IMAP Mail - A Day Down the Drain ![]()

No difficulties loading MS Office; however Entourage is not yet ready to handle IMAP mail. Entourage downloaded my IMAP mac.com messages to the Trash Bin, not the InBox. Sorting out Real Trash from Real Messages was a real joy. Additionally, after I imported my IMAP mail into Entourage, my Mac.com IMAP Saved Mail folder was emptied into hyperspace. If you want the experience of seeing your life vanish right before your very eyes, seeing a few hundred Saved Messages suddenly being replaced by a screen refresh with a mailbox that reads "Zero messages" is just about as close to a near death experience as I need on a Monday afternoon. Thanks to the gang at Cupertino for Time Machine; at least I could go back a few hours and recover my Saved mail to my Mac, although I'm not going to be able to restore it to my IMAP folder without losing the date/time stamps. All in all, I had looked forward with great anticipation to being able to do what I used to do in Entourage in the past: receive emails, link them to tasks and projects, etc., etc. Instead I just killed about 10 hours trying to recover my Mail.app to what it was before the Great Entourage Disaster. Perhaps Entourage works just swell with POP accounts, but I leave that to someone else to write about. [alert admin]

SOHO Notes 6.5.2 (Mac OS X)
Export by Dragging to Documents Folder
Although the Export menu command apparently is not working, I've found that I can still export all my Soho Notes (whether an entire folder or an individual document) simply by dragging either the folder or document to my documents folder in my home folder (or wherever else you may want to copy them to.) At the same time, web archives and docs also stay in their original format. I've been using Soho Notes since it's Sticky Brain version. The Soho Notes iteration added more features and more bugs, but the bugs are slowly being eradicated. Customer support via the Chronos' "Ask a Question" web page generally generates a response in one or two days (at the most). [alert admin]

Exces 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)
Corrupted Vaults on Memory Sticks & External Drives
I recommend using this with great caution and only on data you don't mind losing. I encrypted a number of files into an Exces vault on a memory stick . After opening these vaults successfully a number of times, they failed to open. The response I received from SeoSoft was as follows: "We have noticed vaults getting corrupted on rare occasions when used from a memory stick. We are working on the problem. Please try the following procedure to check if somehow the vault got corrupted: [they then list the procedure using Terminal.app] If this procedure does not work, then your vault is corrupted, and the data is unrecoverable. We're very sorry about this problem and trying to do our best to fix it." Sure enough, Terminal.app noted that the vault was corrupted. The data was unrecoverable. I tried encrypting other files to an external hard drive. After opening a few times successfully, the vault failed to open. Terminal.app reported that the data was corrupted. Although SeoSoft responded very rapidly, their solution only revealed that there are major problems with this software. I've returned to using Cypher 1.0.3. Although Cypher is a Power PC application that hasn't been updated since 2002, and although it isn't half as elegant as Exces, it has yet to chew up my data. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 3.0b (Mac OS X)
Apple states that "Safari loads pages more quickly than any other Mac Web browser." I compared Safari and Camino on the news links at MyWay.com, which (on links to AP news sites) shows exactly how long pages take to load. Camino loaded pages consistently faster, with pages loading in the 0.65 seconds to 0.85 seconds range vs. 2.50 - 2.80 seconds for Safari. [alert admin]

Unobstrusive temp readout in the menu; weather alerts performed excellently. Reads the data in a weather station a mile away at the local Middle School in Anacortes, a nice feature for those of us living on the NW edge of the continental US. Contrasted to the rumored spyware/adware allegations made against the PC version of Weatherbug, the Mac version places no ads on my desktop. (Of course, as noted by the 11/2/05 version of the IT Central Services at the Univ of Mich, "there are no known adware or spyware programs that affect Macintosh computers.") There has been some concern noted on the Apple Discussion Board about a conflict betwen Weatherbug and iTunes, but I've seen no problem with my G4 Powerbook, System 10.4.3 and iTunes 6.0. Howdy, MacRNF: I would discount the off-handed comment by gitan.leger. Firefox 3 does crash (for me, anyway) on a number of banking sites, and navigating through certain portions of the Starbucks card site gives me an instantaneous crash every time. Seems to be stable on other sites.

Not wanting to give up so easily on Entourage, I believe I have found a workaround for the non-functioning IMAP mail import from Apple Mail. Here's what I did, and everything seems to work OK after 3 days: 1. I certainly caution against importing accounts from Mac Mail; instead I set up an account from scratch in Entourage for each of my IMAP accounts (.mac, gmail and aol). 2. My attempt to import the…

As a follow-on; I repaired the corrupted vault on my external hard drive using Disk Utility/Repair Disk. I then was able to reopen the files in the formerly corrupted vault. I have the highest hopes that this took care of the problem...on the external hard drive, at least.

I've opened the sites you mentioned using OmniWeb 5.5.4, and, some months ago, when I saw your previous complaint about OmniWeb's inability to open the same sites, I was able to open them with the previous version of OmniWeb. Apparently, the problem is with your machine, not with OmniWeb. Have you contacted OmniWeb about your difficulty? Their support has been excellent.

I really appreciate the usefulness of DoBeDo, but I almost tossed it out 'cause I didn't read the fine print in the Preferences about it closing iCal automatically. You're absolutely correct; this is a irritating default preference.

I used OmniWeb (5.5.1 [v 607.5]) to open both sites you mentioned (sofa sound studio & the mac groove). My site preference in both instances was set to identify my browser as OmniWeb. Both sites displayed the same when I opened them with Safari. I'm not sure what your problem is, but I don't think it's with OmniWeb.
