Stox 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Hypothetically this supports Excel imports, but I was unable to edit the file to the point where Stox could import the number of shares. It was equally hard to enter transactions. Under 10.5.5, it kept trying to update the records without ever doing anything - perhaps some problem with the update. [alert admin]

SplashID 3.32 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
Doesn't work for me on Leopard
SplashID now crashes on launch for me on both on G5 and Intel Mini on 10.5.0. It may be related to the recent QuickTime update, since I believe it worked before that. In any case, the version 4 update to the Mac version is somewhat overdue. [alert admin]

Missing Sync for Palm OS 6.0 (Mac OS X)
The interface is a bit prettier. If you haven't a Treo, there's little reason to upgrade to version 6. As with others, I've had considerable difficulty synchronizing contacts and calendar events with version 6. Changing a contact in Address Book can yield bizarre sync errors when you try to get it to your Palm (TX in my case); the same is true for new events. In contrast, version 5.1.2 worked well for me. Wait for a bit if you need something like this and can't get 5.1.2 anymore. [alert admin]

StuffIt Deluxe 11.0 (Mac OS X)
Archive Assistant never seems to finish
I had used the Archive assistant to back up and compress my most commonly used files, to put on DVD. With Version 11.0, it never seems to finish verifying. I've tried it twice, and it seems to hang forever after getting to the "0 seconds remaining" message. If you wait forever, and then cancel the verify, it deletes the archive. [alert admin]

iBank 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)
This is a work in progress. I like the notion of a Quicken alternative, so I sprung for it. It imported all my Quicken data pretty well. Not so hot at analyzing transactions for repeats, etc, but. This thing is slow; beach-ball for 10-20 seconds slow, with 4 years of Quicken checking data. Quicken and Moneydance are lightning fast by comparison. Adding a new debit may cause a 5-10 second delay (1.8 Ghz PowerMac with 1.5 gigs of Ram). They have an active discussion forum, with real support. They are well aware of this issue, and have work-arounds like displaying only recent data; but I like being able to search all my data all the time. It's not as customizable as I'd like; I don't need to see a graph of my spending patterns all the time. There are some reports of crashing, but I've not seen this. It looks like the product is improving rapidly, but at this point a purchase seems a little premature. [alert admin]

Intego VirusBarrier X4 10.4.3 (Mac OS X)

After the recent worms, I thought it was time to do a commercial anti-virus. The product installs very nicely. But when I tried copying thousands of files to an external USB drive, it kept crashing and restarting every few minutes. It handled a few files well. The PowerMac has also hung twice when trying to sleep since I installed VirusBarrier; unable to reach even via ping or SSH. The Intego support site gives instructions to add a full System Profile report to the bug report, but can't take the full text of the report. The help for that feature seems to refer to an older version of System Profiler. The uninstall leaves the Intego common libraries and update module still active. I wonder if the product needs an update for 10.4.5. The interface is excellent. I will see what support says, but this behaviour is very like the Norton AV of old on the PC. [alert admin]

Yojimbo 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Liked the look of it, told it to import a bunch of files in Documents; crashed importing last year's tax return pdf. Deleted it. Problem with the .Mac sync item is also there. I wanted to like this, and would have registered it at least partly out of gratitude for TextWrangler. Maybe with a little more work, it'll be there. [alert admin]

6.0.1 works fine for me, just like the earlier releases
Version 6.0 corrupted my calendar and contacts (yes, I reported it to MarkSpace tech support, after I recovered from a backup). Version 6.01 b15 worked so long as I did not try to sync contacts / events / calendars. Perhaps 6.01 will actually work.

Misleading tagline, nothing OSX can't already do
I had to rebuild my Raid 1 setup last night; one of the drives got out of sync somehow yesterday. As nearly as I can tell there was no hardware failure at all. There is a use for a better product than Apple RAID, perhaps. How it will work with the Leopard upgrade process will be interesting to see.

Thanks for the note; I also have the $30 mail-in rebate in my inbox, so I'll be patient ordering this. Unless version 8 is required for Leopard, the feature list doesn't inspire me to make an immediate purchase right after Christmas. Maybe the file recovery for damaged disks or the DVD slideshow feature; but for 60 or 70 dollars?

Doesn't hurt performance, except when it crashes
A further note on my comment. Intego support was very prompt, asked for system and crash logs etc. But since there was nothing at all in the system log files to explain the hangs when the system was going to sleep, I don't know how they can debug this. There were no hangs before installing Virus Barrier, and none since I uninstalled it. ClamXav doubtless has many merits (and I contributed to it). It seems…
