MyMenuDate 2.4 (Mac OS X)
...not brilliant. I don't wish to sound like a moaning minnie, but I've been looking for a utility that would just allow a little customisation of the built-in clock. This was close, but no cigar unfortunately. These are my reasons for deciding not to use it: 1. Clicking on the clock to make it drop down is very difficult - it doesn't seem to work as a menubar item should, nor does it highlight properly. If it were somehow integrated with the main OS one, it would have worked better. 2. It's a shame it's an app instead of a prefpane - I think a prefpane would have been more appropriate. 3. Size is not very accurate. I was hoping for something about 1-2 point sizes smaller than the OSX menu clock, but all I can have in that range is Normal (too big) or Tiny (too small). If none of these things concern you, then overall it is a decent solid piece of software with lots of customisation options. [alert admin]

Wide Screen Movie Player 2.2 (Mac OS X)
I don't see what all the fuss is about...
...It's a widescreen Movie Player. I have a laptop, I want to play my widescreen movies in the correct aspect ratio on my widescreen tv. Apple didn't provide me with a 16:9 resolution output for the tv, and so I need a piece of software that can stretch the image so it's correct on the tv. Are you telling me that QuickTime Player and/or VLC do these things? Because as far as I know, they don't. [alert admin]

...master of none. Written by people who have never actually used an original Tracker package in their lives. Go on, try it for yourself! :-) [alert admin]

Plaxo Toolbar 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Plaxo is a great product, but considering I'm paying for the pro features I'm a little disappointed that the Mac version is quite limited. There is no plugin for iCal, and the contacts synchronisation seems to have some strange issues; most of the numbers and addresses I have on Plaxo itself have disappeared from my Apple Address Book. It's a good job I keep them backed up. Let's hope Plaxo pull their thumbs out and sort out these problems soon. [alert admin]

Not real shareware... Be warned. ![]()

It annoys me when people create commercial software, then upload it to the World as Shareware, allowing non-paying people such limited access that it is rendered useless.
The Shareware concept originally meant that you could feely use the software, and if you liked it you paid the author. That was it. I can understand some shareware developers adding cool extra features and support should you decide to pay, but limiting users to practically nothing is not shareware. This software is a DEMO only.
Three lousy minutes of recording time. I pay for shareware that is useful. Since the author has given me nothing to try out for free I have been put off at the first hurdle, as will a lot of other people.
I will be removing this from my machine, finding something better and will pay for that instead.

iTunesCool 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)
Quite nicely implemented... Sometimes picks a slightly wrong image but I guess you can search a different site and get a correct hit. Quicker than doing it yourself that's for sure! Would be nice if you could make it automatically search for ones you don't have too. The two goes per launch of iTunes is rather stingey though! [alert admin]

You miss an important point. What if you have a TV output to a 16:9 television? Since Apple don't supply a 16:9 resolution for composite output, this is the next best thing. It makes perfect sense. Otherwise I'd be watching 16:9 movies on a 16:9 television squished with black bars.

That's no bloody good - "if this doesn't work then install iTunes again"... iTunes WON'T reinstall. It thinks it is already installed. Now I have no copy of iTunes. Thanks!

Hi Bob, If you look on the date of this comment it says 2002... I believe that the comment is so old it is referring to the original preview release versions, before Xplay's official release. I believe the comments are in reverse chronological order, so when you get to the comments at the bottom, they're probably rather out of date. :-Joe

again, I resent to people being able to use the term "shareware" when it is a blatantly commercial software demo. I will be taking my shareware fee and giving it to a software developer who allows me to actually try the software properly before buying it.
