File Buddy 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Problems under OS 10.5/Leopard

File Buddy 9.0.1 has a number of real bugs when run under OS 10.5/Leopard (see www.macupdate.com's listing for File Buddy). There's no mention on the developer's web site about whether he's planning an OS 10.5-compatible version. [alert admin]

OnyX 1.8.4 (Mac OS X)

1.8.4 Tiger only?

I'm unclear why release version 1.8.4 is Tiger-only, but 1.8.4b is Leopard-compatible. Great utility. I've successfully used some of the same options that some others here are having trouble with, so it's possible that some of the trouble some people are seeing, might be due to other problems, like directory damage, bad blocks, System software damage, etc., and that running the same options in any utility, or from Terminal, may just "manifest" these problems too. It's also possible there are sometimes problems in OnyX, particularly the betas. [alert admin]

iRepair 1.0.5 (Mac OS X)

1.06 coming soon

I emailed the developer about the OS 10.5 problem, and he emailed back to say he'll have an OS 10.5-compatible version in the next few weeks. [alert admin]

iRepair 1.0.5 (Mac OS X)

OS 10.5 vs iRepair 1.0.5?

Sadly, this great utility doesn't appear to work under OS 10.5 yet--it "quits unexpectedly" every time I launch it under 10.5. Anybody else seeing this? [alert admin]

TransparentDock 2.3.9 (Mac OS X)

ClearDock

Since earlier feedback posts have been pushed down off the main feedback page, I'd like to remind people that they can get most of the same options with ClearDock, which doesn't break when Safari Beta 3, Keyboard Update, etc. are installed. It uses a different approach than TransparentDock--if the programmer for TransparentDock keeps using the same approach, it might always break when Apple updates certain things. One thing you don't get in ClearDock, that you get in TransparentDock, is the ability to increase the Dock's font size. [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.1.4 (Mac OS X)

CCC not exactly free

CCC has an asking price of $10, or whatever you feel it's worth to you. This is the true meaning of "shareware". This is different from the author stating their software is free. I've paid Mike Bombich $30 so far, and may pay him if I start using CCC 3. I switched to SuperDuper about a year ago, after I got tired of CCC 2.3 hanging when it encountered bad blocks and/or bad files. SuperDuper is able to deal with these conditions better than CCC 2.3--it stops the copy, allowing you to read the log of the copy pass, to see the name of the file it hung at, allowing you to trash that file and start another copy pass--but maybe CCC 3 is better at dealing with these problems now, and not hang, though it will need to show the name of the files it can't copy. I also much prefer CCC's method of allowing the user to select which files not to copy, instead of the clumsy scripting method that SuperDuper requires, so that's another reason to try CCC 3. But SuperDuper has worked great for me in the approximate year during which I've used it. [alert admin]

LookAtMe! 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Different from pre-X versions--uses camera input

I just noticed, by trying this, that unlike the pre-X "eyes" utilities, it doesn't follow your mouse pointer (guess I should have read what it does above first)--it follows movement in front of a camera (iSight, etc.) attached to your Mac. Still cute. [alert admin]

LookAtMe! 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Cute

It's nice to see an "eyes" utility appear for OS X--there were a couple of these prior to OS X, but I haven't heard of any since then, until now. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.6.7 (Mac OS X)

Correction

Correction to my last comment: turning off "Enable ad blocking for this site" does turn off most ad blocking, but at least the other Rule Editor options prevent the ads from animating, which I find to be the most annoying aspect of web advertising. [alert admin]

Display doesn't stay asleep??

This has been a longstanding bug in OS X. It still occurs in Leopard. Apple has no intention of fixing it. They may have tried, but if so, they've given up.

Battery Backup Issue . . .

Interesting indeed. I have a Mirrored Drive Doors dual 1.25 GHz, connected to an APC UPS (Back UPS XS 1000), including the USB cable connection (plugged into a powered USB hub), and I haven't seen this problem when running Applejack under OS 10.4.10 and 10.4.11. My Mac is seeing the UPS though the USB cable, according to the Energy Saver prefpane. I may try the experiment of plugging the UPS's USB cable…

10.4.11 breaks Onyx's Double Arrows in Scrollbar at Both Ends parameter

This has to be specific to some problem with your Mac--it's not a bug in OnyX or OS 10.4.11, since I've used OnyX many times with OS 10.4.11, on both PPC and Intel Macs, and I haven't seen this.

In the Caribbean?

I can't find where on the developer's web site that he says he's in the Caribbean. I checked Nov 14, so maybe he's back?

This great piece software has sorted me out

It's not every day you see the term "arborescence" used in a VersionTracker entry, or much of anywhere else. Thanks for introducing me to a word that's new to me. I found the definition via Google.
