Effects menu is placed at the bottom where it is initially invisible until you scroll or expand the window, so you can easily miss it. It should be at the top next to the other "Typical Connection" button. Go figure. This is the one you'll need if you are importing vinyl (remember the name of the program...), so it's odd that it isn't the default, and that you have to hunt for it. Note that applied effects can't be undone. Overall, a nicely done program that is a welcome addition to Griffin's iMic. [alert admin]

Apple iPhoto 7.1.2 (Mac OS X)

No support for last years RAW file formats

Like an idiot, I entrusted my metadata to iPhoto. It sucked it up into a proprietary file that no other app (except Aperture) can access. I was seduced by iPhoto's vastly improved keywording and search. Don't be. Now it is months after the Nikon D3 and D300 were released, and probably other cameras, and iPhoto still will not read the files. Adobe was ready with support immediately. Entrust your photos to a company that actually has a commitment to making your life easier. Not to one that hoards your data and ignores advances in photography. [alert admin]

Nikon Capture NX 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Works for D300 .NEF files

On relaunching, the 1.3.1 version will open D300 .NEF files, at least under Tiger 10.4.11. (PhotoShop and LightRoom will also open the D300 .NEF files. iPhoto will not, and therefore Aperture shouldn't either. Come on, Apple. Let's get it together.) I haven't tried it under 10.5 as I banished Leoptard until Apple fixes those useless stacks and other creepy behavior... [alert admin]

EyeTV 2.5 (Mac OS X)

keeps getting better

The "Keep Player Windows on Top" option is really nice. As sjk noted, editing is disabled when this is on. Also the ability to capture something from the live buffer is great. When you do this, the buffer is cleared, so you can only do one at a time. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.0b (Mac OS X)

Improved tabs

3.0 no longer allows you to blithely close a page with multiple tabs. Yea. Worth the price of admission. [alert admin]

EyeTV 2.3.3 (Mac OS X)

Significant downgrade

The ability to use a separate account has been removed . Did I miss this in the documentation somewhere? Should you switch accounts, you will find your recording will run until the hard drive is full. "Runaway" recording seems to be a feature now. Furthermore, you will have to force quit the app. Should you wish to uninstall the program ( say to go back to a version that doesn't exhibit this behavior ) you will have to go on a scaavenger hunt to find all the files. Some kernel extensions require root access. Where is the uninstaller? It seems to have been misplaced as well. [alert admin]

Adobe Lightroom beta 4.1 (Mac OS X)

Great app

This is a terrific product. Beta 4.1 seems as stable as 4 for me - which is to say no problems. The tools are really useful and logical. I'm unable to import iPhoto ratings, keywords and comments. Otherwise I'd probably switch over completely - even in this beta version. Anxiously awaiting the final release. [alert admin]

Adobe DNG Converter & Camera Raw 3.6.0b141 (Mac OS X)

Where to put it.

Why it says it works with 7.0.1, when it doesn't, is as big a mystery as why it doesn't tell you wherre to put it. Try the Plug-Ins/File Formats folder in your Photoshop directory. [alert admin]
